And teaching English in an Eastern European country? My mom hates the idea (thinks that I will be wasting time). What do you all think?

Well i went straight from High School to university. I have been there for 3 years and have 1 more year to go. I was planning on doing a masters straight away afterwards but i'm begining to feel education burnout.

I've now decided to take a year out after graduating working for 5/6 months to gain some experiecne and money but then go traveling for around 4 months maybe less and experience more of this world.

The jist is i regret not taking a gap year after school so i think its a great idea plus it will look good on your C.V.

Well, it all depends on how motivated you are, because you don't want to take a year off and that turn into the rest of your life, but if you are motivated enough to go back and continue you'll be fine.

I know my volleyball coach's boyfriend got out of college and worked in the hospital for like 2 years before goin back to med school this year.

Not quite sure that helps you out but maybe.

Any chance to travel, see the world, build your own experiences... DO IT! Especially while you are young. As you get older you have too much going on... you will never have the chance again!! And you need to get out from under mom too; obviously she controls your thought and deed. DO IT!! Then move out when you get home, think your own thoughts free of those people and institutions which control you!!

Why would you want to go to an eastern european country to teach english? If you are from a western country this idea is so absurd that I can't even understand it.

do it! make the most of your youth. u can learn so much more about yourself and the world by actually living in another culture, rather than sitting in a classroom and reading about it in a book. i am taking a year off next yr to backpack around europe before i go to university (college in america) the following year!

Do it! You can get TEFL-certified extremely easily, and a lot of the time if you are offered a job they will pay for it for you. You may not get paid very well but if money isn't your main concern there is so much to gain from TEFL-ing in a foreign country. If I don't get into university I am definitely going to take a gap year and teach in a TEFL college for a year.

I don't see how teaching english in another country is a waste of time.

1) You'll have a job
2) You'll be able to experience living on your own...in another country for that matter
3) You'll gain experience teaching english to those who don't have it as a first language, which will be difficult, yet rewarding.

I don't see anything wasteful about the idea. The only thing you should consider is your motivation to return to school, as others have mentioned, if you really wish to return to school afterwards. I'm a master's student currently, totally looking forward to finishing my thesis and getting a full-time job, using the knowledge I have gained and using it in the real world. I plan to do a Ph. D program in the future, but I have been in school my whole life and want other experiences other than school while I am young.

I say...if you want to do it, do it. Don't NOT do it, just because someone else says not to, otherwise you'll regret it later.

it's a waste of time. i used to think it would be great, but really, u might as well finish studying first and take a year off later. that's what i did. i got my advanced diploma, took 8 months off, and finished my degree and now i'm in my final sem of my masters.

the reason is because sometimes, when u're actually studying, u get really sick of it and just want out. i did. and the 8 months really helped. i travelled a bit, went did a standard course at outward bound, worked as a trainee in the PR department of a shipping company and decided to travel to australia and complete my education here.

if i had taken a year off after school, i'd now be 1 year and 8 months behind schedule.
