Re: Caroline Wozniacki - Video Thread

After watching the above video I think I know how Caroline can "fix" her forehand. On her backhand shots she makes a little "unh-huh" noise but she is silent when she hits forehand shots. Adding the "unh-huh" noise to the forehand will surely solve the problem.

Re: Caroline Wozniacki - Video Thread

She says she didn't know she had to play Serena. Really, what is it with tennis players and all this "I didn't look at the draw" nonsense? I'm convinced that within five minutes after the draw comes out EVERY player has had a look to see who has to play who and when.

Yup, I think that's childish as well. I really wonder why they all pretend that they don't care, it's not even possible to avoid knowing it, unless they talk to absolutely nobody during the tournament.

I guess they want to appear humble or show that they think from match to match but still, it's just a silly thing to pretend. But given that all players are doing it (even Serena pretended she didn't know that Sharapova was on the other side of the draw at the Olympics..come on!) I guess it's some pro tennis player codex thing they have to follow

I also think that those claims are not true. They definitely must be checking at least if Serena is in their part of the draw.

Not at all, Its actually highly counter productive in sport to consider either the outcome of the next match or the draw ahead. All it does is add pressure and foster doubts. The best situation is to be oblivious in a bubble until the tactics briefing, and then only focus on your game plan. That's sports psychology 101, so i'm surprised you all didn't know this.

I totally agree with you. I am sure that the vast majority of players seek at least to know who they'll meet in their early rounds. I always wonder why they just don't admit it. Not only I don't believe them, but I would find them unprofessional otherwise. They should look at who will be their next opponent, in order to adequately prepare to meet her. Besides, it is not uncommon to find a player in the stands while her next opponent is playing. The player in the stands is often accompanied by her coach and they're obviously preparing her next match.

Yeah certainly one match at a time is pretty essential and drilled into the players thinking so I can understand a player (and her team) also deciding that looking at the draw is a distraction and deciding not to look at the draw. It's probably OK to look at the draw but thinking about it can only be a distraction so you wouldn't want a player to dwell on it.

JJ used to give really funny interviews and would start taking over asking the questions to the reporters when she used to be asked about her next opponent and on who it was.

But also - the lack of any plausible explanation given as to why players should say they don't look at the draw if they do. I mean so long as they do think one match at a time - it really doesn't matter if they say they look at the draw or they don't. So why say they don't unless they genuinely don't.

And I'm not sure what the reasoning is that they do look at the draw contrary to what they say other than we are very interested in the draw. But we are not the players. We also give predictions what round she should make, dismiss who is easy and should be no trouble etc. which would be the last thing any player would do.

Players would have to be in quarantine to make them not knowing about the draw even possible.

Easier than you think, both physically and mentally. Mental quarantine being the most important, and It's not just athletes that practice such techniques to clear and focus the mind and working in deep submersion to achieve world class results.

Just think of everyday things you do without even thinking about them (breathing, walking, talking, ignoring environmental noises, the fact you might be ugly, have a beer belly), and then contemplate forcefully thinking about all of them as you go about your day, and see where that gets you.

You can apply this to every aspect of sport from your strokes, foot movement, and the ideal situation is they become invisible and instinctive leaving you free to focus on what is important like strategy... Call it a form of self induced focus and denial if you will. Eliminate all distractions that slow you down, clutter your mind, or add pressure. Your next match is just another match, because if you acknowledge its a final you have probably already lost.

Re: Caroline Wozniacki - Video Thread

So, I assume than that Sharapova probably checked the draw at the Olympics because she showed quite a few signs of what you're describing.
