Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling

Hilde Krahwinkel Sperling (full name Hildegard Krahwinkel)--sometimes called "Hilda"

Born in Essen, she was the eldest in a family of 6 children. Worlld War One was a tough time for the family. This would have been especially acute due to the blockade the Allies put on Germany both during and after the conflict. As the eldest child "she was responsible for feeding the family during the worst years of the shortage. It was an experience Mrs Sperling told other lawn tennis players she hoped never to endure again" (Sydney Morning Herald, 03 May1940, p22)

She was courted by artist Ernest Stumpp, who drew at least two pencil portraits of her in 1929. Krhawinkel eventually wed fellow tennis player Svend Sperling, a Danish lawyer by profession.

Detailed results will have to wait, but hopefully most of her titles can be traced down. The greatest German before Steffi Graf, Hilde was feared on clay courts, going unbeaten for over 2 years (1935-37) and winning Roland Garros 3 years running (1935-37), a record unmatched until Monica Seles repeated it from 1990-92.

Early 1920s

No known accounts of her in tennis tournaments at this time. There is some evidence she was a cross country runner.

The women's final is the most tedious in memory. This year's Wimbledon had searing heat, and both finalists had blisters on their feet. Neither woman could run or hit hard. The pat-ball tennis was so boring that some people left the stands-unheard of for a ladies final. Cilly had more weapons and closed out a close second set.

Mathieu wins the Cup outright with her 3rd straight victory at Beaulieu. More importantly, she outlasts German born Sperling, whom she never beats! The straight set match took 2 hours 45 minutes. Simone was down 2-5 as Hilde was her usual backboard. Simone decided to give as good as she got, and up went the lobs. "and on and on went the points. At 11:30 the score was 5-all; at 11:55 Mathieu led 6-5. at 12:30 Mathieu won the set 7-5. Two games in one hour! Sperling was completely done in, and the second set went rapidly to Mme Mathieu." Hilde did not participate in the French championships 1938 because she wanted to focus on her chance to win Wimbledon. So she went to England on May 23rd. She wanted to get used to the grass courts.

The days just before her departure she played in her clubs, K.B. (Københavns Boldklub), championship, and won the singles with ease in singles (6-1, 6-0 against Mrs. Bergh Nielsen, May 20.) and mixed doubled. Apparently she never lpst in a singles to a Dane.

*Note that for now I am not counting Copenhagen in august as a separate event. I suspect this is equal to the Danish Hard Courts (or Outdoors) event.
