Ana did it--and quite easily! She beat Gehrlein 63 62. This is an impressive win from her.
In R2 she plays Mircic (SRB; #287, career-high #249). If Ana plays as well as she did today, this is winnable. Mircic is good but hasn't been all that strong lately. She even got bageled by Gehrlein last month, 06 67.
If Ana wins her next match, she'll be right on the cut-off into the top 300. Either way, this year has been a tremendous improvement for her (her 2007 season-end ranking was #678).
Next up, either 3rd seed Ondraskova or unseeded Martinovic. She played Martinovic once (never played Ondraskova), 2 years ago on clay in Zadar 10k, and won. In case of reaching semis, she'd jump to about 290, without it, she's around 300.
Amazing result for Ana. With this win, she'll move up to ~#290 (career-high and first time in top 300).
Orlova will be tough. She's ranked lower than Ana and is a qualifier but is having a great week. In R2 she destroyed the #8 seed Korzeniak 60 62. Regardless of what happens next, this tournament has already been a huge success for Ana.
I don't mean to put pressure on poor little Ana but at this point it looks like she's the player most likely to bring good news to fans of Croatian women's tennis in 2009!
