Tennis birthdays – Dec. 7, 2011Posted on Dec 7, 2011
Urszula Radwanska (POL), 21

It’s not easy being the younger sister of a top-10 player, as Urszula is finding out, in the shadow of big sister Agnieszka.

She had a standout junior career – ranked No. 1 after the junior U.S. Open in 2007, where she lost in the final to Kristina Kucova. But Radwanska won junior Wimbledon that summer, and the Gerry Weber Open as a tuneup. She got to the semis at junior Wimbledon the previous year, losing to someone named … Caroline Wozniacki 8-6 in the third set.

To put it in perspective, Wozniacki was one of the few players she was facing and competing with during her junior career to break through on the big girls’ tour; the only other big name was Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, whom she defeated at Wimbledon in the quarters in 2007. Radwanska also beat Sorana Cirstea in the final of the Eddie Herr (this year’ edition is being played this week) in 2006 and the second round of that 2007 Wimbledon.

She also came one match short of winning the junior Grand Slam in doubles in 2007 (with three different partners). The one match missing was the Australian Open final. With Cirstea, she took the Orange Bowl doubles in 2006, defeating Canadian Sharon Fichman and her Czech partner in the final.

The women’s game is no longer a teenagers’ game. But Radwanska got off to a pretty good start.

On the WTA Tour, Radwanska got to No. 62 in Aug. 2009 (ending the season at No. 66), and No. 74 in doubles a month later.

She’s currently ranked No. 107 after starting the season at No. 191. And that’s because injuries hit and she’s crawling her way back. She missed half of 2010 with a back injury, and her ranking had dropped to No. 339 by the U.S. Open.

Radwanska is just a wee bit more excitable than her big sister (whose most dramatic expression on court is about at the level of smelling a slightly unpleasant odor). It most often works against her.

Re: ULA RADWAŃSKA cheering thread

Nowy trener Urszuli.

Przeszedł więc twardą szkołę życia - mówi w "Polsce The Times" Robert Radwański. Dokić słynęła z kapryśnego charakteru, a jej ojciec Damir z porywczości, przesiedział też prawie rok w więzieniu za groźby podpalenia ambasady australijskiej w Belgradzie.

So far as I know Borna Bikic with his brother was responsible for Karolina Sprem total falling
and his achievements with Dokic are, to say the least, discutable

Stanford R1: Ula vs. Daniilidou

R2 vs Erakovic or Jurikova.

I think Ula can get to the final here.

Urszula Radwanska: Will She Join Big Sister Agnieszka in the WTA Top 20 in 2013?
By
Van Sias

Another player with the last name Radwanska is making big gains on the WTA Tour.

It's just taken her a little longer to do so.

Twenty-one-year-old Urszula Radwanska, a professional since 2005, has finally cracked the top 40 of the women's rankings. That's a far cry from the pace set by her slightly older sister Agnieszka, who currently sits at No. 3 in the world, having reached a high of No. 2 in 2012.

Urszula, like her sister, was a highly accomplished junior player. She won the junior title at Wimbledon in 2007 and three Grand Slam doubles titles that same year at that level. Big things were expected for her upon turning pro, but it took her a few years to make her debut in the top 100.

Shortly after that, injuries hit—and hit hard.

Radwanska missed most of 2010 with a back injury, which sent her ranking plummeting. In '11, though, she started to regain some momentum, but the year was still filled with some setbacks, including falling in qualifying rounds of tournaments a number of times.

This year has been a far different story so far. Over the course of the past few months, Radwanska has been one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour. The run started in earnest during the grass-court season, when she won her first ITF title in two years in Nottingham, England, defeating CoCo Vandeweghe in the finals.

A couple of weeks later, she made her first career WTA Tour singles final, falling to Nadia Petrova in the finals of the Wimbledon warmup in 'S-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands.

Over the summer hard-court swing, Radwanska made two quarterfinals, and post-U.S. Open, has made back-to-back semifinals, having just fallen at that stage at this week's tournament in Guangzhou, China.

There's still plenty of tennis left in 2012 and at this rate, Radwanska can find herself knocking on the doors of the top 20.

By 2013, she should be ready to join Agnieszka Radwanska there.

It's just taken Urszula a little longer to do so.
