Congrats Taiwan.

This being on clay doesn't help the other Asians too much apart from Su-Wei who loves the surface.

What a joke that Montinee Tangphong is getting the wildcard into Pattaya.

Chinese Taipei Girls Fight off strong challenge from Colombia

Wednesday 18th October 2001

Day 2 provided some nail-biting doubles matches when a number of seeded teams found themselves level at 1-1 with their opponents following the singles rubbers.

Romy Farah caused the upset of the competition so far with a 61 64 win over Chinese Taipei's No.1 Su Wei Hsieh. Ranked No. 17 in the ITF Junior World Rankings, Hsieh must have been expecting to clinch the match after Chia-Jung Chuang had earlier defeated Maryori Franco 64 61. Farah, the Colombian No.1, played an outstanding match to win and level the match at 1-1. In the deciding doubles, however, Chinese Taipei, the No.3 seed, got themselves back on track winning the doubles 64 61 to clinch the tie 2-1.

One of the most exciting matches of the day came between Argentina girls, the No.8 seed, and Canada girls. Micaela Moran gave Argentina an early lead defeating Melanie Gloria 63 63. Canada then levelled, with Beier Ko handing Argentinean No.1 Mariana Esperon a heavy 61 61 defeat. Once again result of the match hinged on the deciding doubles. Canada started well, taking the first set 62. Argentina looked like being the first seed to lose a match when the second set went to a tie break, but Esperon and Maria-Carla Zabaleta dug deep and took the tie break to level at one set all. In the third and deciding set, Argentina were the first to get the vital break and Mariana Esperon was left to serve for the match at 5-4. The Argentinean No.1 held her nerve and served well, thus securing the rubber 26 76(1) 64 and the match 2-1, much to the delight of their coach who said they had made him "suffer a lot" during the match.

In the girls' draw Germany, the No.5 seed, were tested by Korea, but eventually came through in the deciding doubles 63 64.

tough break for the Canadians, had no chance against the Czech team, but really should have gotten that doubles win over the Argentine team Shame Beier Ko didn't have Kaarina Zoricic to help her out on the squad, would helped their chances far more.

Cinq i know they're going to be tough.

Viraq is in top 10 juniors ranks.

We've got our C string team here.
Kuznetsova , Bastrikova , Safina & co would have won this with eyes closed.

A day for upsets in the boys' and girls' draw

Thursday 19 October 2001

Day 3 provided some excellent matches as the seeds met in the round robin stage of the tournament. With a number of upsets and a high standard of tennis on display, the spectators who came to watch were not disappointed.

Before the tournament began Hungary girls, seeded No.7, were being touted as a threat to the top seeds and today Zsuzsanna Babos and Virag Nemeth proved those predictions to be accurate. Matched up against Russia, the No.2 seed, the match had been eagerly awaited all week.

Hungary drew first blood, Zsuzsanna Babos beating Mariana Viliamovskaia in three sets 36 63 63 in a match that could have gone either way. In the third set both girls broke serve a number of times and at 3-2, with a break, it looked though Viliamovskaia's patience would prevail against Babos' ferocious hitting. However, the Hungarian held her nerve and broke back to level at 3-3 and then held and broke Viliamovskaia to lead 5-3. At deuce with the No-Ad system of scoring, the point was either match point or break point. Viliamovskaia's shot was long, thus giving Hungary the rubber and a lead in the match 1-0.

With Virag Nemeth, the Hungarian No.1, up next against Russian No.2, Vera Douchevina, it seemed that Hungary would wrap up the match 2-0, but Douchevina was not about to let Hungary have things all their own way. Despite losing the first set 4-6, the Russian came back strongly in the second, taking the set 62 and thus setting up a very tense third set. Both players pulled out all the stops in the third set, but it was Douchevina who got the vital break to take the set and the rubber 46 62 75.

From the first point of the doubles match it was clear that Nemeth was determined to make up for losing her singles match. The No.1 was extremely dominant throughout the match, and showed exactly why she has reached the top 10 girls' singles rankings, partnering Babos to a 61 62 win in the doubles and a 2-1 win over the No.2 seed, Russia.

Hungary was not the only team to cause an upset today. Poland saw off the No.3 seed Chinese Taipei 3-0, in a match which included the longest rubber of the day. In the second singles match, after making a great start, taking the first set 60 against Su-Wei Hsieh, Marta Domachowska lost the second set 46. The third set turned into a marathon that neither girl wanted to give up without a fight. The battle went on and on until Domachowska finally nudged ahead to win 10-8 in the third, thus giving Poland the match 2-0. Both girls recovered quickly from the singles in order to play a very close doubles, which Poland went on to win 76 (0) 64, wrapping up the match 3-0.

Croatia, the No.4 seed, was the other girls' seed to lose to lower seeded opponents. After the singles they were level 1-1 with Germany, the No.5 seed, but Germany outlasted Croatia in the doubles, winning 57 62 64 and securing the match 2-1.

Arghhhhhhhh so disappointed

Great win for Vera

Zsuzsanna Babos and Virag Nemeth, Hungary

Marina Viliamovskaia, Russia

Czech as I thought will now walk this event as they picked their best players.
