Re: Articles and Interviews

Of course this looks terrible on Yonex. Most these contracts are about brand awareness, making people want to use your brand. As a club player myself when I last bought my racket I basically chose a Babolat just because of the hype behind them (how they give you both power and control). This looks bad on Yonex, anyone who sees this story (which is now being told on BBC in front of millions of viewers, and probably will be again tomorrow before the match vs Robson, and then again before her match at Wimbledon), why would they choose a Yonex racket? They wouldn't.

In the article posted by CWTennis, it's basically saying Caroline has to lose early at Wimbledon, or Yonex are embarrassed, it will make it look like it is all their fault for Caroline slumping. If Caroline gets past around the second round at Wimbledon it will look really bad on Yonex.

That doesn't make any sense, and given the source sounds very questionable. Firstly Caro admits she is using a different racket while things get sorted with Yonex. Secondly why on earth would you black out a Yonex racket, prototype or not?

There's no way she's playing with a Yonex. They would want Yonex on the racket.
But that tweet shows how crazy this all can get.
Very bad for Yonex. They look like part of the problem

They didn't respond when I quizzed why though. I think the strings can mislead you, because I have a Babolat AeroPro Drive, but the strings are what instantly stand out and can mislead you, Caroline is using custom strings so it is tough to tell.

AEGON INTERNATIONAL

June 18, 2013

Caroline Wozniacki

EASTBOURNE, ENGLAND

C. WOZNIACKI/T. Paszek
6‑2, 2‑2 [Ret.]

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Potentially a difficult match for you, but it worked out in the end?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah. You know, everyone here is one of the top women in the world. It's such a tough draw. But Paszek, I lost to her last year at Wimbledon after having match points. I knew it wasn't going to be easy.
You know, I think I played a really good first set. I felt really good and comfortable out there. You know, it was unfortunate that she got an injury and had to retire in the second one.

Q. How is your confidence at the moment? It's fair to say you haven't had the best run of results recently?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, but I'm feeling great. I love the grass. It's so much fun to play on. The clay season is over, which I'm happy about. (Smiling.)

Q. How long have you been able to practice on the court, and how are you feeling on it right now?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Actually, we were supposed to come on Tuesday before the tournament, but the French were striking in the airport, so I got here on Friday morning and then got a few days of practice.
It was actually enough. I felt really comfortable out there today.

Q. Is it just a matter of doing like drills, whether it's movement or things like that, or have you been able to play out sets or points?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, playing ‑‑first it's just about getting the rhythm because it's much different to play on, but then it's just getting the movement, getting some points in, and, you know, really feel how it is.

Q. What went wrong during the clay season?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Um, you know, obviously a few things, but, you know, some of it was tactical. Some of it was just not making the right decisions on the clay. Sometimes you expect a different ball, especially when you play on hard court or grass, and you just don't get that ball on clay. So, you know, I think that just was probably the main problem for me.

Q. Your father was talking about how there might be some changes within your immediate team with coaching or physio, I don't know, but has there been any more talk or movement on that front since the French?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Not right now, no. You know, I'm feeling comfortable with the team I have around me at the moment, and we will just have to see what really happens. Yeah.

Q. Rory is here. Is he jet lagged? Did he manage to stay awake for the match?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: He always stays awake for the match. But he actually just went back to the hotel for a little nap. I think arriving at 6:00 in the morning or getting to the airport at 6:00, it's taking its toll. So better he gets like a two‑and‑a‑half‑hour nap now, and then he can stay awake until evening.

Q. Have you told him off for bending his club?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I... Next question? (Laughter.)

Q. It looked like today you were playing with maybe a different racquet. Are you trying out different equipment or are my eyes bad?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I'm just tinkering a little bit with my racquet. I'm still under contract with Yonex, so we're just trying to figure out, you know, a racquet that can help me a little bit more with my game.

Q. What are you looking for, like control or power?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I'm looking for a little bit more ‑‑a little bit more power but at the same time a little bit more control at the same time so that, you know, maybe get a bit more spin on the ball so when you put the power in that the ball spins.

Q. Is that as a result of the last few months?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: No, like we have always been tinkering a little bit with it, but I just felt like that, yeah, now I just feel like I needed a little bit more power and the racquet a little bit more will help.

Q. Have you been using the same strings for the last couple years?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, I have used the same strings for like five years, I think.

Q. And what are they?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I always just call it red string and natural gut. I'm actually not sure what else it's called.

Q. I think you could play Laura in the next round?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Okay, yeah, that's true.

Q. Obviously you just played her in France. How would you see that matchup on grass?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Obviously it's a different match, you know. I'm sure she likes the grass better than the clay.
She can serve very well, and she's going for it from the first ball. So definitely, you know, it would be a different matchup.

Re: Articles and Interviews

^^ The saddest thing is, without a slam, a tennis player is regarded as 'nothing'. A career not worth having. A largely media created point of view, which has been adopted by tennis fan (notably eaten raw by fans of players, who has won slams).

Same media btw, which also elevate 'reality tv stars' to uber celebrities and God and Goddess like status. Go figure

Re: Articles and Interviews

Without a slam title, you havent won any of the biggest tournaments during the years you played.
Being #1 is one success, winning the biggest tournaments is another.
Truly great players want to win a lot of majors, like Serena or Federer, Nadal.
But for a young #1, winning a major shouldnt be treated as the main goal. Being the best player you can possibly be should be the goal

Caroline Wozniacki

EASTBOURNE, ENGLAND

C. WOZNIACKI/L. Robson
6‑4, 6‑4

Quote:
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How much of a different game was it today compared to your meeting at the French?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, it's obviously a much different game because it's on grass. It's a faster surface. Laura has a very powerful game. She has a good serve.
For me it was just important to serve well myself and try to get as many returns in deep as possible and try to move her. You know, it was ‑‑I thought it was a very good game. I'm happy to be here as the winner of it.

Q. Obviously you have been sort of that teenager coming up and you know how hard it is. Where do you think her game is right now?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, I think she's playing very well. You know, I think she proved that today, as well.
She has a powerful game. She's left‑handed, which also I think is an advantage because, you know, the ball goes a little bit of different spin, has a different spin.
You know, it's very difficult for me to say, you know, how is her game compared to mine at the same time, you know.
She's definitely improving all the time, and she's beaten top players before. I'm very sure we are going to see much more of her in the future.

Q. Looking forward to next week, do you see Laura as more of a challenge on grass? She played better against you today than she did last month?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, grass is definitely a different surface and it's faster, so I think it suits her game more.

Q. Would you say it was comfortable for you today in terms of the victory?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I don't think it was very comfortable. When it's comfortable it's like lying on the couch and just seeing the games go past.
You know, I really had to fight out there, and, you know, I really had to keep focus on my own service games.
I got that one break in the first set, which was great. You know, the second set I broke her early. She broke me back straightaway. It was really important for me to keep my focus, and, you know, and we had some quite tight games. Then, you know, it turned out to be in my favor.

Q. Just a case of winning those games at the right time obviously, because it was 4‑All in both sets and then you went and broke?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, exactly. That was very important.

Q. Do you find it difficult to find against home crowds? Obviously there was a lot of support for Laura?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, she obviously had a lot of support. But for me I also felt like the crowd was supporting me a little bit. It's nice to have played here so many years, so I think, you know, people maybe have a little bit of a soft spot as well for me.
It was just a nice atmosphere out there, because it was, you know, a packed crowd. That's what I enjoy doing.

Q. You face Katarina Makarova tomorrow. How do you approach that?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I have played her many ‑‑I don't know how many times. I think I played her on grass. I think I played her here a few years back.
She really likes the grass. I think that's her favorite surface, as well. She plays flat, takes the ball early. A lefty, again. So we'll just have to wait and see.

Q. And also it's the WTA's 40th anniversary this year. What are your whole thoughts on the celebration?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I think it's great. You know, 40 years of the WTA is amazing, you know, to have Billie Jean King and that generation, you know, risking their careers to, you know, starting this, what do you call it, tour, organization, you know, and because of them we're able to live our dream, you know.
I think that's amazing, and it's something we are very thankful for.

Q. That's something that's echoed throughout the locker room, is it?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, for sure.
