Singles

Final
Jeanne Matthey d. Marguerite Broquedis 6-2 7-5

-------------------------------------------

Doubles

Won by Jeanne Matthey/Daisy Speranza

Mixed Doubles

Marguerite Broquedis/Andre Gobert

In 1911, Jeanne Matthey won the singles title at the Closed French Championships for the third year in a row. In the Challenge Round she beat Marguerite Broquedis, 6-2, 7-5. The latter player (b. 17 April 1893) was arguably the best female lawn tennis player to come from France before Suzanne Lenglen.

-------------------------------
Doubles

Won by Jeanne Matthey/Daisy Speranza

Won by Daisy Spranza/William Laurentz

In 1912, Jeanne Matthey won the women's single title at the Closed French Championships for the fourth consecutive and last time. In the Challenge Round she defeated a married player, Marie Danet, 6-2, 7-5. Marie Danet was the mother of Roger Danet, who would play competitive lawn tennis in the 1920s and have a relationship with Suzanne Lenglen.

Despite her success in the Closed French Championships, Jeanne Matthey did not win any tournament of any significance outside France. However, during her career she did manage to beat Suzanne Lenglen in a singles match twice. Jeanne Matthey's first victory came over Suzanne Lenglen came in 1912, in the semi-final of the tournament held in Compiègne, France. Jeanne Matthey won the match 6-3, 6-1. Suzanne Lenglen was 13 years of age at the time.

Mixed Doubles

Won by Suzanne Lenglen/Max Decugis

Notes: At the age of merely 14 the sensational Suzanne Lenglen almost wins her nations title. She gives Broquedis a strern test in the final. Amazingly this will be Suzanne's last defeat until 1921, when she defaults in the US Nationals. In the doubles final the twin Amblard sisters retain their title.

1919
Though the war was over France was still too devastated to hold a national title or the World's Hard Court. Events were held on the riviera, where Lenglen reamined unbeaten.

A packed crowd of 4,000 watch as Molla clocks the ball in an all out effort to beat Lenglen. It is closer than the 6-2 6-3 score suggests, and only Molla's errors and Suzanne's solid defense keep the Norsewoman from getting more games. Lenglen almost considered defaulting due to blistered feet, but was dramatically ordered to remain on court by her father. Interest was so intense that seats were going for hundreds of francs and 5,000 fans had to be turned away from the gates.

Lenglen spoke after the quarterfinals-declaring she would be sad if Molla lost before the finals because then she could not defeat the American love and love. The remarks did not endear her to Molla, and the two did not speak when they passed each other. After her defeat in the finals Mallory shouted at her friend Bill Tilden, "Wait til I get her on grass!".

Lenglen is tested in the semis, where Kitty McKane holds set points. "Watched by Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians, the drama occured in the first set, when McKane recoverd from 0-3 to hold two set points on her service at 5-4 40-15. "In the second set Kitty played into Suzanne's hands by coming to the net too much."
Up to that point Lenglen had been so dominant that she dropped not a single game until the semis.

Missing is Suzanne's great rival Molla Mallory, who sailed for England to compete at Wimbledon the very day of the Lenglen-McKane match.

Ryan survived a match point in her third round match vs. the formidable Peacock of India. Peacock "reveled in the heat" but netted the ball time after time in the third, defeating herself.

A funny incident happened in round 2, when it was reported that "a new star" had come to challenge Lenglen. Even her name was perfect for tennis. Princess Lobkowiczova beat Satterwaithe (a top tenner) 6-0 6-0 with "a peculiar twisting serve". It was obvious the reporter had never seen the match the next day when a furious Satterwaithe stormed the tournament office to inform them that she had won 6-0 6-0, not the Princess! The official had given the referee the correct score but the wrong winner.

Semi-finals

Henri Cochet/Suzanne Lenglen d. Roger Danet/Diddie Vlasto 6-1, 6-1
John Gilbert (GBR)/Kathleen McKane d. Charles Aeschlimann (SUI)/Eleanor Goss (USA) 7-5, 4-6, 6-4
--

Final

Henri Cochet/Suzanne Lenglen d. John Gilbert (GBR)/Kathleen McKane (GBR) 6-2, 10-8
-----
Lenglen caused a stir by fainting. She won her singles first, though both she and Mckane performed below par, the English star often made errors off the backhand and Suzanne made a high number of errors herself. She collapsed after the singles, but went on to win the mixed. By the time she went on court for her last final (the ladies doubles) Lenglen "seemed resigned to defeat from the start."

As Beamish's last shot flew by her Suzanne declared "I simply can't do it." She later declared it was "a silly stunt" to attempt 3 finals in one day, and vowed never to repeat it.

Lenglen is in tears at the end of her final because the crowd was clapping for her Golding more than her after a disputed line-call. Golding actually had the spectators in shock because she had an unheard of 4-0 lead in set two! The diva was so distraught she asked her father if she should continue. He told her to play on.
Lenglen recovered to win and Papa suggested she might boycott
Paris in the future.

*Aeslimann=nee Bancroft.
*French site lists Pigueron as Andre.
*Note that the seeding comes directly from the Roland Garros site. The seeding is "off" in the sense that
it only reflects French based players. I find it very unlikely that Mckane would not be seeded.

As the ITF had banned the use of the title "World Hard Court", the French decided to repackage the event as the French Open. Lenglen spreadeagles the field with the loss of only 7 games in 5 matches.

Draw notes:

Bordes=Billout=Broquedis.

Nicole Desclercs married, on 19 April 1927, Gérard Jean Gustave Lannes de Montebello. The Montebello family is of noble stock and very prominent in France. The French site lists her as Mme G de Montebello.

The Roland Garros site has Yvonne des Landes de Danoet in the spot of Kleinadel. Kleinadel is correct, as I have the original draw published in Tennis et Golf from 1927. This leads me to think Mlle D'Anoet md and became Mme Kleinadel.

The draw from the official French site:
http://www.fft.fr/rolandgarros/pdfpa...mes1927_en.pdf

Summary:

The last French at St. Cloud. The absences of Lenglen(turned pro) and Helen Wills, Kitty Godfree, Liz Ryan and Molla Mallory (all in England tuning up on grass for Wimbledon) hurt the event's luster, though many of the world's first ten were entered.

Kea Bouman wins the first (and so far only) slam by a Dutch female.

Draw notes:

The NYT lists Anthony as "Helen". The RG site lists her as "Julie" Anthony from the US. This is Youtha Anthony, prominent Aussie of this era who was competing overseas throughout 1928.

The NYT refers to Charnelet as "Alice". The Roland Garros site lists her first name as "Germaine".

Though the Roland Garros site had Sylvia Henrotin the lady in question, Sylvia Jung Laufaurie Henrotin, was not wed to Mr Henrotin until 1930.

Mollie Wood (US) played the mixed with Sidney Wood. Was she a wife or sister?

Summary:

A crowd of 8,000 comes to see Helen win her semifinal, a record for a tennis crowd in France. This is the first year of a new stadium at Roland Garros-the site of the French Open to this very day.

Hundreds of fans stayed to watch a 3 hour-long struggle between Aussie Bickerton and American Anderson. Both were on the verge of collapse after the 43 game match.
