Re: Ranks

I imagine Aga and JJ are both catching her up too Vika better not lose early in Miami or she could find herself down to 9 before long. She should gain quite a bit on Dementieva in Charleston and Stuttgart because Lena has SF points from both and isn't playing either of them this season.

Re: Ranks

After Miami, what does her points defense look like? Hopefully she can gather more points during the clay season.

I'm so nervous for Miami.

Re: Ranks

She still has a 850 point lead over Radwanska going into Miami and 465 over JJ (165 if JJ wins the final tomorrow). It's quite possible she'l drop to 8th after Miami because JJ has nothing to defend there but i don't think she'l fall below Radwanska unless she goes out before the QF and Aga gets to at least the SF's again. JJ's Marbella points come off the week after Miami though so it may not be for long. As for the clay season - well Vika only has 320 points to defend in Rome and basically nothing else, so plenty of opportunities to gain points and stay in the top 8 before RG which is what she needs.

Re: Ranks

I've taken 2009 Miami points off for the top10:

Serena 7945 (not playing)
Caro 6120
Safina 6090 (not playing)
Kuznetsova 5540
Venus 5181
Dementieva 4965
Jankovic 4760
Radwanska 3945
Vika 3935
Stosur 3261

Not top10:
Sharapova 3185 (not playing)
Li 3086
Pennetta 3020
Wickmayer 2961
etc

Vika is still safe inside the top10, but will have to do at least one round better than Radwanska to stay in top8. She will lose significant ground to the top 6-7.

Re: Ranks

I've had some time to kill and I've subtracted all points from the 2009 clay season (up until Madrid, which is the last tournament played to change seeding for Roland Garros) as well.

The 15th and 16th means how many points their worst result are worth. All of those players with 0 or 1 will gain points as soon as they win a match, whereas e.g Dementieva, Radwanska will have to win a few rounds.
It was a bit difficult to do as the Premier-5 rule complicates things together with the fact that the Rome entry list isn't out yet.
But it gives us the picture that Vika needs to work hard to get the 8th seeding at Roland Garros. The 2009 Miami and Rome points carry a lot of weight.

1. Serena 7940 (15th=110, 16th=0)
2. Wozniacki 4951 (15th=130, 16th=1)
3. Venus 4762 (15th=1, 16th=0)
4. Dementieva 4680 (15th=200, 16th=60)
5. Kuznetsova 4512 (15th=60, 16th=1)
6. Jankovic 4151 (15th=120, 16th=1)
7. Safina 4031 (15th=60, 16th=1)
8. Radwanska 3795 (15th=120, 16th=60)
9. VIKA 3381 (15th=1, 16th=0)
10. Sharapova 3185 (15th=120, 16th=0)
11. Stosur 3176 (15th=60, 16th=60)
12. Li 2942 (15th=1, 16th=1)
13. Pennetta 2940 (15th=200, 16th=130)
14. Clijsters 2860 (15th=0, 16th=0)
15. Wickmayer 2676 (15th=90, 16th=80)
16. Bartoli 2656 (15th=60, 16th=1)
etc

If I remember, I will update this post as the clay season progresses.

Re: Ranks

Thanks for doing that Christina. Let's hope she has a good start in Charleston/Marbella/Stuttgart and that will cover her Rome points and maybe even begin to gain on top of them

Re: Ranks

Thanks for doing the number crunching, Christina!

Vika's really going to need a couple of really good clay court tournaments it seems, a title somewhere would be the best case scenario. I really hope she can defend the majority of her points in Miami though to start with.

So Vika can basically surpass Aga on the rankings if she does well in Marbella ?

Re: Ranks

If she reaches SF she will pass Aga for a while. But Vika has a lot of points to defend in Rome, so Aga is in the best position to be #8 for Roland Garros as it looks now.

Ah I see. How many points does she need to defend in Rome ? Like 400 points right ?
Well Vika also has Charleston, Stuttgart and Madrid to win points after Marbella. So I think there's still hope for a top 8 seeding.
Thanks Christina.
