I personally watched that match.

Graf's father was involved in an altercation in the stands. From the first ball Graf struck, she hit long. It was the first time and only time I ever saw Graf throw a match to get off-court as quickly as possible. It wasn't Arantxa's play per se that prompted the blow-out. It was Graf's tanking the match to get the match finished.

Re: Recent & former TOP players' worst defeats...

I don't think losing to a current\former world #1 or slam winner can be considered "worst".
I agree with the Coetzer over Graf one. to be fair though, amanda was always able to get under steffi's skin, but the scoreline in this case was shocking.

True, but Graf was seriously injured in the early part of 1997 and shouldn't have been playing at all. Instead of heeding her doctor's advice she chose to play on until Roland Garros before she finally decided to do the sensible thing and have her knee operated on. However, many of the really horrible losses suffered by the top players (e.g. Seles' loss to Hingis) have similar extenuating circumstances.

The loss to ASV at the 1991 French Open is more inexplicable because Graf was in good physical shape at the time and was just coming off wins over Seles (Hamburg) and ASV (Berlin) in her previous tournaments. Unfortunately it just wasn't her day and I've never seen her play worse. The lowest point of the match was when Graf had the entire open court (with ASV in the other corner) to smack a winner into and ended up slamming it in the alley instead. Oy vey!
