To be completely honest, I think it is a brilliant idea. One of the few good ideas the WTA has come up with in recent years. The four semi finals of Rome are both the player who are most in need of getting a bye this week having all obviously played a lot last week, and they are the most deserving of getting the bye. These four girls earned their byes by their fine performances last week.
I think it is great that a bye can be earned by an unranked player if they perform well enough the previous week. Why should it always be the top seeds who automatically get the byes? Just because we are used to it being that way doesn't make it right. The top seeds have been pampered enough over the years. These byes are great because they favour equality. No one gets an automatic bye. The byes go to those who need them most. I love it.

If Kanepi had beaten Azarenka she would have deserved a bye for her strong effort the previous week. She would also have benefited from it more than some of the top seeds who lost early last week and as a result are well rested. The four semi finalist would have to play again on Monday if the did not get byes. Venus, Azarenka, Safina and Kuznetsova deserved their byes. Jankovic, Serena and Dementieva are rested and don't need the byes. They don't deserve them either.

What if the players that all got byes were unseeded and in the same quarter 
It's a good idea in theory, but it could go HORRIBLY wrong.

Mauresmo-Elena third round should be awesome
Hantuchova will get crushed by Dulko in Rd 1
V - Woz match up will be hot
Serena-V quarter - Vee will crush her (Karma still won't be nice to Serena)
It'll be a Safina-Vee final, Safina winning.

If that's true then I think it's a great idea - people getting rewarded for doing well rather than punished by having no rest time between tournaments. Other tournaments should follow this structure.
