Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for December 7 Goes to...

Julia Cohen.

Julia made it the farthest this week than all the other Americans by winning the $10K in Mexico's Xalapa. In the first round, Julia crushed fellow American Alexandra Riley 6-0 6-0. She followed up this easy win with another by beating Leonie Mekel 6-1 6-3. Nika Kukharchuk would be her obstacle in the QFs and she passed the test with flying colors with a 6-1 6-3 win. From this point on it got more difficult for Julia. In the SFs was fellow American Elizabeth Lumpkin and Julia struggled to the win with a 6-4 4-6 6-1 win. In the final, Julia had to take on another fellow American, this time qualifier Gira Schofield. Gira gave it her all after a great week, but it ran short as it was Julia in the end holding up the winner's trophy with a 5-7 6-2 7-5 victory. Julia won just her second ITF, oddly enough both were $10Ks in Mexico.

Honorable Mentions

Gira Schofield for making the Finals of the 10K in Xalapa after coming through qualifying. In qualifying, Gira beat Alina Sullivan 1-0 ret. In the main draw, Gira drew 6th seed, Vivian Segnini. Gira shocked the crowd with a huge upset 6-2 6-3. In the second round, Gira beat Anastasia Kharchenko 6-2 6-3. Gira in the QFs beat fellow American Amanda Fink 6-7 6-2 6-2. Another shocking upset would occur for Gira in the SFs when she took down heavy favorited 8th seed Claire De Gubernatis 6-2 6-3. Her steam would run out in the final though after a valiant effort against top seeded Julia Cohen, losing 5-7 6-2 7-5.

Xalapa's Americans for making the QFs and SF at $10K in Xalapa. Second Honorable mention goes to Elizabeth Lumpkin for making the SFs. In the first round, Elizabeth beat WC Laura-Alicia Aguilar 7-6 6-4. In the second round, another American created a shocking upset when Elizabeth beat 5th seed Paula Zabala 6-2 6-4. Elizabeth crushed 4th seeded Nathalia Rossi 6-0 6-1 to make the SFs. In the Semis, she would lose to the Eventual Champion, Julia Cohen 6-4 4-6 6-1. Elizabeth won the doubles event here in Xalapa with this next girl, Amanda Fink. Amanda Fink made the QFs in Xalapa. She took down fellow American, qualifier Shelby Rogers 3-6 6-4 6-3. Amanda got a bitch fortunate in the next round as she beat 3rd seed Marina Giral-Lores 3-1 ret. She would then lose in the QFs to fellow American Gira Schofield in a tight 3 setter, 6-7 6-2 6-2. Finally, we have Chieh-Yu Hsu who also made the QFs. Chieh-Yu beat Dominika Dieskova 6-3 6-4 in the first round. She would then beat the woman who took down the 2nd seed, Ximena Hormoso, which Chieh-Yu was able to win 6-3 6-3. However, her run would end as Claire De-Gubernatis eat her 6-2 6-4.

Nicole Robinson. For the sake of leaving Mexico and giving some honor to other ITFs, we'd go to Santiago, Chile for their $10K where we'd find Nicole Robinson. In qualifying, Nicole beat Ana-Maria Chavez-Franco 6-1 6-4 and then Valentina Parrilla 6-3 7-6. In the first round, Nicole would beat Valentina Parrilla once again as she got the LL spot, this time with a 6-0 6-3 win. Cecilia Costa-Mielgar would beat Nicole in the second round 6-2 6-2.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for December 14 Goes to...

Chieh-Yu Hsu.

Chieh-Yu takes the honor for this week after winning the $10K in Veracruz, Mexico. Chieh started off the week impressively by beating 2nd seed and fellow American Mashona Washington 6-3 7-5. Chieh-Yu followed up the upset with another win, but much closer as she beat Nazari Urbina 3-6 6-4 6-4. That would be the only set Chieh-Yu would lose the entire week. In the QFs, Chieh-Yu beat Agata Baranska 6-3 6-4. In the SFs, she ended the great run of Shelby Rogers with another 6-3 6-4 win. In the Final, Chieh-Yu beat 5th seed Vivian Segnini 7-5 6-4. This would be Chieh-Yu's first ITF title.

Honorable Mentions

Shelby Rogers for making the Semis of the 10K in Veracruz after coming through qualifying. In qualifying, Gira beat Jill Saunders 6-3 6-1. In the main draw, Shelby drew WC Andrea Renee Villarreal and cruised to a 6-1 6-0 win. Shelby then took out Katerina Kramperova 4-6 6-3 6-1. In the QFs, Shelby was able to continue her run once more as she beat Gally De Wael 6-4 6-3. Shelby would lose in the SFs though to Eventual Champion, Chieh-Yu Hsu, 6-3 6-4.

Nicole Robinson for another couple of wins in this time Quito, Ecuador. This event was held on clay and Nicole slid her way into the second round with a 6-1 6-1 win over Fiorella Jerardino. She then lost to 2nd seed Dalila Jakupovic 6-2 6-4. Nicole is showing that she has got some potential in the future with her past 2 weeks.

Laura has had a fantastic start to the year and it's only taken the no.1 team to beat her in the first two tournaments (a final and a semi ). Best of all, the Granville/Spears team came back. They were usually great when they played a few years ago but had not played on the main tour in a while.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Liezel is probably getting it for Auckland for being first title winner for Americans. Serena may get Sydney, I need to figure it out later

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Liezel for both Auckland and Sydney! She plays amazingly well, she has obviously been working hard on her backhand during the off season, and that shot is far far better.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for January 4 Goes to...

Liezel Huber.

Liezel is the first Player of the Week for Team USA for winning the first title of the season for Americans and for winning her 40th doubles title in Auckland. In the first round, Liezel and her partner Cara Black took on Marina Erakovic and Polona Hercog. The American Zimbabwean duo took the first set 6-3, but struggled in the second narrowly winning it 7-6(6). It was easier for them in the QFs as they beat Monica Niculescu and Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-3 6-2. For them in the SFs, awaited Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone, Franny has had their number prior to this match. This would go the distance as Liezel and Cara cruised to a 6-1 first set. The second set was a tight affair going against the American's favor as they lost 7-5. In the Match Tiebreak, they were able to escape the upset 10-8. In the Final, surprise finalists Natalie Grandin and Laura Granville awaited. The first set was close, but Liezel and Cara proved why they hold 4 slams together and were able to take it 7-6(4). They would ease to a 6-2 second set and claim their first title of the season.

Honorable Mentions

Vania King for being the only American girl to win a Main Draw Singles Match this week when she won her first round in Brisbane. Brisbane had a packed field and Vania was able to find herself into the second round. Vania was able to beat Sybille Bammer in the first round 6-4 6-1 being the First American to win a Singles Main Draw Match this season. In the second round, she looked to continue her form as she took the first set 6-4 from Andrea Petkovic, but Andrea then found her game and crushed Vania there after 6-2 6-1.

Laura Granville for making the Final of the WTA event in Auckland. Laura and partner Natalie Grandin made a shocking run to the final this week. In the first round, they took down Kristina Barrois and Maria Kondratieva 6-3 6-2. They then in the QFs had to take on 2 top 20 players in singles, Dominika Cibulkova and Yanina Wickmayer who upset second seeds, Sania Mirza and Virginia Ruano Pascual. Grandin and Laura showed them whose boss as they cruised past them 6-3 6-1. Uhlirova and Voracova in the SFs would prove to be a tough test for Laura and Natalie. Laura and Natalie took the first set with ease 6-2, but lost their lead when the Czechs stormed back with a 6-3 set win. In the Match Tiebreak, Laura and Natalie held off their opponents with good volleys and won it 10-8. In the final, they took the World #1 team to a tight first set, but lost it 7-4 and there after lost it 6-2.

Riza Zalameda. Riza is known as America's ITF Doubles Specialist, or even American's Doubles Specialist in training for the WTA Tour. Riza teamed up with Elena Vesnina to be a part of the 4th seeds for the Auckland event. They took out the all-American team Jill Craybas and Abigail Spears 7-5 3-6 12-10. They continued on their tight matches ways in the QFs, but this time they were on the losing end of this marathon, losing 7-6(13) 3-6 16-14.
