Time for my yearly Sam Smith is ace post.
Just a great commentator. Love when paired with Renae Stubbs too.
I can't believe people think the Apia ad is the worst for the AO coverage.
Have you guys seen the Menopause Australia(?) ad where the lady says "I think I just wet myself" with a waiter nearby
Clearly the worst ad.
I really, really, really despise it!
I'm in Melbourne and I'm absolutely bewildered from what I saw this Australia Day. I would say less than 1% of Melbourne people wore anything green and gold or an Australian flag and when I went up the mall an passed an Aboriginal land rights protest and got told to 'celebrate my racist Australia Day' let alone the fact that my mate is aboriginal and was also wearing green and gold and standing right next to me then there's the Julia security scare and police being unaustralian to Bernard Tomic !!! A mess !!!
Best thing I saw was a young Chinese girl wearing traditional Chinese dress and holding a small Australian flag in her hand twirling it around. Just about the only good thing here regarding Australia Day in Melbourne...
Why can't we just celebrate Australia as the great country we are today? We need to move on from all the hate, it doesn't solve anything. In my humble opinion, we need a day of mourning and rememberance for the crimes against indigenous-australian's and a seperate (australia) day to celebrate our nation. Keep the two things seperate, don't forget what happened all those years ago...just find a step forward into harmony.
Now that it's all nearly over, I've been thinking about Channel Seven's coverage of the Open this year.
I actually think it's been really good. The commentary has been better than it's ever been in my opinion. Sam Smith, Rennae Stubbs, Roger Rasheed, Jim Courier and even Lleyton Hewitt offer knowledgable insights into the game. Bruce McAvaney and other crappy commentators like him didn't seem to be around so much this year.
The coverage was generally tennis-focused and there seemed to be less gimmicks than in previous years. I think they genuinely achieved raising the public's interest in the tennis without stooping to too many lows. I think they've done a great job in cementing tennis as a credible and popular sport in Australia.
This was brought home when I flicked on to the ABC News website and there's a big picture of Vika with the trophy. I don't think a barely-popular winner would have received this coverage a few years back. I think Channel Seven did the sport a good service this year.

I think Sam Smith was really impressive and a great addition to the team. She was a perfect partner for Stubbsy whose knowledge of all the players was very interesting. To actually know them and to share insight was great.Roger Rasheed's honest assessments were appreciated. Lleyton Hewitt spoke very well and he thoughts were perceptive. I am not a great fan of Todd Woodbridge and he annoys me when he does the on court interviews poorly dressed....but that is just me being a fuddy duddy! Jo Griggs is a great anchor woman and I find her very charming and endearing
Overall I agree with Territory. Channel 7 and the team did a great job.....and people like Pat Cash, Tracy Austin and Gary Wilinson were not missed at all!
