Arrow Tennis Poker 2002 - Rules

Let’s start with a reminder of the basic rules of Tennis Poker.

You choose the five tennis players who will represent your hand of five cards.

The card values will be decided by the results of your players in the WTA Tour singles tournaments, according to this scoring system:

Draws of 128
Result / Score
Win / A
Final / K
Semifinal / Q - J
Quarterfinal / 10 - 9
4th round / 8 - 7
3rd round / 6 - 5
2nd round / 4 - 3
1st round / 2

Draws of 64
Result / Score
Win / A
Final / K
Semifinal / Q - J
Quarterfinal / 10 - 7
3rd round / 6 - 5
2nd round / 4 - 3
1st round / 2

Draws of 32
Result / Score
Win / A
Final / K
Semifinal / Q - J
Quarterfinal / 10 - 7
2nd round / 6 - 3
1st round / 2

Different values are given to players losing in the same round according to their position in the draw: playing with or near a higher seed means a higher value.

Each tournament will be considered to represent one of the different suits of the cards.

The rounds of Tennis Poker generally last more than a week; if any tennis player competes in more than one tournament, just her best result will count for this game.

The poster with the best combination according to traditional poker rules, wins. Hands are ranked as follows, from high to low:

1 - Straight Flush: five cards in order, all of the same suit.
2 - Four of a Kind: four cards of the same rank.
3 - Full House: a three of a kind and a pair.
4 - Flush: a hand where all the cards are of the same suit.
5 - Straight: five cards in order.
6 - Three of a Kind: three cards of the same rank.
7 - Two Pair: two distinct pairs.
8 - Pair: two cards with the same value.
9 - Highest Card: if there isn’t any combination, then just the highest card is considered.

Let’s take a detailed look at the changes for the 2002 season.

CHOOSING THE TEAM
You can choose any combination of five tennis players without any limitation about their ranking. The rules about the player outside the top 20 and the maximum of three top 10 players have been cancelled. You can even pick the top 5 in the rankings, but considering a Tier V victory counts as a GS title, you don’t need to have big names in your team to score a good combination. My suggestion is to exploit more the lower tier tournaments.

TEAM CHANGES
You will be allowed to change your picks before each leg starts. Threads will be posted one or two weeks before the ongoing leg is over in order to let you make your choices. Of course, if you don’t make any substitution, the combination you had in the previous round will be brought to the following tournament without changes. Remember to check out the commitments to be sure all your players will regularly play in the following weeks.

THE CALENDAR
The 2002 Tennis Poker season will include 8 rounds:

December 31st - February 10th
Gold Coast, Auckland, Sydney, Hobart, Canberra, the Australian Open, Tokyo, Paris.

February 11th - March 17th
Antwerp, Doha, Dubai, Memphis, Bogotà, Scottsdale, Acapulco, Indian Wells.

March 18th - April 28th
Key Biscayne, Porto, Sarasota, Amelia Island, Estoril, Charleston, Budapest.

April 29th - June 9th
Hamburg, Bol, Berlin, Warsaw, Rome, Strasbourg, Madrid, the French Open.

June 10th - July 14th
Birmingham, Vienna, Tashkent, Eastbourne, ‘sHertogenbosch, Wimbledon, Palermo, Casablanca.

July 15th - September 8th
Stanford, Sopot, San Diego, Basel, Los Angeles, Helsinki, Montreal, New Haven, the US Open.

September 9th - October 6th
Bahia, Big Island, Tokyo, Quebec City, Leipzig, Bali, Moscow, Tokyo.

October 7th - end of the season
Filderstadt, Aarhus, Shanghai, Zurich, Bratislava, Linz, Luxembourg, Munich, Surabaya, Pattaya.
THE TOURNAMENTS
Each Tennis Poker tournament will start and finish within the same leg. Only one round per leg made the tournaments to last so much that the first round losers had to wait months for playing again. So, the same leg’s combination will be used to decide the winner round by round for all the matches, and of course the poster with the best result will win the tournament. A qualifying round may be needed to fit the posters in a 8, 16 or 32 draw. Of course, the ranking will be considered to decide the seeds, while the remaining spots will be assigned to the ones who scored the best results. Considering the combination to decide the round results will be the same, there will may be very dangerous qualifiers floating in the main draw.

THE RANKING
In the last two years, I’ve tried a few different types of ranking. The first attempt was based on the best of the last three combinations, while the last one was not far from the WTA Tour ranking except for the quality points. In the next season you’ll be given a certain amount of points based on how good your combination is (the performance score) and you’ll have another score which considers how far you go in the tournaments and gives a bonus for those who are able to beat a poster who is ranked higher.

For each match you win in a tournament, you collect 50 pts.

If you beat any opponent who is ranked higher than you, you are given a bonus of other 50 pts.

The performance score is calculated summing up the values of the five cards and multiplicating for a factor according to the poker combination you’ve scored.

Card values
Ace - 14
King - 13
Queen - 12
Jack - 11
10 - 10
9 - 9
and so on...

Combination factors
30 - Straight Flush
15 - Four of a Kind
10 - Full House
7 - Flush
5 - Straight
4 - Three of a Kind
3 - Two Pairs
2 - Pair
1 - No combination

Examples.

No combination
A / K / 10 / 8 / 5
(14 + 13 + 10 + 8 + 5) x 1 = 50

Pair
Q / Q / 4 / 3 / 2
(12 + 12 + 4 + 3 + 2) x 2 = 66

Two pairs
10 / 10 / 5 / 5 / 2
(10 + 10 + 5 + 5 + 2) x 3 = 96

Three of a kind
A / A / A / 10 / 8
(14 + 14 + 14 + 10 + 8) x 4 = 240

Straight flush
A / K / Q / J / 10
(14 + 13 + 12 + 11 + 10) x 30 = 1800 (Dream, guys, dream. )

SPARE CARDS
Injuries and withdrawals have deeply affected the game. Though each leg lasts at least three or four weeks, it has become more and more frequent for the players to be out of the game for a month or more. In the first nine months of the year, Kournikova didn’t play five times out of nine legs; Serena Williams four times; Davenport three times; Seles and Mauresmo twice; Capriati, Venus Williams, Clijsters, Henin and Dokic once. The only top 10 player who could get a score in each of the first nine rounds was Hingis, who injured herself in the 10th.
So, I think it’s a good idea to have a couple of players sitting on the bench and ready to enter play if they are needed. At the beginning of the tournament each poster will be assigned by random two tennis players among the highest ranked ones who haven’t been included in any team. These spare cards will substitute the players in the team who don’t get a value during the leg. But if the hand of five is complete, they won’t be considered even if they have a better value than the effective players. The spare cards may be used to resolve ties too.

THE JOKERS
A joker is a card which can be given any value and may help you to score better combinations. I’ll use @ as symbol for a joker. In each tournament, the player who loses in the first round to the eventual winner will be the joker and will assume the value which gives you the best possible result according to the other cards in your hand. As the tennis tournaments progress, it will be very interesting to see which players will be eligible round after round.

Some clarifications I’ve given in the other thread.

SIGNING UP
All the posters who played last year must re-register, I would like everyone to sign up again. I know it may be a little bit annoying but after the board switch I think it’s a good idea to check who’s here and who’s still interested in the game. Once you’ve made your picks for the first tournament, you won’t need to sign up again for the following rounds: if you don’t want to make any changes, your combination will automatically enter the upcoming tournaments.

THAT OLD RANKING RULE
All the ranking restrictions have been cancelled, you are allowed to have any combination you’d like to, unless it has already been picked.

SPARE CARDS
Posters don’t choose the replacements, it will be the luck to decide: before the tournament starts, when I compile the draw, I will assign the spare cards completely by chance. I think it will be interesting to push people to follow the results of other tennis players, it may be the chance to discover some new favourites.

A few more changes in the rules, as we’re up to more than 40 contestants.

MAIN DRAW, QUALIFIERS AND WILD CARDS
All the singles main draws will include 32 players: 20 direct entries + 8 qualifiers + 4 wild cards
The wild cards will be given to the players with the best results in the previous tournament.
All the players who can’t enter the main draw will play the qualifying round. There won’t be any match, all the combinations will be ranked and the best four will make it to the main draw.
Qualifiers will receive a bonus of 25 pts.

THE SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION
I will post very soon a new thread about this. As many posters have joined Tennis Poker for the first time and there are a few new rules, I think it’s a good idea to organize a test tournament before the season starts. From December 7th on, all the singles players will take part to a special exhibition where the 2001 average values will be used to decide the results. You’ll have the chance to test your picks in a real contest and to see a practical example of how the rules work. I will explain step by step all I do to prepare the tournament and decide the final outcome. There will be a singles tournament, and a team event leg with three eliminations to let you get in touch with the game.

THE FIRST LEG TOURNAMENT
The exhibition results will be considered to decide the seeds, the direct entries and the wild cards of the first leg, but the ranking points won’t be added to the 2002 total score.

Thank you, good luck!
