What she said? I tried to translate it but the translation wasn't good so I didn't understand.

At the moment I am not able to put a structure into my game. My strokes are good, but I can't follow my matchplan.

Re: Mona Barthel

Probably the translation was not that bad.
As is the one here.
But if you don't understand what that means -
well, then you are completely right. No wonder she is not
able to regroup when her match analysis consist only of
hollow phrases.

Sounds like she is missing the "knack" of matchplay, or pressure play. There is no substitute for it. It's the difference between hitting or practicing well and playing well in matches. Clearly certain things- such as the serve- are letting her down under pressure and not allowing her to play her game the way it should be played.

Nah I think she pretty much nailed it. It´s not that she doesn´t play enough matches. She doesn´t have a basic concept what her own game should be. When she rose through the ranks she benefited from her confidence, an excellent 1st serve percentage and the basic assumption that all players will make against an unknown opponent, namely that the backhand is the weaker side. As the opponent´s became more familiar with her game it became more and more obvious that her movement and defensive forehand are really weak. Simultaniously her confidence and 1st serve percentage dropped. So that´s the point she found herself in around the summer.

Her defensive weaknesses would suggest a hyper-aggressive style (depending on confidence and a 1st serve), but she missed a lot of shots and subsequently lost a lot of matches. At the start of the year I marvelled at the progress she had made in the movement department compared to her match against Wozniacki last year, when she missed everything on the run. Now she is back at that point and I think she needs a real good coach that gives her a clear direction what the structure of her game should be like. I think it has to be the shotmaker-approach like Kvitova or Davenport. With the extreme grip she has on her forehand I just don´t see that ever being transformed into a reliable defensive rallying shot. I think she has the natural power, serve, shot-making and net skills to become a strong offensive-minded player. Maybe not as successful as Kvitova will be, but in the Ivanovic mold.

Re: Mona Barthel

Cibulkova and Tatishvili withdrew, Begu (LL) def. Castano (LL), Paszek lost again early to Mattek-Sands, typical year end tournament with many retirements, tired players etc., a shame that Mona couldn´t take advantage of it but she is a victim of the long season herself.

Re: Mona Barthel

Oh I didn't mean that it came from a lack of matchplay. I just meant that she couldn't get the various parts of her game to cohere into a sensible match style.

So what she said in German meant that she didn't understand what the structure of her game should be, as opposed to being merely unable to execute the plan? With her strengths and weaknesses I would have thought the correct gameplan structure was obvious. Then again, what is obvious to one person may not be obvious to another. I agree with your post in general.

Her game should be built around her powerful serve and easy timing. She cannot afford to defend too much but she also doesn't need to totally "overpower" her opponents the way Ana tries to. She should create attacks by hitting smoothly, deeply. Her attacks should arise smoothly out of her timing and placement, eventually leading to short balls and net play. Her opponents need to feel like "This b**ch is overpowering me, and she's not even trying!"

Exactly. Whenever she gets a low bounce on her forehand, as well as her backhand, she should create smart angles and stay away from placing it in the middle of the court. High bounces on either wing should be ripped flat down the line mostly of the times. Second serves have to be placed to the backhand of the opponents. She should really work on getting some sort of kick or twist into her serve, slicing it to the forehand is horrible. But basically her first serve and her backhand are the keys of her game. She needs to find that controlled aggression in these two shots again.
Good luck, Mona!
