- Form adding the UCI results has nothing to do with getting a good read on the upcoming LBS @ SDSU match.

- I thought Hannah Grady should have received Player of the Week this week. Next week I think UCI's Brooke Bartlett should get the Player of the Week honors for beating FIU's real #1.

- When UCI vs Cal was canceled with no make-up date scheduled I thought maybe UCI removed a loss from its schedule. But looks like the UCSB SID added it back on. Take a look at what the top notch UCSB SID had on the front page of their women's tennis page. Quick see here.

Not to worry... UOP beat UCSB 5-2 today

Looks like an Eater v Mustang season... maybe LB can hold on for 3rd with UOP and UCSB...

Big West's 1-2 punch strategy

I love this year's SoCal road trip 1-2 punch trap strategy in scheduling.

It would be tough for any team ranked outside the top 40 to play Long Beach St. and UC Irvine back to back days and come away sweeping both teams.

Florida International
def. #42 LBS 4-3 on Sat. 2/7
lost #65 UCI 2-5 on Sun. 2/8

Still to come:

#61 St. Mary's
at #45 LBS Sat. 2/28
at #65 UCI Sun. 3/1

Nevada
at #45 LBS Fri. 3/13
at #65 UCI Sat. 3/14

#39 Denver
at #45 LBS Sat. 3/21
at #65 UCI Sun. 3/22

Now this 1-2 punch works better if the higher ranked team throws the 1st punch. That 1st team should drag it out to a 4+ hour match for the strategy to work best.

Otherwise it won't be as effective like with UCSB & Cal Poly's 1-2 punch.

San Francisco
at NR UCSB Sun. 3/8
at Cal Poly Mon. 3/9

#61 St. Mary
vs NR UCSB Tues. 4/7
vs #70 Cal Poly Wed. 4/8

They got it right here.

#65 UC Irvine
at #70 Cal Poly Sat. 2/21
at NR UCSB Sun. 2/22

Dartmouth
at #70 Cal Poly Fri. 3/20
at NR UCSB Sun. 3/22

Big West Player of the Year

Hey Form what criteria do they use to determine the Big West Player of the Year?

If they use conference head-to-head records than POY right now is a 3 woman race between Jenifer Widjaja, Hannah Grady and Stephanie Hammel. The only #1s still undefeated in conference play.

I wonder if Hammel locked up Freshman of the Year with that win over Suzie Matzenauer?

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Coaches vote. Is Widjaja eligible? I thought she was an $87,000 professional who is 2 years in violation of the 20 year old rule?

UCLA adds CS Fullerton

Hey Form I just saw UCLA adding CSF to their schedule, taking a road trip to Fullerton no less.
Any idea why UCLA would do this?

Speaking of Fullerton they just defeated Siena 6-1. That must make Siena one of the worst Division 1 teams by default. And Siena even has a win over Hartford, another D1 team, 7-0.

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Who did Siena bagel? New winner of worst D1 team ever.

UCLA to CSF

First, why does UCLA have an unused match date unless someone else cancelled (economy). I don't recall them having a match rained out.

OK, real reason and WHY UCLA is going to CS Fullerton.

- Nina Pantic has a ## number of matches she must sit out as a penalty for some NCAA pre-college eligibility violation.

UCLA is trying to hustle as many matches in... automatic wins and willing to travel to CSF who has no budget.... just get Pantic eligible as soon as possible.

I would guess you will also see UCLA 'clear the bench' with a line up like:
1. Joelson (she has match dates avaiable due to injuries)
2. AV Lind
3. Seguso
4. Wetmore
5. Dockendorf
6. Barto

They win easy and get another match date so they can get Pantic eligible by the time the start Pac 10 play.

UCLA adds CS Fullerton

UCI's match at UCLA was rained out and was to be made up at a later date.

So what does CS Fullerton get out of all this, a payout?

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Because UCLA needs this match asap to get Pantic eligible, I am guessing they replaced UCI with CSF.... UCI couldn't find a fast enough make up date.

Payout.. in college tennis... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

It's the privelege of getting creamed.... that's what CSF gets... plus UCLA probably paying for the officials since they are in need of the match asap.

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Some predictions

1. Florida International will upset #32 Tulsa. With wims over #42 Long Beach St. & #32 Tulsa, FIU's ranking may climb into the 30's.

2. Will Widjaja suffer her 1st loss against Fresno State's Melanie Gloria? Either way Widjaja should crack the top 75 singles next week.

3. #69 SMU will have a big ranking jump next week after defeating #17 Arkansas.

Re: UCLA adds CS Fullerton

Hey Form the privilege of playing UCLA may have already paid off for Cal State Fullerton. They just got a verbal from Tiffany Mai.

By going to Fullerton instead of the Army, I guess Mai doesn't want to be all she can be.

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Great line... LMAO Now I can't stop humming that dang song...

I got a good one just for you Gouci:

That recruit's mom was at LB match Friday pitching daughter to everyone (coaches, players, many fans). She dropped this line: "Tiff beat Brooke Bartlett all the time in the juniors. She is good enough to be Irvine's # 2".

Don't worry. That one didn't float...

nor was any offer given so the CSF verbal during the UCLA whoopin one day later fits.

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Tiff WAS a 5 star caliber player in the juniors as a high school freshman. She is a very good doubles player and can even play for UCI as a doubles specialist.

She's not a bad player. The mom was just pitching to the wrong tier schools. Mai could make the line-up at UCR, UCD, LMU, Santa Clara etc. So didn't need to panic and accept the 1st offer specially from a last place team.

Did mom clarify if Mai was a senior or junior in high school this year? Seemed to be pitching kinda late for a senior.

Re: Big West - 2009 predictions

Agree with your entire statement. Shocking. :-)

But remember that many So Cal tennis juniors have attitude about that 'lower tier' ...

Senior.
