Question Parking Tickets in NYC

When I was in Manhattan a month helping my boyfriend move I parked on the street in front of his building, was fine for the whole week up until the day before I left when I got a ticket for being too close to the fire hydrant (and come to find out from my boyfriend the fire hydrant has been removed, so it wasn't even a functioning fire hydrant!).

I tried to appeal it, saying that because I am an out-of-state resident I shouldn't have to pay this fine because I'm not familiar with New York parking laws other than ones that were posted on the street. The decision came in the mail today with the general bureaucrat bullshit response and says that I still have to pay. I feel like I've heard of exemptions before for out-of-state drivers, is there anything I can do at this point? I especially think I shouldn't have to pay when it wasn't even a functioning fire hydrant. Or am I screwed if I have no evidence to offer? What evidence can I even offer?

as far as I know, parking too close to a fire hydrant is a violation everywhere regardless of if it works or not. I believe you are screwed.

Re: Parking Tickets in NYC

I don't think you really need to pay a parking ticket from a place where you don't live, unless you plan to be back there AND get more tickets/trouble while you are there.

Otherwise, just forget about it.

They don't take any action. Might send it to collections but you can ignore that too.

That's what I don't know either, is that a federal law or does every state get to set its own laws about fire hydrants?

Re: Parking Tickets in NYC

My cousin's friend lives in Michigan but was caught speeding in Ohio(he was going 5 miles over the speed limit) and he was given a ticket and he had to go see a judge like 2 months later, but in OHIO. So eventhough he lived in Michigan, he had to go all the way back to Ohio to see the judge and pay the ticket.

Re: Parking Tickets in NYC

Michigan/Ohio is a whole other issue, Ohio police hate Michigan drivers. But even at that, if it's something minor you shouldn't have to pay a fine if you're from out-of-state. I would never get a ticket here for being 5 over the limit.

Traffic ticket is different from a parking ticket. We are talking about a parking ticket.

Re: Parking Tickets in NYC

I know what you are talking about, thank you for pointing that out.

I was simply saying that story. NYC is notorious for giving out parking tickets for ANY reason and its very hard to get out of.

I live in NYC, I know. And as someone said, if it does go to collections, your credit report will be hurt which isn't worth it in the long run. Pay and get it over with.

I point it out because you can ignore a parking ticket out of state, but not a traffic ticket.

Re: Parking Tickets in NYC

the out of state story NEVER works in NYC because half the cars there are from out of staters. your best bet if it was a hand written ticket is that it is illegible or otherwise hard to understand. if i was a machine printed ticket check it CLOSELY on the day you get it for ANY mistakes and you can contest and win even if the date is wrong. if you that does not work just say you were more than 15 feet from the hydrant if THAT does not work you are SOL.

i am surprised they did not offer a reduction in the verdict, though.

this is true. in fact ALL commuters to NYC by car know that you have to budget for 4-6 parking tickets a year.

Do I sense some animosity here about me being in Manhattan and you didn't get into my pants?

If there's no other way to appeal this, I suppose I don't have an option but to pay it. Just sucks because at $115 that's the same price as a plane ticket to fly out there to see my boyfriend. And $115 is fucking ridiculous to have to pay when it's not a working hydrant.
