Re: Madison Brengle Cheering Thread

Madi lost a close one to top seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6 (8). 7-6 (3). I just hope Pavlyuchenkova didn't pull her convient injury rime outs like she did against Paszek in the US Open finals last year. Still a great run for Madi. It should give her loads of confidence and she should build on this success. Great job Madi!!

Re: Madison Brengle Cheering Thread

Madison
But it's been an awesome tournament. Hope she can pick up lots of experience from this event alone. And she's a fighter. Too bad she couldn't convert her 2sps in the first set.

Re: Madison Brengle Cheering Thread

MELBOURNE, Australia — The carrot known as a Junior Tennis Grand Slam title is still dangling in front of Madison Brengle. The feat has been reachable for the 16-year old Dover native in her short career but the round of 16 always got the best of her.

Friday night was perhaps her best shot at a Slam title in her handful of appearances. However, Brengle, the 16th seed, ran into top-seeded and defending champ Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and came up just short 7-6, 7-6 in the Junior Australian Open final.

Despite the loss, Brengle can come back to the United States with her head held high. In Australia, she advanced the farthest she has in her short career in a Junior Slam. She had never been through the round of 16 prior to this week.

It didn’t help that she battled the top-ranked amateur girls’ player in the world either. Just making the run to the finals was sufficient for Brengle.

“She’s had No. 1 for juniors for all year,” Brengle said of her opponent in an online interview. “You can see that yes you can do this. It’s comforting that you know you can do it. It’s tough but it’s certainly worth it when you get opportunities like this.”

Pavlyuchenkova’s ranking didn’t seem to deter Brengle early in the final. The two had met before at a tune-up tournament prior the Junior Wimbledon with Pavlyuchenkova coming out on top.

“It was a good match,” Brengle said. “I’m excited to play her again.”
Friday, Brengle shed the memory of that Wimbledon warm-up loss and built a 5-3 lead in the first set before Pavlyuchenkova’s experience took over. Pavlyuchenkova took a 6-5 advantage and finally won the opening set by winning the tiebreaker 8-6.

And while Serena Williams continued her surge back to the professional elite at nearby Rod Laver Arena, Brengle didn’t fold after the first set.

Instead, she rallied from a deficit in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker. Pavlyuchenkova ultimately took the tiebreaker 7-3 to seal the match.

Competing in the final ended an enjoyable stretch for Brengle. First, she competed in the professional Australian Open, falling in the first round.

Then she motored through the junior tourney, knocking off lower seed after lower seed en route to her first championship match in a Slam.

“I’m kind of in a little bit of shock,” Brengle said of her week. “It feels like all of my hard work is paying off. Everything is paying off. It’s really cool.”

Re: Madison Brengle Cheering Thread

More article that I found after she lost to Patty.

Brengle’s play pleases mom; Dover native makes strong showing at Australian Open

DOWNSTATE — Her 16-year-old daughter was playing the biggest tennis match of her young life halfway around the world.
But Gabby Brengle was on the court herself, giving lessons at the Dover Indoor Tennis Center.
She welcomed the distraction. It saved her from agonizing over every point in Madison’s first-round match in the Australian Open Tuesday night.
Not that it kept the elder Brengle from receiving continuous updates on the match from various people around the courts.
“I was getting them all over the place,” Gabby said with a laugh.
Eventually, Madison lost the match, falling to 28-year-old Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 6-3, 6-4. But Brengle put up a good fight, making Schnyder earn the victory in a matchup of the ninth-ranked player in the world against No. 497.
“We’re so proud of her,” said Gabby. “She did fantastically, I think.”
For Gabby, it was rather fitting that she followed her daughter’s match at Dover Indoor. After all, there were so many people in the Dover tennis community who were responsible for Madison getting her big chance in Australia.
While other teen prodigies come out of tennis academies in Florida, Brengle’s career has been homegrown.
Starting when she was 7, the youngster honed her skills by playing against adults in Dover.
“I think one of the neatest things was, last night I was at the indoor courts,” Gabby said the other day. “And out on those four courts, there were five men playing who had all played lots and lots of tennis with Madison.
“They all helped her. We’re not the traditional tennis setting — what most of these players kind of grow up with. She was more a product of Dover.
“They all followed her and were very excited about her. A lot of them had a real piece in what’s she doing now.”
It’s too soon to say what Brengle’s good showing in Australia will mean for her career. She earned a wild card spot in the Grand Slam event by winning an eight-player event.
When she qualified, the Brengles started receiving calls from prospective agents. For the moment, though, Madison plans to stay an amateur.
The youngster is still in Melbourne where she’ll compete in the Australian Open Junior Championships, which start today.
Despite the sizeable odds against her, chances are Madison will be disappointed she didn’t win her match on Tuesday, says her mother.
“She always feels like, this match, I have to try and win,” said Gabby, who is also her daughter’s coach. “I know that aspect that a lot of people feel like, ‘Oh, I’m not expected to win so I can really (play relaxed).’
“She’s not like that. She’s never reacted that way.”
Her mother could appreciate how big a moment it was, though.
It’s not every day a kid from Dover gets to play the world’s ninth-ranked player in one of the sport’s four biggest events.
“It’s pretty eye-opening,” said Gabby. “It was very exciting.
“What’s neat is that each step has been memorable. Every step along the way is, ‘This is your big moment right now.’ And that’s how she’s taken it.

Thanks for the articles.
Shame. But a fantastic couple of weeks - testing Schnyder & getting to the finals, losing in a really close battle against the no.1 seed!

Good luck for the rest of the year!
