^ Thanks for the report, sounds like she really wanted it.

I gave her an encouraging tweet on Twitter, and she favourited it, hopefully she will keep at it.

Tennis: Miracle man James McGee yesterday stormed back from the brink to dramatically fulfil his dream of winning a place in the main draw of the US Open.

But that scenario looked an extremely remote possibility after a first-set disaster against China’s Ze Zhang when the Irish No 1 failed to win a game in an opener which his opponent needed only 25 minutes to wrap up.

But displaying the courage of a lion and nerves of steel, McGee gradually hauled himself back into contention in this third-round qualifying contest.

And and after levelling at one set all, he went on to put Zhang spectacularly to the sword on a 0-6 6-4 6-4 scoreline after two hours and two minutes.

As the scoreline suggests, the 195-ranked McGee was all at sea in the opening set after twice pushing ranked 182-ranked Zhang to deuce in the first game.

However, the Castleknock man, who had defeated the No 30 seed, India’s Yuki Bhambri, 5-7 6-2 7-5 in the second round on Thursday, provided his supporters with a flicker of hope by breaking China No 1 Zhang to love in the opening game of the second set before holding for a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh game of the second set, McGee blew a chance to take a 5-2 lead by not converting a break point, but after the next two games went with serve he held to 15 to close out the set.

That encouraging momentum was maintained in the decider, with McGee breaking to 30 in the opening game, and after saving two break points in the second game and three break points in the fourth, he moved 3-1, and subsequently 4-2, in front.

Remarkably, the Irish ace broke to love for a 5-2 lead but Zhang underlined his battling qualities by breaking serve and then holding to claw his way back to 4-5.

Serving for the match, McGee set up three match points, but Zhang fought back to deuce, and then saved another match point before the Irish player finally clinched victory.

McGee will now earn at least $36,000 even if he loses in the first round of the event at Flushing Meadows but he will hope to maintain his momentum.

Re: irish tennis

Congrats to Sam Barry who won his third singles of the year 15,000 in gabon in Africa and will reach a career high of 285, commiserations to Louk Sorensen who was beaten in the challenger final today by Serbia's Viktor Troicki who was as high as no 12 in the world, on the bright side Louk will reach a career high of 185.

it has being a brilliant week for irish mens tennis with james mcgee qualifying for the us open and will reach a career high of 179

i think if all going well for the first time ever we will have three irish tennis players playing at the qualifying of the australian open in january.

Re: irish tennis

Another first for Irish Tennis, its on the rise

Ireland made history in winning all 3 agegroups in the Tri-nations tournament which was played in Lansdowne Tennis Club last weekend.
Perhaps inspired by the achievements of James McGee in qualifying for the US Open this month the mood in the camp was good from the get go and the never say die attitude that prevailed throughout the camp was a big factor in closing out some tight matches.
The under 12 girls Ali McClean and Olivia Moriotti had to dig deep into their reserves to claw their way through a championship tie-break which sealed victory for their age-group under the steady guidance of their experienced team captain Lynsey McCullough, herself no stranger to tri-nations competition.
Ammar Elamin and Conor Gannon were consistency personified and never dropped a set enroute to helping bring the U12s title home.
The biggest drama played out in the U14s where going into the final round of doubles vs. Scotland Ireland needed to win either the boys or girls doubles, failing this they needed to bring one of the matches to a third set, as in the event of a tie the winner is decided on a count back on sets won. With both matches going in Scotland's favour the Irish girls Sofia Derivan and Georgia Drummy dug deep for the team at a set & 2-5 down to claim the second set and notch up that all important point for the U14s. The foundation had been laid the previous day as Ronan Sweeney and Daniel Vlas took the lead with some great singles performances. Their team captain John McGahon showed his experience as a former international player in instilling that fighting mentality.
The U18s were impressive from the start winning 6 of their opening day singles matches. The team featured Julie Byrne, Lauren Deegan, Osgar O'Hoisin & Sam Bothwell. Their captain Stephen Nugent, having worked with them through their junior years expressed his pride & delight for them as they accepted their trophies.
President of Tennis Ireland Mrs Ann O'Connor congratulated the players, their team captains and all involved saying it was a true reflection of where Irish junior tennis is at today.
Tennis Ireland is indebted to BNP Paribas who sponsor the national academy and play a big part in making it possible for talented Irish juniors to reach their potential.

Re: irish tennis

Bowtell won her 1st round match in shrewsbury on her 21st birthday today. In other news Sinead Lohan has gone to Miami university. We'll see how she gets on there and if she has the game and desire in 4 years on make it on the tour. I think it was the right move for her as she struggled to make an impact above g4 level on the junior itf tour.
