Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for October 19 Goes to...

Meghann Shaughnessy.

Meghann Shaughnessy gets the honor for that week because she was the only American playing and did well, but mainly for making SFs in Luxembourg Doubles. Meghann in Singles got a bad draw by having to play recent US Open winner Kim Clijsters in the first round. Meg lost 6-2 6-2 in a valiant effort. In doubles, she played with Katarina Srebotnik. They cruised to the SFs with a win over Lefevre and Vedy 6-2 6-1 and then took down 3rd seeds Rosolska and Jans 6-3 6-3. In the SFs, her dreams of a title in her comeback from multiple injuries with her leg, ended with a 3 set loss to Uhlirova and Voracova. They won the first set 6-4, but soon after struggled, but still fought, but lost 4-6 6-4 10-5. Meghann gave both events her best attempt and is this week's POTW.

Honorable Mentions

Alexandra Riley for beating some nobody from Cameroon in $25K Lagos. She lost in the next round.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for October 26 Goes to...

Serena Williams.

Serena Williams showed her dominance during the Sony Ericsson Championships with an impressive 5-0 run to the title and then as an icing on the cake, she was the Year-End #1 for the 2nd time in her career. Serena opened up her run with a win over Kuznetsova. Serena saved 2 set points one with a forehand return winner and then the next with an ace in the First Set Tiebreak down 4-6. Serena would claim the set for her own and then take the match 7-6(6) 7-5. On Match point she hit a backhand winner. Serena would then play an impressive match with Venus going the long distance. Serena would beat Venus 5-7 6-4 7-6(4). Serena saved a match point in the process, and took down sister Venus for the 12th time. In her last match, although certain of qualifying for the SFs and being YE #1, Serena would crush Elena Dementieva 6-2 6-4 with a dominant performance, keeping Venus' SF dreams alive. In the SFs, Serena played Caroline Wozniacki who she had a breaking contest with where Serena's one hold came in handy as she won the first 6-4. Caroline retired after winning the first game of the second. Serena in the final would once again take on Venus. In the first, Serena took advantage of a slow starting Venus, while Serena herself was on point and took the first 6-2. The second set got more competitive, as Venus started holding serve consistently, but Serena's serve was the key as she only lost about 10 points the whole match. Serena would claim her 2nd Tour Championships Title, first in the Round Robin Format.

Honorable Mentions

Liezel Huber claimed the YE #1 in doubles with partner, Cara Black for the 3rd straight year when they beat Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs in the SFs of the YEC. Liezel and Cara lost the first set 6-3 to a determined Aussie team. The #1 team came storming back though getting a quick lead in the second, 5-2. Despite having chances to close it out, 2 set points, it would go to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, Bluber once again took it easily 7-3. In the STB, Bluber came out strong with a 8-3 lead. Sam and Rennae fought back hard to 8-7, but then found themselves down double MP. They saved 1, but lost the next. Huber and Black wouldn't be able to make it a hatrick for the YEC title as they lost a title encounter to the Spaniards, Llagostera Vives and Martinez Sanchez, who before this match they led 6-0 in H2H. They lost 7-6(0) 5-7 10-7.

Venus Williams for making the finals of the Tour Championships in Doha. Venus found herself down 0-2 after the second day of play, but with a bit of lucky was able to find herself playing on the final day in the Singles Final. Venus would blow leads to both Elena Dementieva and Serena Williams, losing both matches. Lost to Elena 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2. Lost to Serena 5-7 6-4 7-6(4) after holding a MP. Venus kept her hopes alive of making the SFs with a win over Sveta 6-2 6-7(3) 6-4. Venus came out playing well in the first, but aided with some sloppy play from Sveta to win it 6-2. It got a hell of a lot closer in the second and third though as Sveta's form picked up and her confidence started to build. Sveta was able to win the tiebreak. After a tight affair in the third, Venus was able to close out a sloppy last game, on match point as Sveta sent a backhand wide. In the SFs, Venus took down Jelena Jankovic. Jelena took the first 7-5 after trailing Venus 5-4. In the second set, Venus steadied a bit as she took it 6-3 with a backhand slice winner and ace combo for the set. In the final set, Venus found herself in trouble in the last game with 2 ugly DFs, but got past them with JJ errors and at match point she hit a forehand that clipped the net for a winner. Venus would end up being 2nd best once again to Serena losing the final in straight sets.

The ITF Girls for their great playing that week. Lilia Osterloh and Alexandra Stevenson found themselves in the QFs and 2nd round of the 100K Ortisei. Alexandra Stevenson came through qualifying with straight set wins over a few Italians and then a tough win over Eva Birnerova. In the Main Draw she took down top 100 player Galina Voskoboeva 6-2 7-5. She would retire down 6-3 0-1 to 8th seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the 2nd round. Lilia Osterloh took down Catalina Castano in the first round quickly 6-1 6-2. In the 2nd round, she struggled through qualifier Anna Korzeniak 7-6(5) 6-4. Her run would end with a loss to Klara Zakopalova 6-0 6-2. Lexy lost to the eventual winner while Lilia lost to the eventual finalist.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for November 2 Goes to...

Riza Zalameda.

Riza Zalameda for being our little American Doubles Specialist and along side Basuki making the Doubles Final of 100K Taipei. Riza and Basuki in the first round took down 4th Seeds Kriz and Fellow American Carly Gullickson 7-5 2-6 14-12. In the QFs, they cruised past the Sema's 6-3 6-3. Then they followed up with another shocker beating 2nd seeds C. Chan and 2-time Grand Slam Champion Zi Yan 6-2 6-4. Their dream run in Taipei came to an end in the final with a loss to the top seeds, Yung-Jan Chan and Chuang, 2007 AO and USO Doubles runner-ups. Riza and Basuki lost a tight match with this great team 6-3 3-6 10-7. This great run from Riza is deserving of the POTW.

Honorable Mentions

The American Girls in Fed Cup for giving it their all in a losing effort to Italy in the Fed Cup Final 4-0. Melanie Oudin and Alexa Glatch looked awkward on the clay, but that didn't stop them from trying to give it their all out there to bring glory and honor to their team. USA was gunning to raise the Rose Bowl for the 18th time, but came up just short this year, their first final since 2003 and their last win was 2000. Alexa Glatch started off for USA in a losing straight set effort to Flavia Pennetta, who picked up her game in the second set. Melanie Oudin was the best of the American gals as she kept tight with the nervous Italians. Mel showed she can play at the USO and Fed Cup in February, but came up just short in this tie playing on red clay for just the very first few times professionally. Mel was leading by a break against Franny in the 2nd tie, but the rain came and washed away her game as she would lose to Franny and then the next day lose another tight straight setter to Flavia. USA wouldn't even win a match as Vania and Liezel lost a tight doubles rubber to Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani 11-9 in the third set STB. Roberta Vinci with this win remained undefeated in Fed Cup Doubles Rubbers.

Lauren Albanese for making the SFs of the Singles and Final of the Doubles in $25k Rock Hill. In the Singles, Lauren beat Piedade 4-6 6-0 6-3 in the first round, then Meng Yuan 6-3 3-6 7-5 in the Second round, and in the QFs took down up and coming Anastasia Pivovarova 6-2 6-7(2) 6-4 before running into red hot Sacha Jones who crushed Lauren 6-1 6-1. Lauren made the doubles Final with Hampton as WCs, but lost to Top Seeds Fichman and Tatishvili 7-6(5) 4-6 10-3.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for November 9 Goes to...

Coco Vandeweghe AND Varvara Lepchenko.

It was a hard decision between Coco and Varvara, so they will be splitting the Honor this week. Coco came through Qualifying and was able to make the QFs of the $50K in Phoenix. She beat Amanda Fink 6-1 6-2, Grace Min 7-5 6-0 and then Mashona Washington 6-4 6-2 to make it into the Main Draw. She then continued her great form taking down 5th Seeded Sharon Fichman 6-4 6-4 and then took down American rising star() Alison Riske 6-3 0-1 ret. Her run came to an end to the OTHER POTW Varvara Lepchenko. They both went in to this match and gave it their best, but before that, Varvara's road to this match involved wins over Hampton and Fuda. Lepchenko and Coco gave each other a highly contested first 2 sets as Varvs took it 7-5 and then Coco 6-4. In the third though it was all Varvara as she took it 6-0. Varvara kept her good form to take the title. In the SFs, she beat Rossana De Los Rios 6-0 6-0 and then ended Sacha Jones winning streak by crushing her 6-0 6-0. So not only did Varvara win this title without losing a set, but she won it with 5 consecutive bagels in the end

Honorable Mention

Alexandra Stevenson for making the QFs of 50K Phoenix. Firstly, Lexy got in on her own rank, but drew top seed Edina Gallovits. This didn't stop Sexy Lexy though as she turned into SUPER SEXY LEXY and took down another top 100 player with a shocking 2-6 6-2 7-5 win over Edina. Lexy continued by then beating Rebecca Marino 3-6 6-2 6-3 in the next round to make the QFs. Lexy then would injure her should and retire down 4-0 in the first against Anna Tatishvili.

Re: Team USA's Player of the Week

Player of the Week for November 16 Goes to...

Alexandra Stevenson.

It was another hard decision, but Sexy Lexy gets the nod as POTW for her run in $50K Toronto Lexy took down US Open Junior's Champion Heather Watson 6-2 6-4 in the first round and then Christina McHale 6-4 6-2. The latter was a shocking result, but the veteran's experience and annoying mother helped her through this one. Lexy would fall in the QFs to Camilla Giorgi in a thrillingly tight 3 setter. Camila took the first set 6-4 and then Lexy fought hard to win the second 7-6(1). Lexy fought hard and didn't retire as she gave it her best in a losing effort with a 7-6(2) loss in the third set. Lexy would lose to the eventual champion and gave her her toughest match of the entire tournament.
Honorable Mention

Mashona Washington for making the QFs of the 50K in Toronto as well. Mashona in the first round beat Lauren Albanese 6-3 6-0 and then followed up with a impressive win over 6th seed Sophie Ferguson 6-0 6-2. Mashona would give the Top Seed Stephanie Dubois a run for her money as she led 6-4, before Steph came back and was able to take the win 7-5 6-1 in the second and third. Mashona also made the Doubles Final with Fichman, but lost the Final to Drake and Jordin after retiring while up 3-2.

Lindsay Lee-Waters for making the QFs of 50K Phoenix. Lindsay was able to beat the 8th seed Andrea Hlavackova 6-3 6-4. In the second round, she beat Rebecca Marino 7-6(4) 3-6 6-2. She then ran into a much fresher opponent Aniko Kapros, and Aniko won 6-2 6-1. Aniko would be the eventual finalist.

Last, but not Least, is the shocking run to the SFs at $25K by Jennifer Elie. Jennifer came through the Qualifying with wins over Kristina Vesse 6-2 6-0 and Erin Liefeld 7-6(5) 4-6 6-0. In the Main Draw, she drew her 3rd straight Aussie, Bojana Bobusic. Jennifer won 57 62 76(5). Jennifer then took down 7th seed Marija Mirkovic 6-2 6-4. Followed up this win with a QF win over fellow Qualifier Richel Hogenkamp 6-3 7-6(5). Her run would come to an end in the SFs to former top 5 player, Alicia Molik 7-6(5) 6-4. Jennifer is one to watch for in the future

Btw, Jennifer is into the QFs this week of another Australian 25K. She just may sneak out the player of the week. Her main competition is Julia Moon Cohen who is into the QFs in Mexico
