Re: Croatian women on ITF entry lists

Wild cards have been announced for Zagreb next week:

Main draw
Vrljic
Lisjak
Akiki
Romanova (Huh?!? She's not Croatian, is ranked #1071 and has only won four matches over the last 12 months--all in qualies and three of them at $10K's)

Wouldn't it have been better to give a WCM to Mrdeza or Njiric?

Qualies
Banovec
Kraljevic
Susak
Mijacika (Attempting a comeback? Hasn't played since June 2006)

Should have given a WCQ to Mikulcic, if you ask me...

Really, why the hell they didn't give a WC to Silvija or Tereza?
Or Ana SAVIC maybe !?!

Re: Croatian women on ITF entry lists

njiric couldn't get one because of age restrictions (i don't know what the rule is, but she was born two days too late to get a wc and the wta refused to make an exception for her)

Ah, that makes sense--thanks for the explanation. I'm OK that they didn't make an exception for her. It's best when rules are the same for everyone

Re: Croatian women on ITF entry lists

Results from final round of Zagreb qualies:

Antonela SUSAK (CRO) defeated Dijana BANOVEC (CRO) 16 62 64
Ani MIJACIKA (CRO) defeated Romana TABAKOVA (SVK) 63 64

In R1 of the MD, Susak plays Lisjak and Mijacika plays Voracova.

It'll be interesting to watch Mijacika's comeback. Before this week, she hadn't played in a tournament since June 2006. In 2005 she won one $10K and was runner up at another. In 2006, she won two $10Ks, was runner up at another and a semifinalist at two more. So far this week she has beaten players ranked #545, #403 and #595, and all in straight sets.

Her career-high ranking is from July 2006, when she reached #415. She's still relatively young--turned 22 last month--so who knows what lies ahead for her?

Do any of you know why she was away from the tour for three years? Was she studying at university? If so, her story might be similar to Pandzic's.
