Mashona Looking for Big Break



With the ATC Tour winding down, American Mashona Washington is looking to make her breakthrough on the indoor courts of the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belguim. The young gunner is coming off an impressive quarterfinal appearance at the U.S. Open.

Washington's first round match will be against Australian, Alicia Molik. This will be the first meeting between the two. Washington is very optimistic about the match and feels very confindent in her strategy.

"It will most likely be a tough match. I feel that I have a slight edge on her. I really have nothing to loose, she's much higher ranked then I am. I think she's got more on the line than I do."

Indeed Molik does. She'll be needing some good results within the next couple of tournaments if she wants to qualify for the Year End Championship tournament. Alicia is currently ranked 11th behind Mashona's doubles partner/countrywoman Venus Williams. Molik and Williams are seperated by a mere 22 points.

"I would definently love to help Venus any way I can. Hopefully I'll be able to get this win for her so she can get a bigger lead, also, it would be nice to get some good results in this big tournament."

The young American is still looking for her maiden title and hopes that within the last couple tournaments of the season she can find it before the season comes to an end.

"Of course every woman on tour wants to win a title, so the competition is tough. I will just have to go out and play every match as if it were a finals match. I still have a couple aces up my sleeve so the others better watch out."
