Coach Van Harpen sees Kirilenko in Top 10 next year !

Courting success

Dubai: For the moment, there seem to be just two people who believe that Maria Kirilenko can be among the top 10 players in the swaying world of women's tennis. One of them is her coach Eric Van Harpen and the other is Kirilenko herself.

"I came to Dubai with a purpose, and that was to win this tournament," Kirilenko told Gulf News after her straight sets win against fellow Russian Evgeniya Rodina in last week's final of the ninth Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa.

There is no gainsaying as to what a win can do to boost the confidence of a player. But more important is the will and thirst to continue the winning streak as the petite Russian satisfyingly kick-started her preparations for the upcoming season.

"I have always believed in my ability as a player. I have played some solid tennis and that I why I am where I am supposed to be in the rankings. And that is also the reason why I win," Kirilenko said.

Last triumph

Her last triumph came exactly three months ago when she tamed another Russian - Maria Koryttseva 6-0, 6-2 to take home her first trophy for 2007 at the Sunfeast Open held in Kolkata, India.

She kept up her good work, reaching the final of the Hansol Korea Open the very next week, before falling to former world No 1 Venus Williams in a three-set final.

After this came a slump that saw her suffer four consecutive first round crashes at the AIG Japan Open, Kremlin Cup, Zurich Open and the Generali Ladies Linz Open.

"This sort of fluctuation in form is normal for any player on the Tour. But the main thing is to have the belief and the conviction that things can be better at the next tournament," Kirilenko said.

It is this confidence level that both she and her coach have firmly believed in. To his credit, Van Harpen has coached several top stars of yesteryear, including the pugnacious Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and the gutsy Patty Schneider.

"But with due respect to all of them, Maria stands out as the best listener. She is so eager to listen to what I have to say to her after each match, after every training session, at any time, on or off the court," Van Harpen said.

Good student

"These are the signs of a good student. The coach can be the best, but ultimately it is the player who has to deliver on the court. Winning is an attitude and it can be pretty contagious. I am confident she can keep this winning touch going into the new season," the coach said.

The coach and his pupil returned to their Valencia base to continue their preparations for the new season.

This includes rigorous physical conditioning, an early departure for Down Under to tune up for the Australian Open.

"She has the appetite for playing big games and she has the ability to push her way right through to the top 10 on the WTA Tour," he noted.

"She has made a start here, and I am confident that she will keep climbing steadily up the rankings in the next few weeks. I can only see her progressing through this year, unless of course, there is some sort of injury," Van Harpen added.

This is definitely encouraging words coming from Makiri and her coach Van Harpen. It sounds like she's poised, determined, and focused on the 2008 season. She's eager to listen what her coach is telling her and she's putting that knowledge to good use on the court training hard. Reaching the Top 10 is a lofty goal next year. She will definitely have to show she can beat the other Elite players on the tour, go deep in the Slams and Tier I & II events, plus avoiding early round exits. Hopefully, she will win some titles next year. Keep training hard Makiri! Like coach Van Harpen said, "Winning is an attitude and it can be pretty contagious."

I think if Makiri stays healthy in 2008 she has an outside chance to make the top 10. Maria needs to get off to a good start the first 3 months of the year because I can't see her playing well during the clay court season since she struggles alot on clay. After Roland Garros is where Masha will need to play alot of good tennis in order to make a serious run at the top 10 in 2008. But she has a good coach in Eric Van Harpen. I also hope she plays a smart schedule and avoids playing too much in 2008.

I hope Maria does make it to the Top 10. She needs to be a lot more consistent to do so and like cat says she also has to be smarter with her schedule. Maria has had far too many early exits in tournaments the past few years. To make the Top 10, she will have to get deep into tournaments. After the French Open last year, she had a hard time stringing wins together. The good news is that this started to change when Van Harpen became her coach. Hopefully, he'll be able to get Maria to use her talent and realize her potential. A good place to start would to be finally make it out of the 3rd round of a Grand Slam

Re: Coach Van Harpen sees Kirilenko in Top 10 next year !

She will have to play better than she did in Auckland. I saw all 3 matches on the live stream, and she was rooted to the baseline and not moving as well as she usually does. Maybe this knee injury acting up.

Maria is a slow starter anyway, so there's a long way to go and hopefully she will be up near the top 10 by the end of this season.

Re: Coach Van Harpen sees Kirilenko in Top 10 next year !

If Maria remains rooted on the baseline all year, she'll never make the top 10. She has to play aggresively and make things happen. Her best results have come when she has served & volleyed, returned & volleyed, used the slice backhand & came to net. Maria simply does not have enough power to get into rallies from the baseline with the top players.

I think that if she manages to break her '3rd round' hoodoo in at least one grand slam, she'll have a successful year.

coach doesn't do much if Maria has injury. Otherwise, tennis coach is only one of elements in staff where should be also psychologist. At least sportsman have to take an advice if he or she feels mental weakness.

Re: Coach Van Harpen sees Kirilenko in Top 10 next year !

I really think there may be a mental weakness there. Or if not, then the physical problems are really bad. You can't just fall apart in 3 matches like that, can you?

My guess is that Yuri is not a good mentor - or why would she have the problems. Van Harpen may be helping, but a really expert is probably what's needed. Hopefully Van Harpen will persuade them of this.

Re: Coach Van Harpen sees Kirilenko in Top 10 next year !

I would be happy if Maria made the top 20 this year. But the way she blows matches makes me think the top 10 is out of reach for her. And then there are the issues with her left knee and what role her knee injury or knee tendonitis plays in these losses. It's bad enough that Maria lacks mental toughness. But if she has knee problems the rest of her career I can't see how she can become the fine all court top 10 player I think she should be.

Someone could explain why a lot of girls reaches their biggest successes when they are teens? Maria is an example. When such teen improves physically there comes many different problems...

at the moment i don't think reaching the top 10 is possible for her
she needs to stop losing first round matches to rather unknown players
