(1) Cecilie Melsted/Mai Grage d. (2) Emma Rønholt/Emilie Francati 4-6 7-6(1) [10-4]
Congrats to Mai/Cecilie
I'm impressed by the two 14-year olds. Good effort! It'll be interesting to see them at the junior championships (beginning in just over a week from now). They're in the U16 class this year, which is quite competitive (with Julie Noe, Martine Ditlev and Ulrikke Høyer, among others).
Danish junior championships begins next monday (April 2nd) but first there's another GP tournament beginning Friday, March 30. This will be the 4th of 10 GP tournaments in 2012. The draw is already out, and there's an interesting match coming up in R1: Cecilie Melsted vs. Simone Alipieva! Not a good draw for Simone though. All the best juniors are basically here except Martine Ditlev.
Julie Noe (KB) and Martine Ditlev (TCO Odense), both 16 years of age, have been selected for the Danish Fed Cup Team. Fed Cup captain Michael Mortensen wants to give the two girls a sense of the level required to play at the Fed Cup. "You can call it an educational journey in Pro tennis. They're here to learn, and they work very hard", says Michael Mortensen. Source.
I had hoped for a more epic battle. I don't know what happened, but I hope Simone's okay.
Mai Grage (seeded 1) has withdrawn from this tournament, so it's looking good for Cecilie for a title win. Julie Noe is probably the favourite to take the other final spot unless Emilie Francati can find some of her 2011 form again! R2 and QF will be played tomorrow, and SF and final on Sunday.
Melsted won't get a q-wildcard into Farum? or any other young dane? they have give out 3 q-wc and 2 mdwc, they still have 2 to give out?
Last year they gave 8 q-wc to Danish players instead of having a lot of byes in QR1. I'm sure they will do the same this year, if possible (of course depending on how many entries they have at the sign in deadline).
There's one huge problem for the best Danish juniors, now I think of it: The semifinals and finals of the Danish junior championships is the same weekend as the Copenhagen WTA qualifying (Saturday and Sunday, 7-8 April)!
What should Melsted do? Go for the U18 title and win another trophy for her collection, or play qualies at the Farum event? Or will both be possible (Junior championships is at Rungsted, not very far from Farum)?
Difficult choice. But it could have been avoided if the Danish Tennis Federation had done some better tournament planning and scheduling!
Amazing result by Emma! Her improvement during the last 8 months or so has just been unbelievable. Well done.
Julie Noe has also been quite good in 2012. She began the year ranked approximately 600 on the ITF rankings, but is now approximately 300. Francati and Melsted, however, are not quite at their 2011 form.
This is not a junior tournament, but all 8 remaining girls in the qf's were juniors!
