Not a bad draw seeing as Sevastova didn't finish last year in very good form and she hasn't had much of a rest in the off season either having played the Dubai challenger. And of course Paszek hasn't played since Wimbledon.
One never really knows what sort of form players are going to be in at the start of the season, but Monica is the type of girl who prepares well and I am hopeful of good things as the season begins.
Very good result. I must admit I was secretly a little nervous about this match as Nara just turned 18 and is moving up the rankings very fast and also with it being the 1st match of the year and you never know how that will go.
So it's great that Monica guts it out in the 2nd set with a really strong tiebreak.
Next match should be easier I suspect. Monica destroyed Kucova the 1st time they played losing only one game so it rather looks like Kucova doesn't like the way Monica plays. Still early days but it looks like it could be a nice start to the year for Monica.
Very nice win by Monica over Kristina Kucova. The 1st set didn't go well and Monica dropped her serve 4 times in the set. But great to see how well Monica fought back. She took the 2nd set 6-3 gathering momentum as the set wore on and by the start of the 3rd set she was unstoppable. Monica held Kucova to just 10 points in a very fast 3rd set. Very positive sign seeing Monica win a 3rd set so convincingly. This bodes very well for 2010.
Next up is Rebecca Marino. Having beaten Sevastova and bageled an admittedly unfit Tamira Paszek in her last couple of matches, Marino is not to be underestimated. Having said that, I am very please with Monica's form so far this year and I am looking forward the final round of qulifying. Keep it going Monica.
Very well done. I am very pleased that Monica was able to refocus after that 2nd set. Monica still seems to have those patches where she loses focus but it is great to see that even when she does go into one of those spells she is still capable of regaining that focus and fighting her way past it to victory.
Definately I'm with Andiyan that Monica can keep it going regardless who she gets in the next round. I'm looking forward to it.
