'02 was really good, because the Belgians were quite good by then, plus V/S. This year is quite strong too.

um, 2001 and 2002 had 16 player fields. those were the days of just the plain old bracket YECs.

I was just going to say that. So I'd say those fields were better because they had a higher number of players where there was a chance for more upsets. But I do understand the purpose of RR.

2002 was pretty good, especially that terrific Capriati/S Williams semifinal. Too bad that physical match prevented Serena from playing her best in the final.

i knew 2002 would be the pick for people.
now, look carefully - read "field"
there is no possible way anyone could say the 2006 field isn't the best ever for the purpose of this tourny - the year end top8 tourny.
i mean, of course - a field of Graf, Nav, Seles, Evert, Sabatini, Hingis, ASV and Austin would be better players in all - Peshke-Sugiyama would make the greatest match if it were the final of 2005, but the question wasn't about best tourny by matches nor all time greatness - it was about the field, and i cannot see how the top8 all making it, when it was clear for weeks that they would be there (as opposed to years when the last few spots were last minute calls) means the trule best8 of the year are in, and even if it would completly suck from now on (a bit so far, i admit) it's still best of the 6. look at the 2002 rankings and you'll understand better.
but of course - it's the best one williams, dokic, hantuchova fans are gunna pick.
