Well done Mai!

Will she now get a Ranking? This her 3. tournament...or does she have to win in MD?

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Yes, but I'm not sure how the rules are interpreted? After Slovenia Open Mai Grage wrote this on her blog:
Quote:
Now I need two more results to enter the WTA rankings
If she's correct then she still needs one more result.

Grage's first tournament was two years ago, so maybe it must be 3 tournaments within one year? I'm not sure though. But she'll enter the rankings after Copenhagen anyways...

Why it taken so long to post the Main Draw in England, don't they start play today?

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

No, main draw begins wednesday 28 JUL (both singles and doubles). It is a bit unusual to begin md so late in the week, and it must be a tough schedule for those players who goes far in singles and doubles (two matches a day!). Let's hope there are no rain delays, which will make the schedule even harder...

I guess main draw (singles and doubles) and wednesday's OOP should be out tonight (most recent OOP can always be found here). But yes, they seem quite slow in updating draws and results!

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

R1 main draw:

Lisa WHYBOURN (GBR) (1) Vs Malou EJDESGAARD (DEN)
Daneika BORTHWICK (GBR) Vs Yasmin CLARKE (GBR)
Mai GRAGE (DEN) Vs Alexandra WALKER (GBR)
Julia MORIARTY (IRL) Vs Tara MOORE (GBR) (8)

Malou and Mai are in the same quarter! But what a tough draw for Malou!
Grage doesn't play doubles here at Chiswick.

Mai has a good chance to get a MD win.
But she need to be in Copenhagen on saturday so she can't win too much...

Held og Lykke Mai!

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Cecilie Lundgaard Melsted (born 1995) got a Q wildcard for 220K Danish Open. Congratulations! I'm sure it'll be a great experience for her. Good luck.

QR1 Stephanie Foretz (FRA) vs. (wc) Cecilie Melsted

Foretz is ranked 183 on WTA. Cecilie Melsted has no WTA ranking which is hardly surprising being a junior player with no WTA or ITF matches on her cv! But she is still ranked #5 in Denmark on the women's ranking - actually above Mai Grage! The match will be played today, Saturday.

QR1 Stephanie Foretz (FRA) vs. (wc) Cecilie Melsted 6-1 6-1

Match stats:

Cecilie won just 1 point (of 13) on her 2nd serve. But still a good effort from her, I think. Remember, she has never played any ITF or WTA match before, not even a 10K! Interview in next post.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Interview from the official e-Boks tournament site.

Quote:
Cecilie Melsted defeated but never afraid

15 year-old Cecilie Melsted got a qualifying wildcard for the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2010, enabling her to experience the highest level, which she did when she played a qualifying match Saturday at Farum Arena's center court. But it was just an experience and nothing more for the young Danish player who begins in ninth grade after the summer break.

Cecilie Melsted was defeated 6-1 6-1 by French Stephanie Foretz, but the young KB-player did not feel outplayed and had energy to smile when she talked about the great experience in her first international senior tournament.

"I played along quite well, but she could always hit some good shots on the important points," Cecilie Melsted said talking about the difference between her level and the level of her French opponent - the world No 183.

"I hope to be able to play at this level, but I must work hard to be better. But it was cool to play a WTA Tournament," said Cecilie Melsted, who was a bit nervous when she went on the pitch.

"It was a little weird when I came onto the court - I do not usually play on such big courts, but once you play, you don't look around. And I went out and took it as an experience," said Cecilie Melsted.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

"I felt I could play along quite well at times but my much older oppenent had an advantage physically. I hope I once will reach this level and play more WTA-tournaments", the 15 year-old Cecilie Melsted said according to dtftennis.dk.

Pictures of Cecilie Melsted from yesterday (dtftennis.dk):

Yeah she was never going to stand a chance against such an experienced player as Foretz

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Cecilie Melsted at the Wozniacki Academy yesterday:

Cecilie Melsted will play at the Danish outdoor Championships next week. She's in the main draw (draw will be published Sunday evening). Interestingly Melsted has the second highest Danish ranking of all players at the Championships as neither Wozniacki, Barbat, Ejdesgaard, or Grage will participate. Good luck to Cecilie and all the other Danish talents!

Winning every 3rd point against such an experienced player is not bad at all. It might not result in many games but at least she was able to play some close games. I saw the match and Cecilie did well. As the stat shows then she came under a lot of pressure when serving 2nd serv but she also hit some excellent winners from time to time. And she was able to keep up the pace.

Cecilie is another DK-junior with good potential (and she might deserve a thread of her own )

I agree. I'm actually preparing a post about her because of the Danish Chapionships this week where she's seeded 2! Cecilie (born 1995) is by far the best Danish player in the three-year gap after Mai Grage and Barbat (1992). I'll probably put something up tomorrow in a Melsted thread.

There are also some big Danish talents born after Melsted, of course, maybe even bigger than Melsted (ie. Ditlev, Alipieva), but it's still hard to say how their career will progress. But they are worth keeping an eye on, and I'll try to post something about them in this Junior thread.
