Wasn't a bad performance overall. Monica pretty much played the way she needs to be playing but the execution did let her down too much. This year has been tough, no doubt about it but Monica is still playing some fine tennis at times and I still feel it is just a matter of time before she puts it together. Next year is sure to be better.
Real shame about Sorana retiring injured. I hope she heals quickly. I was looking forward to this match as I thought this was going to be a good opportunity for Monica to have a good confidence-enhancing win. Indoors I do think Monica is a better player than Sorana. The way things turned out however were very disappointing.
Still on the positive side, Monica did get 60 hugely needed ranking points which at least put her in with a decent chance of getting through this year with her place in the top 100 intact. After what has been a rough year finishing the year having held on to her place in the top 100 would be a positive way to end it. Next match doesn't look easy but it is certainly still winable too. Schiavone is a very up and down performer and on a good day she is hard to beat but on another day she is ripe for the picking. But with Schiavone just having reached a final in Japan it is quite possible Llagostera Vives might come out on top in that match or Monica could end up facing a quite tired Schiavone in the next round. Hard to say but either way I do think a quarterfinal is a good possibility here.
