What women's tennis needs: The Williams sisters at their best
This isn't going to be thesis or anything but as someone who isn't a particularly big fan of either of the sisters I feel it's clear the tour desperately needs them to be challenging for big titles to bring some life back into the game.
Yes i'm sure some people think it's fine right now but i'm finding it increasingly dull as i get on in years (i'm only 23 btw).
Can you imagine how much excitement there would be if Venus, Serena, Henin, Mauresmo, Sharapova, Clijsters, Hingis, the Russians etc all brought out their A-games in a tournaments! (or at least half decently )
I swear women's tennis has never seen better quality than the days when Hingis and the sisters were slugging it out late in slams with the likes of Seles, Davenport etc playing at high a standard as well.
I miss those days sometimes
I miss chubby Patty as well
I miss healthy young Chanda as well
I miss Seinfeld as well
I know i'm talking unrealistic hogwash but i don't care! And i don't want constant all Williams finals either because they were painful.

I know these thoughts aren't particularly original either but i just felt like a good old rant after a few months off.

What women's tennis needs is five set matches. Let the bitches REALLY slug it out.

Re: What women's tennis needs: The Williams sisters at their best
I think Mauresmo would do great with 5-set matches, so I am up for that. And Dementieva would probably be more suited for the big occasion with longer matches...so yes, definitely bring them in!
On your original post, switz, I do agree. I would love to see the Williams' back at their best, especially Serena! Tennis would just be that much more interesting. However, only a few would be able to keep anywhere near them so each coin does have two sides...they would likely dominate tennis in a similar way that they used to.

I think Henin and Mauresmo have lifted their games significantly though. i doubt whehter the best Serena and Venus can produce now would be at the standard they used to set due to the injuries/ageing etc so i think it would set the scene for some epic encounters. Especially when you factor in clay court season etc.

True, true. It is just Serena at her best, even on clay, is too much for anyone in the history of the game I think. If it was Serena and Venus back playing fit but not quite at their best then yes we would have major epic matches.
I agree more with the poster who said about 5 sets, that would create such drama in women's tennis! The amount of matches that would be epic 5 setters at the business end of Grand Slams!

Are you kidding? Dementieva would wind up with 40-50 doubles in a five-set match, instead of the 12-16 she serves up in TWO-setters.

Re: What women's tennis needs: The Williams sisters at their best
I really think the Williams Sisters are going to come back and make tennis intersting again . I don't believe 2006 was an indication of what is to come for them. I mean Venus played what ,5 events and Serena played 4? If they play a full schedule next year I am sure they will find the form that took them to the top !

Yes, well how many times have you seen the following:
Dementieva fighting relentlessly and almost/coming back from the brink of defeat in a three-setter.
In big matches, Dementieva go completely off the boil and not be able to get herself into the match.
Lots, I should imagine if you follow her tennis. 5 sets would help both fo these, would it not? She is also extremely fit and could probably outlast some opponents. I think 5 sets would definitely benefit Elena.

You're kidding, right? Five set matches on the WTA would = horrendous quality, even more injuries, BORING viewing and endless sets of tanking. They're bad enough on the ATP.
And back to the thread - of course the tour needs them back to their best, because it SUCKS right now, let's face it. But, I think it's unrealistic in thinking we'll actually get to see both back at their best again for a sustained period: They're not as motivated as they once were, the gamestyles they both dominated the tour with for 2/3 years eventally caught up with them, and they can't seem to stay healthy for more than two tournaments in a row.
Serena could get back to number one after Wimbledon if she really wanted to, I have no doubt about that. Will she? I don't think so. I read last night she's scheduled to play some tier III in India, mid-Feb?!
