Osaka 1r: Stefanie Vögele d. Sophie Ferguson, 6-4 7-6 (7/5)
I must admit that Stefanie's victory was as sweet as an Alpen bar after her disastrous first-round losses at ITF Níngbō and ITF Tokyo. It's clear that she plays much better at Tour-level, so it's essential that she makes the most of her WTA tournaments so that she'll still be allowed to play them come mid-2011.
That second set was by far the most intriguing of all the sets played at Osaka today. Stefanie was *0-2 and 3-4* down, then 5-4*, 6-5* and 6-6 (6/3*) up.
That last point at 6-6 (*6/5) might well have been the most important of her career, as she currently stands at the crossroads of the ITF quicksand and the WTA Tour escalator.
