3. Nicole Vaidišová preview
---------------------------

Nicole followed up her mainly-disastrous 2008 with an even more disastrous start to 2009, for which she's currently in the red with a win/loss record of 8:9.

After beating Alla Kudryavtseva in the first round of Auckland, Nicole lost four matches in a row - including the Australian Open - some of them by deplorable scorelines.

After reinstating her stepfather Aleš Kodat as her coach in February, Nicole returned to some semblance of form at Indian Wells, where she beat #159-ranked Michaëlla Krajíček 6-3 6-4, #30 Alyona Bondarenko 6-3 6-1, and lost in the third round to #102 Jill Craybas: 6-4 6-3.

She did even better at Miami, beating #79-ranked qualifier Patricia Mayr 6-4 6-2 and crushing Alyona Bondarenko 6-1 6-0 before losing 6-1 6-4 to her old nemesis Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round.

Nicole is 3:3 for the clay-court season so far. At Marbella, she beat #139 Angelique Kerber 3-6 6-4 6-4, but lost 6-3 6-3 to #67 Roberta Vinci. At Barcelona, she beat #228 Yevgenia Savranska 6-2 6-4, then lost 6-2 6-3 to #44 Francesca Schiavone. At Rome, she hammered #279 Eloisa Compostizo de Andres 6-1 6-1, but lost 6-2 7-5 to #109 Yaroslava Shvedova.

Nicole is now ranked #59, having been as low as #80 after starting the year at #41. She was due to play qualifying for Madrid, but pulled out with a viral illness - I hope she's fully recovered!

Nicole has an intriguing draw: first a seemingly easy match against veteran Virginia Ruano Pascual, then potentially world #2 Serena Williams in the second round.

But Serena is currently on a 4-match losing-streak (starting with the Miami-final), has a knee-injury, and starts against Klára Zakopalová, who beat her at Marbella, so don't be surprised to see an all-Czech second round between Nicole and Klára!

3.1 First-round preview: Vaidišová v Ruano Pascual
--------------------------------------------------

World #133 Ruano Pascual is one of the oldest players on the WTA Tour at 35. Nicole crushed her 6-1 6-0 in their only meeting - San Diego 2006 - so she could hardly have asked for an easier first-round draw as she sets out to atone for last year's embarrassing first-round exit from the scene of her first Major semi-final (French Open 2006).

Ruano Pascual reached the quarter-finals of the French Open 1995, and is one of the few players linking that era of women's tennis to the current generation. But she is probably better known for stunning world #1 Martina Hingis 6-4 6-2 in the first round of Wimbledon 2001.

There's not much cause for concern in Ruano Pascual's 2009 results, as her win/loss record is a modest 4:7.

She beat Mariana Duque Marino 6-3 6-2 in the first round of the Australian Open, but Duque Marino was in a terrible slump at the time.

She won two matches to qualify for Indian Wells, but lost 6-4 6-1 to #63 Chan,Yung-Jan in the first round, and 6-4 6-2 to #81 Ayumi Morita in the first round of Miami.

Ruano Pascual's latest win came at Marbella, where she beat #61 Tathiana Garbin 6-1 2-6 6-1, then lost 6-2 6-3 to #20 Anabel Medina Garrigues. She lost 7-5 7-5 to #128 Karin Knapp in the first round of Stuttgart, and 6-4 6-3 to Anna Chakvetadze in the first round of Madrid.

I would be very disappointed if Nicole were to lose this match.

Andrew's first-round report

1. First-round scoreboard-report: Vaidišová v Ruano Pascual (Tuesday 26th May 2009)
-----------------------------------------------------------

- Nicole Vaidišová [EF] lt. Virginia Ruano Pascual, 4-6 3-6

Nicole's main problem was a failure to break serve: a feat she only accomplished when Ruano Pascual served for the match at 6-4 *5-2. Prior to that, Nicole had only three break-points: two at 2-1* in the first set, and one at 1-0* in the second.

Whereas Ruano Pascual converted 4 of 7 BPs: a single break in the vital seventh game was enough for her to take the first set; Nicole also lost her last three service-games of the match (from *2-2 in the second).

The other major problem was Nicole's whopping error-count: she had a W:UE ratio of 22:50 to Ruano Pascual's 7:9.

First set
---------
VAIDIŠOVÁ * * *___*_ 6
RUANO PAS _* * *@* * 4

The match was second on Court 17, and started at 15:46 CEST, at which time I was also following live scores for Daniela Hantuchová v Virginie Razzano.

Nicole serving 0-0: 40/0. Held.
Ruano Pascual serving 0-1: 15/0. 15/15. 40/15. 40/30. Held.
Nicole serving 1-1: 30/0. 30/30. 40/30. Deuce. Ad Nicole. Held.

Ruano Pascual serving 1-2: 0/15. 15/15. 15/30. 30/30. 30/40 (BP #1). Deuce #1. Ad Ruano Pascual. Deuce #2. Ad Ruano Pascual. Deuce #3. Ad Ruano Pascual. Deuce #4. Ad Nicole (BP #2). Deuce #5. Ad Ruano Pascual. Deuce #6. Ad Ruano Pascual. Held.

How important will that game prove to be? Three break-points go begging, while Ruano Pascual needed five game-points.

Nicole serving 2-2: 0/15. 40/15. 40/30. Held.

Judging by the BBC's current coverage of Đoković v Lapentti, it's cold and windy: big clouds of red dust are blowing up around the court.

Ruano Pascual serving 2-3: 0/15. 40/15. Held.
Nicole serving 3-3: 0/15. 15/15. 15/30. 30/30. 30/40 (BP). Broken.

It seems that game at *1-2 was very important: that's when Nicole had all her break-points, but now she's the broken one.

Ruano Pascual serving 4-3: 30/0. 30/15. 40/15. Deuce. Ad Ruano Pascual. Held.
Nicole serving 3-5: 0/15. 40/15. Held.
Ruano Pascual serving 5-4: 30/0. 30/15. 40/15 (SP #1). Ruano Pascual won the first set 6-4 at 16:30 (44m).

Last time I saw Nicole play, she was having big trouble returning serve. Didn't put up much resistance against Ruano Pascual's in that set.

Second set
----------
VAIDIŠOVÁ * *____@_ 3
RUANO PAS _* *@*@ @ 6

Nicole serving 0-0: 15/0. 40/15. Held.
Ruano Pascual serving 0-1: 0/15. 15/15. 15/30. 30/30. 30/40 (BP). Deuce. Ad Ruano Pascual. Held.

Only the second game in which Nicole has had break-point, and again she doesn't convert.

Nicole serving 1-1: 30/0. 30/15. 40/15. 40/30. Held.

Right now, both Nicole and Daniela Hantuchová are a set down and 2-1* up in the second...

Ruano Pascual serving 1-2: 15/0. 15/15. 40/15. Held.
Nicole serving 2-2: Broken to love.

Well, I guess that's that: a set and a break down, and Nicole hasn't broken serve at all today. Daniela is also a set and 2-3* down, but at least she's broken Virginie Razzano several times.

Ruano Pascual serving 3-2: 30/15. 40/15. Held.
Nicole serving 2-4: 0/30. 15/30. 15/40 (BPx2). Deuce #1. Ad Ruano Pascual (BP #3). Deuce #2. Ad Nicole. Deuce #3. Ad Ruano Pascual (BP #4). Broken.

Ruano Pascual serving 5-2: 15/0. 15/30. 15/40 (BP). Broken.

Nicole breaks for the first time in the match!

Nicole serving 3-5: 15/0. 15/15. 15/30. 30/30. 30/40 (MP #1). Ruano Pascual won 6-3 6-4 at 17:04 (second set 34m, match 1h18m).

2. Women's Doubles: First-round result (Wednesday 27th May 2009)
