i dont think its choking. she is just very inconsistent player and her serve often falls apart

Re: Kiki Bertens

I don't think Kiki is particularly more inconsistent than any other player Neither did she choke in this match.

Re: Kiki Bertens

Petko had a lot of nice things to say about Kiki

ANDREA PETKOVIC: I'm happy. I'm very happy. I'm relieved. But also happy. It was super tough, because I didn't know her at all. I just stalked her on YouTube yesterday the whole day, and I was already impressed yesterday. I saw her match against Ana in Australian Open, and I think she played super well. I think she's gonna be a force on the WTA when she gets fitter and recovers from her injuries that she's had.She has amazing strokes, really good serve. I wasn't surprised, but, you know, it's always tough when you are the hugefavorite and everybody expects you to win and then you have a super tough opponent. I'm relieved and very happy. It's nice to be back at the quarterfinal stag http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/ne...713090612.html

Well, I havent seen much other matches other than Fed Cup and this match, so I might be wrong. But the way I see it is that she can play both offensively and also defensively (especially on forehand, backhand is a bit weak in defense) In the Fed Cup she was under big pressure by Kurumi Nara, but she managed to stay in the points, so I dont think you can say she's normally inconsistent.

But when your nerves kill you and your arm isn't free, then its hard to keep that up. I'm sure if you play tennis yourself, you understand what I meant. She was steering the rallys most of the time, but then completely mistimed. The easiest to see was on serve, some DFs by a huge margin, on very important moments. For example 2-2 40-30. Had she won that point and hold her serve, I think she would have won.

The dutch commentary (Marcella Mesker I think?) suggested she should take a little more time for such points; try to breathe deeply and concentrate. I'm inclided to agree with that assessment. So, I think that the mental part is the most important thing that needs fixed. Otherwise she's got both the power and the touch to compete for top 20. Of course there's always room for improvement (2nd serve, defensive BH), but she's only 22!

Re: Kiki Bertens

I couldn't watch the match, but will check the highlights.
Such a close score. Impressive to start such a big match in a big stadium winning the 1st set 6-1

Shame she couldn't keep it up in the 2nd, but seems she kept fighting in the 3rd from a break down.

This is such a good experience for her and hope she can take what she has learned in the upcoming tournaments.

Some nice pics there with Kiki and Andrea at the net. Nice to see Kiki smile at the handshake

6 wins in a row and back in the top 100!
Not the toughest draw she had, but she did what she had to do and took her chances. Well done Kiki

Yeah, the handshake was really nice I really like Andrea for that, she is gracious when losing and she always gives credit where it's due.

Re: Kiki Bertens

So up almost 60 spots in the WTA ranking to 89

Got a bit of attention in the media the last week. Heard her on radio and televion and she seemed to handle it pretty well.

Almost nothing to defend now. Last year she reached the 2nd round of Toronto as a Q (100 WTA points, she also did that in Montreal 2012 so maybe she really likes Canada), but other than that R1 losses at Rosmalen, Wimbledon, Bad Gastein, Stanford, Washington and USO. After that she didn't play the rest of the year because of the ankle surgery. So she can improve her ranking even more. Her career high was 41 in April last year.

I don't mind her having to play Wimbledon Q. It's not her fave surface, but I don't think she is that bad on grass. The grass season is so short and there grass specialists out there who can upset higher ranked players only on this surface. Kiki doesn't play a warm up tournament so the 1st match can be really tough adjusting to the grass, depending on the draw ofcourse. Some players in Wimbledon Q may have played Nottingham 75k & Nottingham 50k/Birmingham so they are more used to it.

Back in top-100 That will help get access to some WTA tourneys in the summer hopefully, nothing to defend except for Toronto R2

Isn't there a chance she can play Rosmalen still *IF* she gets a WC for Wimbledon?

Yes, If she gets a WC for Wimbledon, she can ask for a WC in Rosmalen which will most likely be granted. But it depends on what the AELTC is gonna use as criteria for the WC's. Some players who did well at the Nottingham ITF's or players who did well at Wimbledon last year (for example Larcher de Brito) are also in the running for a WC. Somewhere this week they will be announced IIRC. We'll have to see and wait
