Re: Ranks
as far as I can calculate, Vika gained more weeks as number 1 as Maria lost in the final of Miami and has withdrawn from Charleston. Which means even if Vika loses in the first round of Madrid and Maria wins the event (and Stuttgart), Vika will lead with 40 points. So now she is guaranteed to be number 1 the week after Madrid. Then Rome is played and anything can happen, but
she is guaranteed to be number 1 until week 21 (week 21 being her last week) = 16 weeks guaranteed.
Other number ones in history:
STEFFI GRAF 377* AUGUST 17, 1987
MARTINA NAVRATILOVA 332 JULY 10, 1978
CHRIS EVERT 260 NOVEMBER 3, 1975

MONICA SELES 178 MARCH 11, 1991
SERENA WILLIAMS 123 JULY 8, 2002

LINDSAY DAVENPORT 98 OCTOBER 12, 1998

JELENA JANKOVIC 18 AUGUST 11, 2008
JENNIFER CAPRIATI 17 OCTOBER 15, 2001

Re: Ranks
How does your calculation work?
If Vika loses her 1st match in Madrid, she will lose 700 points. Sharapova only has 90 points to defend in Madrid, which means she can (by winning the tournament) gain more than 900 pts! If this happens, there's no way Vika will still be #1 after Madrid.

Re: Ranks
True, I miscalculated, Vika will be behind by 75 points if Masha wins Stuttgart and Madrid and Vika loses her first match in Madrid and doesn't reach final in Stuttgart. Vika needs 80 points level with Masha, meaning a R32 in Madrid (still assuming Vika won't gain points in Stuttgart and Masha wins Stuttgart), R16 in Madrid will mean Vika has more points than Masha.
You are probably forgetting that during the week Madrid points will be added, 2011 Rome will come off, and Masha has 900 points from winning Rome in 2011 whereas Vika only made the QF and those points aren't included in her 16th best.

Re: Ranks
Vika reaching SF in Madrid and Masha crashing out in QF will guarantee Vika the #1 spot at least until French Open. The French Open can bring us a new number 1, but nothing can take it away from Vika before that.

Re: Ranks
I was wondering about that, but isn't Agnieska playing Brussels? ( ) So mathematically if she won Madrid Rome and Brussels could she not overtake Vika?

Re: Ranks
nope. Not if my calculations are correct.
If Vika loses SF in Madrid and doesn't reach SF in Rome (a QF will not be among her 16 best, so she needs at least SF to gain points) she will end up having 8770.
If Aga wins Madrid, Rome and Brussels she will have 8600

Re: Ranks
I haven't done any calculations but as far as I remember neither Maria or Vika have anything to defend before Wimbledon. Then Vika has 900 points and Maria 1400 points to defend:
Maria now: 9490
Vika now: 8800
Subtracting Wimbledon 2011:
Maria 8090
Vika 7900
so 2012 wimbledon result will determine which player will be number 1, until then, the number 1 position belongs to Maria

Re: Ranks
Only if she makes the final, otherwise depends on Radwanska. If Vika loses tomorrow, Radwanska has to make the final. If Vika loses in SF, Radwanska has to win the tournament.

Re: Ranks
Vika returned to the number 1 position today. It is her 20th week. All time number 14 in number of weeks together with Clijsters. From now and until the Olympics, not much is going on, so Vika will keep the number 1 ranking until the Olympics. Whatever happens there will determine who will be number 1. It can go two ways: Vika, or Masha. If my calculations are correct the maximum number of points Masha can reach (by winning OG) is 8935 and Vika isn't losing any points so even if she loses first round at the Olympics she will have 8800.
So:
Vika Gold = 9165
Vika Silver = 8950
Masha Gold = 8935
Vika Bronze = 8820
Vika SF= 8800
Vika QF = 8800
Vika R16 = 8800
Vika R32 = 8800
Vika R64 = 8800
Aga Gold = 8745
Masha Silver = 8720
Serena Gold (and winning Stanford) = 8045
So Vika will be number 1 for at least 23 weeks, bringing her to 12th in weeks spent at number 1, surpassing Masha and Austin who both have spent 21 weeks.

Re: Ranks
Vika needs to win just 1 more round robin match to earn the year-end #1 right?
