Re: 2009-2010 College season
does anybody know if Miami's Julia Cohen will play in the spring? She is on the roster at the website, but didn't participate at all in the fall...just curious. I remember Miami head-coach saying after the NCAA that it's possible to build a dynasty..after all Vallverdu-the ONLY player to beat Gullickson, even Cecil lost to G at the team tourney-, Cohen & Eichkorn did really well at NCAA..but without Cohen it doesn't seem possible.. (from the way recruiting is going Florida seems to be closer to the goal ^^)

It is my understanding that a solid majority of the west coast coaches dislike this ITA Kickoff format and that there is a proposal to kill this off after the 2011 season. The costs of last flights (not reimbursed) is big for the top schools and all the schools find the match ups are nothing special ... and nobody wants to go to Waco which seems to always be left at the end.
And given the state of the tennis budgets right now (cuts cuts cuts)... a lot of schools really can't afford extra cross country travel right now. They'd prefer to save the money for their spring break 'outdoor' trips where they are less likely to run into bad weather and better prepare for their outdoor season.
Anyway, that's the word I heard. Could be gone after 2011 in it's present format.

While I understand some of that logic I don't understand Stanford's rationale considering its practically guaranteed to host every year. The men are playing the Kick-Off (and hosting) too. I know Coach Lele has also made a stink about the fall tournaments and the individual Indoor tournament. She said it was too early in the year and took too much time away from the studies of the students. However, of course they sent Barte/Burdette.
I don't buy the cost argument at Stanford considering it has lots of wealthy donors (I understand the times) but its in a much better financial situation than most colleges.

Re: 2009-2010 College season
I just came across a tournament that was played at the beginning of August. Its a mix of current, former, and future college players. It includes players like Tsay, Ellis, Radeva, Burdette, Chang, Matzenauer, Poorta, De Bruycker, Montez, Ramos, Sanchez, Tatsuno, Mahtani, and Schnack.
Tsay came away with the title over Ellis in three sets.
Fantic, Ramos beat Radeva 7-5, 6-4 hopefully Nelly will get her revenge in the spring duals

thanks for the info!
Ellis beat Schnack, Tatsuno, Sanchez -.-
And Tsay's hardest game was against Chang!
I knew Hemm wasn't bad, I saw her at Pomona summer circuit,
but she beat the #1 seed?
Some crazy results here , I'd rate Radeva battling close against Ramos also...crazy!
Dunno if Radeva is going to start at singles, though. I dunno about Davis and Goransson, are they any good?
Anyway, this Tsay..she bagelled Hardebeck today..wonder what her choice will be..

I think Tsay has pretty much written her ticket to Stanford. Given that Stanford has up to three scholarships, I would say Tsay is good enough to get one of them. Given her results I would be surprised if she was passed up.
Chang is a bit of a mystery to me. I have seen her play and frankly really not that impressed. In my opinion she will never be successful (90% win average) at any spot higher than No. 5/6. She could potentially play No. 4 for California but I think that's a big mistake...that's basically guaranteeing opponents an easy win at No. 4. However Chang has played tough against McKenna this year and I wonder if her game has improved. She'll definitely need to compete for playing time and keep her scholarship.
Radeva should be able to crack the line-up as there are two open spots in the starting line-up. I imagine Goransson has the other spot sewn up. Davis' game will get better in college, but Radeva will beat her out for a starting singles spot. I think Davis will be used primarily as a doubles specialist or No. 6/7 in her career at Cal (kind of like the former Jessica Shu). As for Siwosz, I imagine she will be used primarily for doubles as well. She has shown improvement since her Baylor days and I would say she has a legitimate shot at singles but given she is a senior I doubt Coach Augustus would invest a lot of playing time in her (it would be wiser for a freshman to get experience).
The problem with Cal's bottom three is I think they are at a somewhat similar level (Chang, Goransson, and Radeva). I'm hoping that Goransson will step it up. Cal's single line-up will probably be 1. Juricova, 2. Cossou, 3. Andersson, 4/5. Goransson, 4/5. Chang, 6. Radeva, 7. Davis, 8. Siwosz.
Doubles will probably be 1. Andersson/Juricova, 2. Cossou/Goransson, 3. Davis/Siwosz
Cal is going to have to hope they sweep No. 1-3 consistently against the top teams. The last two years they could get wins anywhere, which allowed them to come back from losing the doubles point. I miss Bobusic and Ilckinas already.

Re: 2009-2010 College season
Burdette, Ahn, Tsay..if T also goes to Stanford...dynasty again?
USC should hope to sweep the lower positions against Cal then Then the target would be Andersson, she's not that consistent..and Andersson/Juricova didn't really perform well in the fall, wonder how both teams adjust their doubles lineup.
And I miss both too. Bobusic almost won against Boonstra at NCAA. I was in tenterhooks (actually I was rooting for Boonstra.. )
And..I wonder if Juricova can win against Barte this season

MATCHES TO WATCH;
GT vs ASU ; if the Canadian player is any good, it'll be really interesting..
Arkansas vs UW
USC vs MICH ; Will Muresan keep up her good work?
Lady Vols vs UT ; I dunno the depth of Lady Vols, and I think UT's lineup is pretty solid..

Re: 2009-2010 College season
USC should keep Ramos at #2 Singles position.
Why?
In case of USC meeting NU at NCAA!
Then USC can switch Ramos to #1 and it will guarantee a win against Mosolova!
And then Sanchez can win #2, so 2 singles wins guaranteed!!

Re: 2009-2010 College season
ita results page is REALLY GOOD
I checked Gullickson's result this year;
http://itarankings.itatennis.com/Pla...=1&SeasonId=10
it seems now that Vallverdu is officially G's nemesis from NCAA semi, 3 match winning streak
Gullickson is the ONLY player to have won against Cecil at NCAA last year, mind you..
