Can someone please explain to me exactly why Dokic can hardly win a match anymore?
I mean, physically there are no problems. With a certain amount of practice she should be able to be at least half as good as she was. And at her best she was a slam semifinalist, quarterfinalist, won the Italian Open, 4th in the Olympics etc.
Were these results some kind of elongated fluke or is there some other plausible explanation why she can't even win a match in a 10k? I know about the father and all that, but come on!

Jelena is a confidence player. If she's confidence, she can smack with the best of them.
She's also lacking a solid support network.
Before she had the whole of Australia behind her.
Now she doesn't.
She used to live about 5 minutes drive from me, btw lol.

Its got to be confidence, especially with a hard hitting game, shes prob a little tentative in her matches and looses the killer edge that made her sucha great player.

Re: Can someone please explain to me exactly why Dokic can hardly win a match anymore?
Many things:
1. A lack of rigorous, consistent training -- leading inevitably to
2. Repeated injuries.
3. A lack of real coaching.
4. Wildly fluctuating level of motivation.
5. Low confidence based on the above and on the natural
6. rustiness/ lack of rhythm/ dormancy of match instincts, which come from hardly ever playing tournaments.
Jelena has now signed on for several tournaments in a row. If she actually shows up to play them this time (and if her ranking is high enough to actually get into them), then it's a great start, and we should start to see her results improve pretty quickly.
IF she stays healthy, which leads us right back to #1 ...

Just lack of trainings... She got some extra weight so that is a prob as well...

I hear what you are saying but depsite all those reasons there should still be glimpses of the old Jelena. She should still be able to string a few decent matches together every so often & be ranked at least top 100. I'm beginning to think that she was always crap and somehow fluked a couple of good years.

I wouldn't say she was crap, she was not destined to be a number one ranked player or a winner of multiple slams. Nevertheless, she had very clean groundstrokes, her forehand was pretty big and her big game suited the grass courts and it's the reason for her success and good results at wimbledon. She had good results on clay as well so she wasn't just good on grass, she was pretty solid on all courts.
I guess being away from the rigours of top flight tennis does have an impact on your game. Seles and Hingis are a few of the exceptions. (but you can tell Hingis is not the same player she once was and Seles despite being even more successful upon returning after a two and a half year hiatus was never the same player again) Molik is struggling mightily to find that form that took her to the top ten ranking just before getting ill.

Hoping to see great tennis from Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Amelie Mauresmo, Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic. Venus's backhand rocks!!!!!!!!!
Hingis will always sparkle in my eyes because "No one plays like Hingis – no one else could." as Carillo wrote.

DO you know that? Kuznetsova's coach claimed she had no fitness issues at Indian Wells. All you had to do was look at her to know better.
Dokic used to be a top five player. She was capable of beating literally the best female athletes in the world. Which means she WAS one of the best female athletes in the world. Now she can't beat collegiate players. That's not 'lack of confidence'. That's being bigger, faster, stronger, more experienced, having better groundstrokes, a better serve .... and losing consistently.
I think she's caught emotionally (and subconsciously) between not wanting to play anymore, and not wanting to disappoint her Dad. So she's playing, but WAY below par.
