Very pleased Monica is still with Yung-Jan. This is pretty good draw. I mean it's not easy but it could have been much worse. Very glad to see then in the 3rd quarter too. Hsieh/Peng are good team but YJ/Chan showed they can be beaten and they are definately preferable to the Williams sisters, Black/Huber or MJMS/NLV. Frankly I think this is Monica's best shot yet to get to her 1st doubles Grand Slam semi (Chan of course has been to two finals). But obviously that is premature to think about too much....lots of work to do first.
It was always a horrible draw for Monica but still it's a shame about the bagel.
I'm really excited for Monica's chances in the doubles. I agree with Chris that they have a real shot at the semis. As big a fan as I am of them, we have no idea what to expect from Raymond/Stubbs, so Monica and Chan could possibly get through there. Chan does have alot of experience at this level too. They start their campaign on Court 11 tomorrow.
On paper that looked like it was going to be a pretty easy match....and it was.
As for Monica's match against Jelena well it was a tough draw but Monica started pretty well and played a decent 1st set. The 2nd set was also more competitive that the score implied although obviously it could have gone a lot better. The good thing is a match like that helps provide insight into what a player needs to work on in their game. In this case I think Monica needs to find that middle ground where she can at times be more aggressive while not quite being as rash as she often was at other times. Monica also needs to work out how to develop her game in a way that takes her to the net more in the future as she is so good there. One day I hope to see Monica playing with a similar approach to what we see now from Martinez Sanchez and in time I do expect Monica to develop a more attacking game than what we see now.
Yes, indeed. And with a very cool partner too. Julian Knowle is a fine doubles player and a very distinctive talent. I will miss Andrei Pavel who Monica played with last year but Julian is a very good choice for this event. Nice to see Monica playing with a fellow two handed on both sides player and I wouldn't be at all suprised if Knowle was able to give Monica some tips on how to handle being a two handed on both sides player on the tour. And like Monica, Julian has great feel with his hands and wonderful touch. I like this team.
Chan did partnered Knowle once in Wimbledon 2008 and did not do bad. I believe Monica can do only better as Chan is not a very good mixed doubles player. But that said, Pennetta on the other hand is always confident and fearless in mixed, it's really a toss up there. Will wait and see and hoping to see her grab a win.
