Will the Czechs be the new Russians???

Just wondering..........we had the Belgians taking over, then the Russians and then the Serbians. Will it be the Czechs that will be the new big names in tennis.

Just look at the French Open - we had Cetkovska, Kvitova into the fourth round, and Iveta qualifying.

All the Czechs have been playing really well:

Cetkovska: 2 x $50k ITF titles and a Fes QF,

Kvitova (the youngest at 18) : 75k at Monzon, win over Venus Williams, qualified for Memphis, Paris and Miami

Bensova - resurgence from her this year; qualified for Roland Garros, final of Estoril, 50k winner and 75k runner-up

Plus we have successus of Koukalova, Safarova and Vaidisova.

Looks like Czech tennis is really looking up!

Re: Will the Czechs be the new Russians???

There are certainly more Czechs coming up, but their 2 best players, Vaidisova and Safarova, are slumping right now. I would love to see Czech Republic/Russia Fed Cup battle though-with Sharapova/Kuznetsova/Chakvetadze/Dementieva vs. an in form Vaidisova/Safarova/Kvitova/Benesova.

Re: Will the Czechs be the new Russians???

Czech tennis would quite awesome, if Vaidisova and Safarova can start playing the tennis they are capable of again.

However, they are no where near the Russians.

Re: Will the Czechs be the new Russians???

See my sig

Actually the Czechs came before but fizzled in the wake of the Russians. No one seemed to be coming up after Nicole and Lucie--now we see Petra K. and the comebacks in Klara, Iveta, Petra C., Renata and Barbora. Be on the lookout for the identical twin Pliskova sisters, especially Karolina--she may be the next, new new thing.

Re: Will the Czechs be the new Russians???

Vaidisova and Safarova are in terrible form.
Cetkovska is a good challenger player who is enjoying some great form.
Benesova and Zakopalova have been around for ages. At their best they are top 40 talent, but I can't see either in the top 20.
Kvitova might make it to the top 20 at some point, but she really needs to develop her game to become something really special.

Basically, no, Czech tennis is waaaayyyy behind Russian tennis.

Czech tennis has always been strong though...

Re: Will the Czechs be the new Russians???

Vaidisova and Safarova are slumping.
Klara is hanging around #50.
Iveta and Petra are in red hot form but they are 25 and 23. Not teenagers anymore.
Kvitova has one big result every month. The best prospect.

Then, there is a bucnh of players betwwen # 100 and 500.

The Olympic Race is interesting.

Right now, Nicole, Lucie, Iveta and Klara are going. However, Cetkovska and Kvitova can both make it if they win their 4th round match.

What makes Russia special isn't that they have a couple of players in the top 5 but that they have depth and players all over the place thoughout the top 100.

A lot of the Czech player are having very good years and there are a couple of young ones emerging. Yes Vaidisova and Safarova aren't having good years but despite this the Czechs now have great depth in the top 60.

As for Serbia, as great as Jankovic and Ivanovic are, and they are both very special players, Serbia does not have any depth at all. Beside those two there really isn't anyone else. So i would definately not say Serbia is the new Russia. A better comparison would be to call them the new Belgium.

Vakulenko? Vakulenko is Ukrainian, she has been been living in Spain for about 10 years. Why she should be playing for Serbia?

Eraković was born in Croatia, and at the age of 2 (two) was taken by her parents, who may have been ethnic Serbs (I don't know), to New Zealand. Equally well one might expect Woźniacki or Woźniak to represent Poland (their first language being Polish). And by the way, Eraković only recently became top 100 player.

Dokić was good in the past and it is to be seen whether she can stage a successful comeback (I personally doubt that).

Chris is right in his analysis. Russia is absolutely unique in how many players it has in every ranking section. Czechs and Slovaks are also impressive especially when one takes into account the size of both countries.

Vakulenko was live in Serbia many years and she was be a Serbian national champon, 2000.Serbia has democratci changing and situacion isn't good...so mother of Julia moved with Julia in Spain...but Julia has Serbian/Ukraine citzenship...now she doesn't has Serbian Citzenship...has only Ukraine and Spaines
