I got in around 11am yesterday and watched a little bit of the Mirza/Dellacqua match. Casey was playing great, but unlike the last time I saw her, she didn't have that determined look on her face. Last time I saw her play, she looked so focused. When I sat down, Mirza was putting the puntuation on the 1st set. In the 2nd set Casey played well and really went for her shots. Mirza gave her the break by double faulting in the 1st game. From there, Casey played better than Sania. I think Casey was up *4-1 and decided to go for too many low % shots and it became *4-2. Also Casey decided to be sloppy with her 1st serves and next thing you knew it was *4-3 Dellacqua. She regrouped though (and was helped by UFE from Sania) to win the 2nd set. I shouted a couple "c'mon mates" to Casey and left right before the 3rd set; and judging by the scoreline Casey must've checked out too. Credit to her for keeping it close in the 3rd though
I walked the outside courts for a bit and saw Mike Russell playing some dude. He looks a lot like my boss
I settled in at a nearby court to watch Yuan duke it out with Wozniacki. Man! They had some really long rallies. It's then that i realized that Wozniacki and Wozniack are 2 different gals
Wozzy was looking great out there. Her shots had good depth and the pace kept Meng guessing. Meng showed some grit, but I'm guessing the Sugiyama match took more out of her than I thought. When I sat down, Wozzy was putting the finishing touches on the 1st set tiebreak. She wasn't even sweating, at least not as much as Meng. Meng was a mess. I left after a couple games in the 2nd set thinking the match could go either way. Looking at the scoreline, I'm guessing Meng ran out of steam.
Moving along, I watched the 1st set of the Radwanska/Koukalova match. I got some GREAT shots of Koukalova. She's very photogenic oncourt and off (even with my crappy camera skills lol). Now let me tell you about Ursa. This girl was a total mess. I had no idea the "bombshell" was so hard on herself on the courts. She was tossing and slamming her racquet on the court and verbally abusing (herself I hope) in her native language. Kookie remained cool and calm despite playing not so great. I left that match in the beginning of the 2nd set in fear Ursa might throw her racquet and it hit us in the stands
Surprised Kookie dropped a set to Raddy...
Next up was the much anticipated Venus/King match. I kind of danced around the courts for the other matches, but this one I sat in on from start to finish. In a nutshell, the 1st set was ALL Venus domination. Vania "Applecrumbpie" King got crushed
I'm guessing Vania was trying to get a feel for Venus' game maybe. If so, she got the feel of eating a 17 minute bagel
Venus was hitting winners from both wings (mostly the backhand), thumping serves, and coming into net. King was pinned to the baseline. The 2nd set was a combination of King coming out swinging and Venus taking her foot off the gas pedal. Vania started returning Venus' serve better and played deep shots to the corners. Her flat strokes caught Venus wrong-footed a couple times too. And although Vania played well in the 2nd set, I got the feeling that Venus relaxed a bit to give the fans (somewhat) of their money's worth
After the match, I took a video clip of Venus doing a little shuffle before signing autographs LOL. Funny stuff. I'll have to upload it sometimes.
After that, I went to one of the shaded courts to watch Pennetta playing Spears. I was standing next to Grandin who was saying, "C'mon Abby." I dunno about Grandy, but I got a predlez vibe from her. And she needed a good shower too
Pennetta played her game and didn't look pressured at all. "Abby" was a mess though. She must've swapped tips with Radwanska because she was verbally abusing herself throughout her match lol.
From there, I watched the middle and end of the Kostanic/Pin match. Pin was looking as cute as ever. But Jelena was a complete mess. Let me tell you about Kostanic. She played horrible and ought to be ashamed....REALLY. The only thing she had going for her was her forehand and that was lackluster in itself. He opted to use her 2handed solely for moonballing and 75% of the time hit that funky 2handed slice. I am not surprised she ended up munching on a breadstick and a bagel. Jelena was terrible. And of course, she was in keeping with yesterday's theme of, "let's play tennis while I verbally abuse myself to smitherines." She kept spouting off in her native tongue and nearly blew a gasket when she got a back call in the 2nd set
Pin hit a clean backhand DTL winner and Jelena said something about the ball being out in Croatian. She then engaged the chair umpire in a nice conversation that promptly ended with Jelena saying, "WTF!?!" I nearly fell out the stands laughing. Jelena then looked at Pin and Pin shook her head and said, "Looked good to me" in the cutest nonchalant French accent that i'm sure made Jelena even more
Also, Jelena's coach was trying to coach her from the stands, but after a while he just gave up on that. It obviously wasn't doing her any good
He just sat there and watched her be a loose cannon
After that bit of comical relief, I watched Verdasco steamroll Zverev and got some great shots in the process. On the next court over, Molik was damned near MURDERING some poor young girl. Alicia was impressive. Come to think of it, that's the court I should've been at. Bleh, the match would've been over by the time I sat down anyway. Alicia was putting the finishing touches on some girl with her flat strokes and sultry grunts. I like watching Alicia play!!
I watched a bit of the Razzano/Baltacha match next. At usual, Elena wore her patented, "Someone-just-killed-my-puppy" expression and with good reason this time. Elena was trying to make something happen, but Virginie was like....ummmm...look, I'm late for my hair appointment LOL. Razzano played decent and whacked a couple winners with her flat forehand. After the match, I got a pic with her and told her "ALLEZ" w/ a first pump and her coach nearly fell out laughing
Good luck next round babe!! Also worth note is that Elena and her coach watched the 1st set of the Venus/King match lol.....I'm guess Elena didn't take good enough notes....
I was a bit tired from walking around my then and watched the rest of the matches on centre court. I watched Hewitt/Gregorc and Hewitt was just too good with his incessant counter-punching and
"C'MON" shouting. He got a couple bad calls and at one point shouted "WAKE UP!" (ala Kim/Davenport Wimbly SF 05). It was pretty funny. I took a pic of Bec too
The last match was the Fleishman/Gasquet match. Richard looked on point last night. It appeared that Fleischman's tactic was to play the heck out of the Gasquet backhand, but Richard was ready. On too many points, Fleisch would hit a deep flat shot to Gasquet's backhand and Richard would either peg it hard DTL or "whip" it for a short angle Xcourt winner. Fleisch's serve deserted him in the end though.
I'm not particularly a Berdych fan, so I left the tournament after that. I thought was doing myself a favor by leaving a bit early, but really did myself in
I got caught in the height of rush hour traffic and damned near died. I'm going to put this as politely as possible. Japanese people are ruthless when riding trains. I needed several stiff drinks after that....
But enough about that, enjoy the pics
