Re: Margaret Court...

2 of her 21 Mixed Slams were shared, so I don't know if they are really counted especially since most say she has 62 total slams over 64.

Wow, I didn't know that. Her achievements look like that of an amateur now.

I know, the damage 2 slams can do.

Anyways, she has the most in singles and most overall, she is the real GOAT

Yeah everywhere I have seen her stats it has listed them as 19 Mixed Doubles Slams. Which is still an awful lot

People say how weak AO was, but they forget she still beat Evert at RG and Navratilova at Wimbledon. Some talk about her like she played in some mug era like the one we're in right now.

But anyway, Court was ranked number one in the most of the years she won the AO and there were normally at least one or two other top tenners - so my logical conclusion is that she would have won it more often than not regardless of who else turned up - just like she did at RG and the US Open despite not having the home-court advantage.

Re: Margaret Court...

Margaret Court is simply the best in history - regardless of how much the current tennis fraternity tries to downplay her achievements in the media.

Re: Margaret Court...

The Grand Slam in 1970 for singles and then 1963 in Mixed (and 1965 I guess if we include the shared AO title), pity she didn't do it in Women's Doubles. (closest being 1963, 1969 and 1973).

Re: Margaret Court...

A nice positive thread for a change.

One other astonishing fact is that in addition to the Calendar Grand Slam in 1970, there were 4 other years that she won 3 of the 4 Singles Slams on offer.

And she is the only woman to ever achieve 2 x Complete Grand Slam Boxed Sets (Singles, Doubles and Mixed). Once in the Open era and once prior.

Re: Margaret Court...

It would be nice for once if we could discuss Margaret's TENNIS ACHIEVEMENTS and not her religious or personal beliefs. They are not relevant no matter what some people seem to think.

Re: Margaret Court...

Her dour presence at the Aussie Open final ceremony this year made me wonder why she bothered turning up in the first place. It was like she was forced to be there.

Re: Margaret Court...

It seems that many people in the tennis fraternity really have it in for Margaret Court.

I may not necessarily agree with some of her personal views but she is entitled to her own opinion.

As far as we are concerned, IMO, it should really only be her tennis exploits which tax us.

I don't know whether she did anything else at the presentation rather than be on stage when the trophies were presented but contrary to jamesuk I was just thinking how, similar to Ann Jones, as neither of them would in any way be considered beauties when they were playing! how gracefully and elegantly she had aged.

If it were solely a numbers game then I think those who point out that the general standard of the Aussie pre-1980s compared to other Slams and by today's standards (for some reason it seems to me that Billie-Jean King's fans more than anyone else get hyper over this) can be questioned do have a valid point.

However, when you're getting into the high teens in numbers of Slam wins you have to consider the whole picture.

You can't change history and the nature of the game was that many top players did not go to Australia. Yes, tennisvideos is right when he says Margaret did have to beat some of the world's leading players in taking her 11 titles but when more often than not half or less of the world's top 10 was in the field and an even lower ratio further down it cannot stand scrutiny as a Slam in the same class as Wimbledon, Forest Hills or Roland Garros.

Based on the evidence of her victory in 1965 which had the strongest field pre-1980's I would agree with Serena-lover that there is every likelihood Margaret would have won most of the titles even in a full field.

You have to accept the game for what it was then and just look at her record in the other Slams which did have most of the leading players of the era.

Yes, she "only" won 3 Wimbledons (incidentally so did Chris Evert) but if you think about it there aren't that many players post WWII who actually won more! Taking into account the fact that Margaret won 3 of the 4 Slams in 1962, 1965, 1969 and 1973 it is just blind ignorance to belittle her achievements. It is also quite amazing that she was able to be out of the game for several long periods and then be able to return and win more Slams. In some years she only lost a handful of matches the whole season.

This doesn't even include her doubles record which is truly sensational although personally to me it's a team and cannot be considered in tandem with the singles record.
