Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Emilie Francati, Emma Rønholt and Frederikke Svarre have played for Denmark at the U14 European Summer Cups (qualifying rounds in Slovenia). Denmark lost 0-3 against Switzerland and are out of the competition.

Results:

Single 1: Belinda Bencic d. Emilie Francati 6-1 6-1
Single 2: Jil Belen Teichmann d. Emma Rønholt 6-3 6-2
Double: Bencic/Grimm d. Rønholt/Svarre 6-1 6-0

It has to be said that the Swiss team is very good. Bencic is ranked #3 in the U14 TE rankings, while Francati is #168, and Rønholt #236! But I must also stress that Denmark would most likely have struggled against the other seeded nations in this group. Belarus has a #6 ranked player in their team, and Russia a #5! So there's still some way to go for the Danish girls. But it's nice they get the chance to play these international matches, as there's not much competition at this level in Denmark. It all adds to their experience.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Danish junior championship 2011 (outdoors)

All the best Danish juniors are in Århus this week - competing for the Danish outdoors titles! The big winners at the 2010 outdoors championship were Cecilie Melsted, Martine Ditlev, and Simone Alipieva. They all won three events each (singles, doubles, and mixed) at U16, U14, and U12 respectively! But there will be much more fight this year! The most exciting events will probably be U16 and U14. Here is a quick rundown of the favourites:

U16
Martine Ditlev and Cecilie Melsted are seeded 1 and 2. They are in a league of their own in Denmark, and anything but a final between these two will be a big surprise. Martine has shown better form than Cecilie recently and has passed Cecilie in the Danish rankings. But Martine had a disappointing 1st round loss in her latest tournament - a G5 in Århus where she was seeded #2. So this could go either way.

Another interesting clash is in the quarters where Julie Noe and Ulrikke Høyer will play against each other. Ulrikke was considered a huge talent a few years ago, and was one of the elite players alongside Cecilie Melsted and Martine Ditlev. But Ulrikke never got the important wins when it mattered (and Ulrikke has has a lot of retirements/withdrawals). Julie Noe has had more succes recently and has sort of taken over Ulrikke's status as elite player in Denmark. Julie has also been chosen to play for Denmark at the European Olympics this summer (with Martine Ditlev). Ulrikke Høyer, however, played some really good matches in the Århus ITF tournament recently, so it will be an interesting QF!

U14
The three big contenders for the title are the three top seeds Emilie Francati, Emma Rønholt and Simone Alipieva. Emma and Simone are in the same section, so my guess is that it'll be a final between Emilie and Simone. Noone else should be able to beat any of these three, but I'll keep an eye on the 4th and 5th seeds, Frederikke Svarre and Ella Hedeboe. Frederikke got a wild card for the Copenhagen WTA, which was a big surprise, and Ella Hedeboe had a really good week at the TE Birkerød a few weeks ago beating some seeded players. Frederikke Svarre, btw, is the daughter of former Modern Pentathlon world champion Pernille Svarre.

U12
Again, the four top seeds seems head and shoulders above the rest. They are (1)Helena Steenberg, (2) Sofie V. Bjerringgaard, (3) Ida Emilie Stilling Krause, (4) Laura Cecilie Michelsen. Helena Steenberg won the indoors title a couple of months ago, and will be the favourite again.

U18
Unfortunately there are not many U18 players. It seems like most girls have found other interests or priorities at this age. While the U12 girls tournament has an almost full 64-draw qualification to enter the 32 players main draw, the U18 girls had no qualy and still don't have a full 32 player main draw!

Anna Signe Rasmussen is the favourite by a good margin. Amanda Arildsen Wessung is not participating here; she's one of the few Danish juniors who's missing the outdoors championships 2011.

Danish junior championship 2011 (outdoors)

The semi finals should have been played today, but heavy rains may cause some delays (maybe untill tomorrow?). Here are the SF draws:

EDIT: Semi final results added:

U12
(1)Helena Steenberg, Lyngby d. (4)Laura Cecilie Michelsen, KB 6-2 4-6 6-2
(2)Sofie V. Bjerringgaard, KB d. (3)Ida Emilie Stilling Krause, Birkerød 6-4 6-1

U14
(1)Emilie Francati, Gentofte d. (4)Frederikke Svarre, Hillerød 6-2 6-3
(3)Simone Alipieva, KB d. (2)Emma Rønholt, Gentofte 6-3 6-3

U16
(1)Martine Ditlev, Odense TCO d. (4)Isabel Fenger, HRT 6-1 6-1
(2)Cecilie Melsted, KB d. (3)Julie Noe, KB 6-1 3-6 6-3

U18
(1)Anna Signe Rasmussen, Birkerød d. Mathilde Aaskov Henriksen, Fruens Bøge 6-2 6-2
(2)Emilie Elsvad, KB d. (3)Malene Stripp, Birkerød 6-3 6-1

So far no surprises at all! In fact 15 of the 16 top-4 seeded players have made it to the semis! Many of these players are also in the doubles semis (and mixed semis), and some of these will have a good chance of taking two or three titles at the championships.

While three girls were able to win 3 titles each a year ago, noone was able to do that in 2011. 5 girls won two titles:

Helena Steenberg (U12 singles and doubles)
Ida Emilie Stilling Krause (U12 doubles and mixed)
Emilie Francati (U14 singles and doubles)
Emma Rønholt (U14 doubles and mixed)
Anna Signe Rasmussen (U18 singles and mixed).

Cecilie Melsted (1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze) and Martine Ditlev (1 gold, 2 silvers) also had a good week. It's really difficult for these two to win more than that since they're competing in the same class (U16).

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

A lot of photos (271) from the recent Danish junior championships can be seen here. Unfortunately there are not many match photos. A lot of the best juniors are also missing for some strange reason (Melsted, Noe, Høyer, etc.).

Here are a few samples:

The U12 podium. From left: Sofie V. Bjerringgaard, Helena Hildebrand Steenberg, Laura Cecilie Michelsen, Ida Emilie Stilling Krause.

The U14 podium. From left: Simone Alipieva, Emilie Francati, and Emma Rønholt.

U16 mixed doubles winners Andreas Moltke-Leth and Martine Ditlev. I assume it's the mixed runner up Frederik Ørvad at the far right.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Emma Rønholt and Emilie Francati will play at the European U14 Championships in the Czech Republic next week.

Emma Rønholt, btw, has had some impressive results in Denmark the last couple of days. She defeated Emilie Elsvad (U18 silver medalist a week ago!) and Julie Noe (U16) before losing to Mai Grage in the SF at the GP series in Helsingor. Well done. And good luck to both girls in the Czech Republic!

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Simone Alipieva is playing some TE tournaments in Austria the next couple of weeks. This week in Fürstenfeld, Austria, and next week at the Generali Bambini Cup in Kufstein.

Simone has had a lot of success at TE tournaments lately - winning both singles and doubles in her last two tournaments! And she has not lost any sets either. But she had to retire in the Danish junior singles final, and gave a walkover in the doubles final, so I hope she's ok! She has a title to defend in Austria: She won the Bambini Cup in 2010 (U12) in a very convincing manner without losing sets, and hardly losing any games on her way to the title. Good luck, and stay fit!

Simone won her first round in Fürstenfeld today 6-1 6-0 against an Austrian player.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Emilie Francati lost in the 1st round and Emma Rønholt lost in the 2nd round (had a 1st round bye) at the European Championships. Both girls were up against slightly higher ranked girls, but a win would definetely have been possible. Too bad.

Emilie and Emma are also playing doubles together. They won their 1st match but will face the no. 1 seeds in round 2. Good luck!

Another event taking place this and next week is the European Youth Olympics at Trabzon, Turkey. It is for players born 1996 and 1997, and Denmark will participate with Martine Ditlev and Julie Noe. Good luck!

European Youth Olympic Festival 2011, Trabzon, Turkey

1st round
Julie Noe def. Caroline Daxhelet (BEL) 6-1, 7-6
(14)Beatrice Lombardo (ITA) def. Martine Ditlev 3-6, 6-0, 6-2

2nd Round
(9) Deborah Chiesa (ITA) def. Julie Noe 6-1 6-2

It was hard to find draws and results from this tournament, but TF Moderator Meelis helped me finding draws here. Results are from DIF (Danmarks Idræts Forbund).

Julie Noe/Martine Ditlev will also play doubles. Their 1st round against a team from Israel is scheduled today (Tuesday). GL!

EDIT: There was actually an error in DIF's results which suggested that Martine had won her 1st round. I've corrected this now.
