Re: Gb Girls

Nice report already on the LTA website

In the final rubber, Elena Baltacha and Mel South were looking to give the GB team the perfect end to day one of competition by securing victory over a strong Switzerland team of Emmanuelle Gagliardi and Patty Schnyder. After an even opening few games the Swiss pair started to show their class and, while often troubled by the British duo, took the first set 6-3. The second set was a similar story with Baltacha and South causing Gagliardi and Schnyder more problems before losing the set to the same score.

“The doubles was competitive and closer than the score suggested but in the end Gagliardi and Schnyder proved that they are a class pair.”

Nigel Sears, GB Fed Cup Captain

Earlier in the day, British number two Anne Keothavong got the GB team off to a fantastic start by beating the world number 126, Gagliardi, 6-1 6-4 with an impressive performance. Anne dominated throughout the match winning nine out of the first ten games before overcoming something of a revival by Gagliardi to take the match in straight sets.

“I felt that today was one of Anne’s best ever performances. Right from the start she attacked and played some brilliant tennis”.

Carl Maes, LTA Head of Women’s Tennis

In the second rubber, Katie O’Brien pushed the world number 14, Schnyder, all the way with a really strong performance. On paper this always looked like a tough match for the British number one but she showed the improvement she has made over the past few months and has clearly carried her form from the Australian Open into this week’s tournament. The British number one eventually lost 6-7(5) 5-7 having led 4-2 in the first set tie-break and 3-0 in the second set.

“Katie fought her socks off and created opportunities but unfortunately missed a couple of crucial finishes, particularly at 4-2 up in the tiebreak and 3 love up in the second set”.

Nigel Sears, GB Fed Cup Captain

Hungary tomorrow, good luck girls.

Re: Gb Girls

From LTA Website today

For the third tie in a row the GB team lost narrowly, 1-2, as their opponent’s number one player made the difference. It was another gutsy and spirited performance by the British girls who had to wait a long time to get on court to start the match. The tie, due to start at 4pm local time, did not get underway until 7.30pm after a controversial match between Serbia and Romania went to three sets in all three rubbers.

When play finally began, Anne Keothavong understandably took a while to find her rhythm and lost the first set 4-6 to Hanne-Skak Jensen. Keothavong, looking for her third successive victory and urged on by strong support from the GB bench, fought back to take the second set 6-4. She never looked back in the final set, taking it convincingly 6-2 to keep her unbeaten singles record in tact.

British number one Katie O’Brien played in the second singles against rising star

Caroline Wozniacki, ranked 45 in the world. The young Dane, Junior Wimbledon Champion in 2006, played some exceptional tennis in the first set to take it 6-2 and there didn’t look any way back for O’Brien. However, she showed the fight that has typified her three matches to raise her game and played her best set of the competition to take it 6-1 and level the tie at one rubber all. In the final set, Wozniacki, under significant pressure from O’Brien showed her class to take her game up a level and win the set 6-2.

LTA Head of Women’s Tennis, Carl Maes, thought both O’Brien and Keothavong should take encouragement from their performances throughout the tournament:

Anne and Katie have looked like top 100 players easily this week in all their matches and practice. Whilst not winning all of them, they have looked like winners.

Carl Maes, LTA Head of Women's Tennis

As with the ties against Switzerland and Hungary, it was all down to the final rubber and captain, Nigel Sears, decided to change the doubles line up. The in-form Keothavong took the place of Mel South to partner Elena Baltacha. The rubber did not get underway until after midnight and the Danish pair of Eva Dyrberg and Wozniacki adapted better to the situation. The Danes were in control throughout with the British duo unable to find any consistency in their game. The Fed Cup doubles experience of Dyrberg along with Wozniacki continued good form were too much for Baltacha and Keothavong and they lost the match 3-6 2-6 to give Denmark the victory at 1.20am.

The defeat leaves the Great Britain team with a relegation play-off against Portugal this afternoon, starting at 2pm UK time.

Earlier in the day there were dramatic scenes during an epic tie between the pre-tournament favourites, Serbia and Romania. Firstly, world No.2 Ana Ivanovic beat world No.150, Monica Niculescu before Jelena Jankovic lost her singles match against world No.112, Sorana Cirstea, both matches went to three sets. In the deciding match, Ivanovic and Jankovic played against Niculescu and Cirstea and the tense atmosphere erupted when the Serbian pair had a break point at 4-3 in the second set. A representative from the Romanian team approached the chair umpire and a fight broke out with Romanian legend Ile Nastase and former Wimbledon semi-finalist Slobodan Zivojinovic in the centre of the action. It took some time (and some strong armed tactics from the Hungarian security to restore order) with the Serbian duo eventually winning 2-6, 7-6, 7-6.
