It's silly. The woman was suffering from a disc problem in her back and sought treatment for it. It's not like she went out and decided to cheat, or to snort cocaine for fun like you know who. There has to be some flexibility in the rules to acommodate medical treatments.

I'm sure, if it works, that she'll be happy to trade her health for any penalty levied against her.

Re: Tamira Paszek News and Articles Thread

yeah, she said it works.
One week ago she couldn't get out of the bed, so she decided to do that. Now it's getting better every day.

She also announced to come back in Cincinnati.

Well it's nice that she is getting better and some sort of treatment is working. I think calling it doping is a bit extreme =/ Thanks for the translation Joe & thanks for the article I Heart Mimi

Paszek gives a statement

Tennis player Tamira Paszek gives her side of facts towards NADA concerning the assumed autologous transfusion.

The exact explanation of her Mongolian doctor is not yet entirely available.

Paszek said on a press conference that because of the pain in her back she looked for help which she got from that Mongolian doctor. She took blood from Tamira and added homoeopathic essences to it and then put it back to her body.

There has never been a similar case says NADA.

Re: Tamira Paszek News and Articles Thread

The thing is that if what she says is true... it isn't really doping, imo, but if they make "loopholes" like that when it comes to blood transfusions it could cause a lot of different problems and cases... so she mite be used as an "example"...

Re: Tamira Paszek News and Articles Thread

To call something like that "doping", I would hope that whoever is responsible for investigating would be required to show that she did it purposefully and with the intent to gain a competitive advantage--and that whatever was added was in fact a performance enhancing substance. Otherwise, it is totally ludicrous. And how practical is it that in seeking medical treatment for a painful injury you should have to 1) apply for this "theraputic remedy" exemption to the doping rules and 2) wait until that is approved before getting treatment. Athletes have short shelf lives. They earn a living by being on the court, not in bed, and they have to do what they can to get healthy and back to action as soon as posssible.

To put it in perspective, what if she had a rare blood type and had decided to give blood to store in case of a later emergency--people do this and their blood is kept in medical facilities until needed by them. If she later has an accident and gets a transfusion with this blood, can it really be classified as doping under applicable rules, as stated by Hans Holdhaus in the quote above?

The very fact that she is the one who reported it undermines any suggestion that she is a villain or a cheat, or had an improper motive, I would think.

Re: Tamira Paszek News and Articles Thread

VIENNA (AP)—Austrian tennis player Tamira Paszek faces a provisional suspension while officials investigate whether a medical treatment she received for a back injury violated doping regulations.

The Austrian anti-doping agency has asked its discplinary committee to temporarily ban Paszek.

Committee chairman Gernot Schaar said Wednesday that Paszek has seven days to respond.

The 18-year-old player received treatment earlier this month. Blood was taken for enrichment and later reinjected in the lower part of her back. Reinjecting one’s own blood is banned under international anti-doping rules.

The 59th-ranked Paszek alerted the doping agency eight days ago, saying she had not been aware the treatment was possibly illegal.

Re: Tamira Paszek News and Articles Thread

Going to get a lot worse. She had QF points at Montreal (or did those come off last week?), 2R points at the USO and then a final to defend from Bali. She'll be lucky to stay in the top 150.

Not sure what has happened to her, really. The talent is certainly there. So is the mental fight. I just think she was born about a decade too late. The game requires tall, muscular players these days. Tamira will always be at a disadvantage against the top players, and in order to compete with them, she actually has to hit with more effort than they do, to generate the same level of power. I fear that this has taken and will continue to take a toll on her body. She plays well in spurts, then goes through a littany of injuries. Earlier this year, she was headed in the right direction, with a great week in Miami followed by a great week in Ponte Vedra. Then she fell on her hand in Charleston, got sick, and her back problems worsened. Since Ponte Vedra, she's basically accomplished nothing.

She's still young, so there's hope. But, sad to say, like last year, 2009 has been a near total write-off.

Austrian teletext says Tamira won't get suspended.

The NADA gave an opinion in order who says now that it wasn't blood-doping.

That was the only reasonable decision. Good for Tamira. Sorry that she had to go through that, though. They really just dragged her name through the mud for nothing.

Now get better soon and come back strong!

Tamira has a lot of potential. I hope her back heals up.

They never seem to have any flexibility to accommodate medical treatments. The companies who are making a lot of money from this drug testing and anti doping arrangement have no interest in protecting the players. I think one day that will have to change though, the players will rebel. I have seen enough of the way the ITF, WTA and ATP treats players to know that they don't care about the wellbeing of any players. Only name players can sometimes, if they are determined, throw their reputation around and get lesser sentences, due in part to media influence. Volandri was banned for a few months just for using his asthma inhaler like twice instead of once during an asthma attack. They wouldn't let him off on a technicality. They took his prizemoney for a few months back. They consider it more money that they can get back.

I hope Tamira gets better and returns to top level tennis. But I really dislike the way the WTA and ITF have been handling these drug accusations. The ITF, the WTA and ATP are not doing enough to protect their players. They are just letting the drug testing and anti doping companies have their way with players without doing anything to defend their name. It's as if they are afraid of them- so if a person is accused of doping, the ITF backs away and tries to distance themselves from them instead of waiting to see the truth. Tamira would never cheat. I can tell just by watching her. She just wants to be able to play.

Both the WTA and ATP probably need player unions, like they have in some other sports. Initially, the ATP was a players union, but now the players are just bit players being told what to do by corporations. The women aren't much better off.

Tamira, hope you get better
