I think it's time to revert the non-tennis talk back to here...
Well, in the current championship "cup" (KO) format - yes, I can see that happening again. Would have happened in 2007 too if not for Sammy Bachar and the other Jerusalem players being so gutless.
I doubt they would lose a best of 5 series - certainly not to Ashkelon (still can't believe they managed to lose the first game at Nokia), but not to any other team this year - the level of play has just dropped compared to the last few season.
Last year, maybe they would've lost a series, we'll never know.
BTW, how stupid is that to have the QF as a best of 5 series, then the SF and the Final as a best of 1?
The Euroleague doing more or less the same just further proves my point

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
A once in a lifetime opportunity for Roger to complete the career slam and equal Sampras 14
Who would've imagined Nadal losing to Soderling (and to a lesser extent Murray and Djokovic also thoroughly beaten by lesser opposition).

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
Today was the first full day of tennis I was able to see, and what a day it was
Great comeback from Gonzalez, and an even greater one given the circumstances from Soderling
The second semi was scary Del Potro looked unbreakable during the first 3 sets, Roger wasn't even close, but after the 2 hour mark, the 1st serve % suddenly dropped, and Roger raised his game and despite a commendable last effort from his young opponent (amazing game to break back to 3 all in the 5th) looked in control from that point on.
Two great matches, drama, tension, winners, everything.
The final will not be easy. We all know who was already ousted by the Swede. But there will never be a better chance than this.

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
I totally agree with your post about SF matches.
I must say that the last past 2 years, I really wasn't too much of pro Roger. But now, if there is any justice, Roger should win RG. It's his last chance, and he deserves fully to go down in history has the best player ever

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
Roger won!
I'm so happy for him, what an amazing achivements!
Do you think its realistic to ask him for more slams? Or now that he has broken the records and made history, he will be fed up and he will slowly fade out of the game? I certaintly hope its the former, men tennis is nothing for me without him and david, and david may as well have been in retirement in the last several months

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
I think he will win 2-3 more (not at the French though ).
At the moment, I still think he's the 2nd best player ever, behind Laver, who would've 18-20 if he was allowed to play at the peak of his career (5 years!), and had done twice in a year what only two players have done since in a career.

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
Wow, just wow
I'm really lacking superlatives to describe the performance of the Davis team today. [Too bad my working schedule only enabled me to watch at home...]
Biggest win for Harel since 2001. Finally consistent throughout when it counts.
Dudi - what more can be said? He was sublime in the 2nd and especially the 3rd, it looked like he was hypnotizing the ball or something. Nobody short of the top 4 would have stopped him playing at this level. And the 4th - I'm not an optimist, but wasn't worried for a second when he was 0-3 down. He has given Youzhny this break from *40-15 with his only momentary lapse of the match, but outplayed him on every phase of the game, and breaking back was never in doubt.
Andyoni, finish the job.

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
I guess the question was for both of us - sadly, no.
But it doesn't make me feel any less happier.
Usually I don't like to summarize a year in July, but for me, that closes the question about Israeli Sportsperson(s) of the year, which for the second year running, belongs IMO to our male tennis players (last year it was Andyoni over Shahar Zubari).
BTW I know this is a tennis forum and all but an amazing achievement, which is another Israeli first, by the greatest athletics talent that has ever grown here (Averbukh came to Israel aged 21): Dmitriy Kroyter won the Cadets (U-17 - most competitors were a year older than him) World Championship in High Jump, clearing 2.20.
Remember the name, he's our best future hope for an Olympic medal outside of surfing and judo (or I could be mean and say in a sport that someone actually watches ).

I think I've read somewhere that he came to Israel a few years ago, so he's not that different from Averbukh.
Regarding the Davis tie, Harel deserves the most compliments. Chapeau to the others of course, especially for an amazing match to Dudi.

Re: Chat thread for Shahar fans
Yes he is. There's a huge difference between "importing" a 12-13 y.o. talent and a 21-22 y.o. grown athlete.
I'd like to make a tennis equivalent, but there's Anna and no one to compare her to, since Linetskaya barely played here. But for argument's sake, let take Rusedski (that's the first example that came into my mind). Is he a product of British Tennis system? Hell no.

Nice to see you back here. How many times have you been to Israel? Do you have family here?
As for Anna, there was a talk about her starting to coach, and specifically it has been said that she'll coach Astrugo, but I haven't heard any follow up on that in months. Also she was evidently absent in the Davis tie.
P.S. Why did you start a new user?
