Re: Caroline's Ranking Breakdown

Even though Caro has equaled her Madrid result from last year while Bartoli was knocked out a round earlier than last year, Bartoli will pass Caro in the rankings if she loses against Serena! I assume it's because Madrid/Rome was played a week earlier last year, so Caro stands to lose her Rome SF points after this week. And if this tournament ends with e.g. Li beating Serena in the final, Caro is in real danger of being pushed out of top 8 before FO!

^ while I'm sure it will be used in GM, by Ekstra Bladet and BT as evidence of Caroline's epic fall, being #6 or #7 or #8 for that matter, matters not. As you know of course

I know, you know and I know, you know, I know .. I just wanted to say it anyway

Re: Caroline's Ranking Breakdown

She can get back to at or near the top but I do think that falling from number one to (possibly) outside the top ten in less than six months is a significant setback that needs to be acknowledged as such. We will just have to wait and see if that happens or not. She can stop her slide with good results at Roland Garros and/or Wimbledon plus she has virtually nothing to defend in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Re: Caroline's Ranking Breakdown

She'd have to have a huge downfall to fall out of the top 10. And in case she does, she can still bounce back as she doesn't have to defend many points at Rome and RG. The players above her are also not doing that great, just look what happened to Kvitova. If she doesn't do well in Rome and RG there's a chance that Caro and Stosur will overtake her.

Yes, whether she's #6, 7 or 8 doesn't matter all that much but #9 is a different matter. As the 9th seed she can face a higher seed already in R16 at FO. I'd rather have her play maybe Petkovic or Zvonareva in R16 instead of Stosur or Li.

Re: Caroline's Ranking Breakdown

But its true that she had a big fall. So I dont see anything wrong in reporting it.
This is the #1 player of 2010 & 2011 who was holding 9 titles last summer.
Now she hasnt won a title in 9 months and her only SF win in that whole 9 months is against Martic in an Int'l.

That doesnt mean she will never be back in a slam final, or back at #1.
But to me, its only being honest to say she's regressed. She lost to Safarova, Goerges, Ivanovic and Kerber in Premiers this year. With no Premier final appearance.

I dont know whats going to happen. Just watching Jankovic & Ivanovic, I dont underestimate how hard it is to get back into the very elite

Re: Caroline's Ranking Breakdown

Caro is still the youngest player in top 10. Actually, Pavlyuchenkova ranked 25 is the younger player closest to her in the rankings.
Can anyone remember when was the last time Caro had a younger player ranked ahead of her? I think it might have been in August 2006 when Ula Radwanska was ranked slightly better. If I'm correct, it's been almost 6 years since Caro has had a younger player ranked ahead of her! That's not a bad record.

Caro was ranked behind Tamira Paszek until february 25, 2008 after Doha finished. She was ranked ahead of Paszek for one week before it switched back the next week. Caro passed Paszek again in the rankings after Miami 2008 and has stayed ahead of her since then.

Ok, I didn't remember Paszek was ranked so high at age 15-17. Maybe it's because she's actually ranked lower now than when she was 16 (in July 2007 she was ranked 35!) that you tend to forget what a promising teenager she was.

Caro is 12th in points per tournament played among the YEC race top 50 after the French Open. For comparison, Caro was 5th in points per tournament played among the top 50 last year, 4 below her year end ranking of 1. The Wta includes 0 point results in the rankings so I excluded the 0 point results to come up with points per tournament played.

I'll probably look into doing a weighted average of points per tournament at some point. If someone else wants to do that, feel free to do so.

Caro's 16th best result in her "best 16" ranking is 60 points, so Caro has to earn more than that at non-mandatory tournaments in order to increase her ranking points. Results at mandatory tournaments are stuck in Caro's ranking until she plays that tournament again next year.

Caro has won 66.7% (22-11) of her matches in 2012 as of the end of the French Open.

Caro is 18th in winning % for the year for players ranked inside the top 100 based on Wta level events only. She is 15th if you count only players ranked inside the top 50.

(I corrected the Wta win/loss rankings document that came out after the French Open to be based on winning % as the rankings were sometimes not ordered that way in the original file.)

Code:
