Haute, it sounds like you are talking about Pataki which was a few years ago.
I think I got myself confused thinking about another state (thinking maybe about Vermont), forgot that Paterson was the one who introduced the bill.

Re: Maine passes Gay Marriage; awaiting Governor's signature

It's official. Senate repassed the bill and the Governor signed it.

Maine is officially gay.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/usTopN...5455B620090506

Quote:
BOSTON (Reuters) - Maine's governor signed a bill on Wednesday legalizing same-sex marriage, clearing the way for the northeastern U.S. state to become the fifth in the nation to allow same-sex marriage.

"I have read many of the notes and letters sent to my office, and I have weighed my decision carefully," Democratic Governor John Baldacci said in a statement. "I did not come to this decision lightly or in haste."
Rest of article there.

Congratulations go to the people of Maine!

Re: Maine becomes the 5th State in the US to legalize Gay Marriage

This is the fifth state now; that makes three so far this year and one just last year (CT). It seems like the movement has accelerated, and ironically, I think the ballyhooing on both sides over the failed Prop 8 has had a huge impact on the progress this year. Have any pundits attempted predictions for all the other states yet - when the issues will be opened for consideration, and whether such consideration will result in a change in the status quo?

Re: Maine becomes the 5th State in the US to legalize Gay Marriage

Not so fast. If they get 55000 signatures before Sep 14 they can put it to a vote and it will not be enacted till it is accepted by voting maybe till 2010 or whenever the next elections are.

Also NH has passed the bill so all it needs is that the governor does not veto it. He can say he is against gay marriage and does not sign it. If he does not sign for 5 days the bill is accepted anyways.

you know, it really annoys me, when i see someone saying that domestic partnerships or civil unions offer the "same benefits" as marriage. they don't.
that is just propoganda perpetuated by people who want things to stay the same as they are.
I can't file taxes with my "spouse". i had to go through hell to get my "spouse" as a part of my benefit's package, and i have to fill out additional paperwork just to have my "spouse" be my beneficiary if anything happens to me.

So please save the "it's just like marriage" mumbo jumbo, because it's not fucking true.

Re: Maine becomes the 5th State in the US to legalize Gay Marriage

The benefits -- all New York companies have to offer it. If you had difficulty, maybe it was your employer.

Taxes are a federal issue. DOMA is supposed to be repealed by you know who but we'll see. When talking about just New York state, it is essentially the same. Domestic partnerships DO offer the same benefits. New York cannot help federal law. Even if it were marriage, the federal government still does not recognize it.

The paperwork and vocabulary have not caught up to the changes but they are essentially the same. I would advise getting married out of state since New York does honor foreign marriages.

Like lalit said, New Hampshire passed it as well. Awaiting for the Governor to do something or ... not do something (5 days).

we are not right next to each other she is at least 5 feet away and we have different computers. she is on a pc

sorry about the delay,

but look at all the stuff moon posted:

Spouse benefits from work:
companies that offer spouse benefit can and DO ignore and give gay couples second class citizenship.

Can not claim any benefits that require "marriage"
speaking of citizenship, you are not "married" so if you are applying to be a citizen you can not state that you are married to a citizen.

Hospital:
hospitals dont have to give you visitation rights, if you want to GUARANTEE them you have to fill out and file extra form with your doctor and the state

Inheritance:
if anything should happen to either of us, there is no guarantee that the other would get the property/belongings things. i know that sounds minor, but the thought that distant relatives can come from the woodwork and try to take any inheritance. which sounds like a minor issue but it is not.

medical:
any medical service that i get, my wife will and does get tax as earned income, which does not happen with "marriages". this deals and addition and unneed financial burden.

Name changes:
at the time of civil union name changes can be done, but extra work is required.

in your place:
many companies will not allow the right to make choices in place of your gay spouse as they would straight married couples.

Interesting. Sounds like you have to do an extra piece of work simply because other couples get lucky and the parts fit.

You should write an article/blog about that. I am sure lots of NY couples would love to hear first-hand experience of a situation like that. Even send it to the NY Congressmen and women when the gay marriage legislation is debated.

yeah having to get a "letter of acceptance" and like 4 extra forms to get spousal health care is definitely extra.

but there are quite a few good articles on the difference between civil union and marriage.

I didn't think that you were "disagreeing" or "happy" with the vote. I quoted your post simply because I wanted to comment on the fact that Californians were allowed to vote on whether people should get equal rights.

To add...

Maine's governor said this... "In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions." "I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

That to me is key... if a government entity performs civil ceremony marriages for heterosexual couples, they should for homosexual couples as well.

That's what it's about. Religion just has no place in this issue. Churches do not have to perform same sex weddings. Of course, that would be the icing on the (wedding)cake

Re: Maine becomes the 5th State in the US to legalize Gay Marriage; NH next

I guess we could make this the gay marriage thread. With so many recent and daily developments, I feel bad creating so many threads.

Quote:
New York Assembly Approves Gay Marriage Bill

Late Tuesday, the New York Assembly approved a gay marriage bill for a second time, reports the AP.

Passage of Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell's gay marriage bill came as no surprise to Albany watchers who say the real fight lays ahead in the senate.
http://www.ontopmag.com/article.aspx...=1&Category=26

As for New Hampshire, the paperwork bureaucracy is still going on and it has not been given to Gov. Lynch yet so the 5-day countdown has not started yet although the bill was passed last week.
