Australian Crowds

Not sure if this is the correct place for this thread, however, wanted to draw everyone's attention to several comments raised in the general messages section. Our crowds have been accused by some posters of being racist and unruly! Many of these comments have arisen as a result of the support for Robson over Sloane Stephens!
I am sure that almost all the players would commend our crowds for sportsmanlike behaviour and for our tennis knowledge.

In the Robson Stephens match it was mainly Brits and Americans

For some reason a lot of Australians want to class Laura as an Aussie because she was born here and lived here for 18 months. You don't see the Germans claim Tomic as theirs. That's why they were supporting Laura.

There might have been the odd racist idiot in the crowd - they're everywhere, not just Australia. Saw it in Brisbane with 1 person talking with their friends saying horrible things about Stephens (which I won't repeat here) in her match with Cibulkova.

The Open is so commercialised now that it doesn't neccessarily attract tennis fans and people that appreciate that it is a global sport. I detest the country vs country mentality that the Open has to put up with every year. Admittedly it hasn't been as bad as previous years when police had to use capsicum spray on Margaret Court Arena one year.

As for GM, the bile that comes out of that forum far excedes what happened in Robson vs Stephens Im sure.

Most of us are, yes. But there are the occasional groups of dickheads.

Sadly, they're the ones that get the airtime.

Re: Australian Crowds

Just for the record both Sloane and Laura said in their press that their families are friends as they trained together in Floridia as juniors. The girls had no input to who the crowd supported. On the replay I did hear "USA USA" as well as "I love you Laura". It sounded pretty good fun to me!

Re: Australian Crowds

I attended the match. There were a lot of English supporters in the crowd. You'd be surprised at the amount of foreign visitors at the AO given it's distance from everywhere else as well as the dollar.

Re: Australian Crowds

I was at Robson vs Oudin and it was 90% for Laura as well. There were a few pockets of English supporters.

Re: Australian Crowds

When the Aussies are done and out the draw, its time for "Aussie Kim" and "Aussie Anna" etc to be claimed... chuckle. Lots of us come from mixed ancestry (mullato, metis, melange, creole, etc) coming to Oz with nothing, speaking with accents, starting at the bottom where all good migrants go. People call you names but you just have to grow a thick skin and learn the Aussie one finger salute and lingo which goes something like bite me !
