Is Beth still going to play Stuttgart? Fed Cup makes that difficult, but it's her favorite event and she's defending the doubles...

Re: The Queen's Palace: Queen Bethanie in 2010

Queen Bethanie will be the star player for the Fed Cup team.... She plays 3/5 matches.

1st Tie: Queen Bethanie vs. Elena Dementieva
2nd Tie: Melanie Oudin vs. Alla Kudryavtseva
3rd Tie: Melanie Oudin vs. Elena Dementieva
4th Tie: Queen Bethanie vs. Alla Kudryavtseva
5th Tie: Queen Bethanie/Liezel Huber vs. Elena Dementieva/Ekaterina Makarova

Get it done QB.

At the Botanical Gardens today, I tried to bring a little spontaneity to our team pictures after the draw ceremony. In one picture we wore our shirts backwards so you could see ‘USA’ and we put some flowers in our hair. It was definitely hot, we were standing up there sweating in our uniforms and as soon as the press conference was over, everyone kind of stripped down and was in a fun mood.

Tomorrow I play Elena Dementieva in the second match. I have not played her in awhile. The last time I played her was last year on clay and I feel the hardcourt suits my game. I am excited for it. It is always fun to play against a top-ranked player to see how you fair against her.

It does not matter to me whether I play the first or second match. I have played both in Fed Cup. I can’t really think of how Mel did in her match before me because the only thing I can control is how I play in my match so you really have to push that thought out of your mind.

I am also scheduled to play doubles with Liezel. In today’s press conference she said I was the most ‘free’ person she had played with and thanked me for a life lesson! But she is more free than she lets on She is definitely spontaneous in her fakes and quirks on the court, which make her a great doubles player. I am a little more structured than she is making it out! But I think with doubles, because you have two people, one at net, there is more room to be creative and just spur of the moment moves. I think that is what makes a good doubles player. For me it is fun to be that way anyway!

In doubles, most of the time, at least the first few shots are planned but outside of that you can’t really control what the other team is going to do. If they come up with a lob, your poach does not really matter because you can’t touch the ball. I think doubles is a lot of spontaneous shots.

On the WTA Tour, I have playing doubles lately with Yan Zi. We won the title in Ponte Vedra Beach and we are going to play in Europe and see how it goes. We have actually only played four tournaments so we have not played that much. I am looking forward to playing the big tournaments together – Rome, Madrid, French Open – and see how we can do against top teams.

I am also debuting a new tattoo on the court tomorrow. It is five days old so it is still a little fresh. A bunch of people will see it on Tennis Channel during the match. It actually though is not even finished. I spent two and a half hours in the chair and I still have another two and a half hours to go on it.

I had a tattoo done last November that are bees flying on my right forearm because my nickname was Killer B when I was younger. The new one is lotus flowers on the inside of my upper right arm. I have a few more hours in the chair to fill in the colors so I will finish it up after Wimbledon in July!

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Melanie Oudin has been the U.S. Fed Cup Team’s top singles player for three straight ties, and when the 2010 semifinal against Russia begins Saturday in Birmingham, Ala., the U.S. will have its No. 1 hitting lead off.

Oudin, ranked a career-high No. 31 in the world, drew the first match of the tie against Russia’s No. 2 player, Alla Kudravtseva, and in the second singles match, Bethanie Mattek-Sands faces Russia’s No. 1 player and world No. 6 Elena Dementieva.

The pairings reverse on Sunday, with the No. 1 players Oudin and Dementieva squaring off first, followed by Mattek-Sands and Kudravtseva in the fourth singles match. In the doubles rubber, world No. 1 doubles player Liezel Huber and Mattek-Sands will face Dementieva and Ekaterina Makarova.

“I think normally you want someone that’s been there before to play that first match,” U.S. Fed Cup Captain Mary Joe Fernandez said. “We’re really fortunate both Melanie and Bethanie have played previously and both have played that first match and know what to expect. Sometimes it’s better to go first because you don’t know any results yet and you go and play your match. (But it) didn’t really matter who played first. We’re excited and ready to go.”

Oudin and Kudravtseva have met once before at the Australian Open earlier this year, which was a three-set win for the Russian. Kudravtseva is now playing in her first career Fed Cup tie, and both players know the circumstances of the team competition are very different.

“I played Alla this year at the Australian Open and lost in a tough three-setter,” Oudin said. “I know both of their (Kudravtseva and Dementieva’s) games. And I am just going to play my game this weekend, and hopefully all goes well.”

“Team competition is very different from individual matches,” added Kudravtseva, ranked No. 78. “I am looking forward to it. I have never played in a Fed Cup tie, so I am really excited. Melanie is a great player. She improves every week, she has a big heart, and I know she will be playing well for her country, so I am looking forward to a challenge.”

Fernandez also added Sloane Stephens, 17, to the team roster. Stephens was traveling and practicing with the team as a Future Fed Cupper and, while not currently in the lineup, could be called upon to play if the team needs her.

Russian Captain Shamil Tarpischev elected to only nominate three players to his team. He only arrived in Birmingham Wednesday after being stranded in Russia due to the halting of flights because of the erupting volcano in Iceland.

Dementieva and Oudin know each other well, having played two tight three-set matches within six months. Oudin came from behind to defeat Dementieva in the second round of the 2009 US Open on her way to the quarterfinals, and then in Paris in February, Dementieva defeated Oudin en route to winning the title.

Mattek-Sands and Dementieva, on the other hand, have met just once since 2006 – a win for Dementieva in Madrid last year. However, Mattek-Sands, ranked No. 129 in singles and No. 14 in doubles, is now recovered from the injuries that plagued her last year, including an injured hip, and feels her game is back on track.

“I think most of us know all the players. I have not played Elena in awhile. I played her last year in Madrid, and I unfortunately lost,” Mattek-Sands said. “I feel like I am healthier and feeling better this year and playing better, as well. She is a tough match. She has been top 10 for a long time, she has been very consistent, so it will be a well-fought match. The other two players I played, as well, in the last two years. I think we both have wins and losses with them. I am excited to play here; everything is different in Fed Cup.”

In what could be four very competitive singles matches, the U.S. would seem to have the edge should the tie go to the doubles rubber. Huber and Mattek-Sands are both outstanding doubles players, and this is the third tie they will be playing together.

They paired together to win the doubles rubber against France in February and came from a set, 5-2 and match-point down against the Czech Republic last year in the semifinals to win in three sets and send the U.S. to its first final since 2003.

“We (Bethanie and Huber) practiced this week, and it’s been kind of like old (times) playing with her,” Huber said. “We gel pretty good. This is definitely the best team, Bethanie and I, to play this doubles match. We go in with confidence. Going in with confidence just means we’re gonna give 100 percent and we believe in ourselves.”

Dementieva does not play doubles, while both Makarova and Kudravtseva play both doubles and singles regularly.

“What was the last time I played doubles? I don't remember,” she said. “Well, I used to play doubles, and I won couple tournaments. I played with lots of different players. I think I’m a very experienced player. If my team will need me to play in the doubles match, I’m sure I will do so… But we realize that Liezel is, you know, No. 1 player in doubles, and it’s gonna be a tough challenge for us.”

And if it comes down to the doubles in the semifinals for the second year in a row for the U.S., Huber and Mattek-Sands are hoping for the same result for the U.S., just without as much of the drama.

“I think it’s an interesting lineup for the doubles. I think Makarova is the strongest doubles player,” Huber said. “I believe Kudryavtseva, she’s a very good doubles player, also. As far as my knowledge is, Dementieva doesn't play doubles. Bottom line is they’re all-around good players. If it comes down to the wire, I’m looking forward to playing the doubles match. It’s great, and we’re happy to be here in the USA.”
