Question about points

I'm kinda new to the game of tennis, haven't been watching all that long (due to living in the UK and only recently getting sky tv ) so I don't totally understand the points system. Anyway onto my question. Defending points, whats that about??? Why and how do players do that???. I realise this question probably makes me look stupid, but if I don't ask i'll never learn.

Hi reverse_sides!

The points system as you know establishes the rankings of the players. It changes every week, as there is almost always a new tournament going on then. Defending points basically means that a player who played that event last year, needs to get to the same level (i.e. 4th round, semis, finals, winner, etc) to keep those points. If the player fails to reach the same level they did at the tournament last year, they lose points. If they get to a higher level they gain points.

Hope that clears it up. If not, just ask!

1. First round at Tier I through V tournaments is always worth 1 point;
round points for all later rounds can be found in the table above. For
example, a 32 draw $1,224,000 Tier I is worth 1 point for a first round loss,
38 for 2nd round (R16) and so on.
2. Players receiving a first round bye who then lose in the second round
receive only first round points.

Round Points - Qualifying

$170,000 (III) 1 2.25 3.75 7.25 (events with 3 rounds)
1 2.25 3.75 (events with 2 rounds)

$140,000 (IV) 1 2 3.5 5.5 (all events - 3 rounds)

$110,000 (V) 1 2 3 4.5 (all events - 3 rounds)

Futures/Challenger events:
$75,000 1 1.5 2 2.5
$50,000 1 1.5 2 2.5
$25,000 0.25 0.5 1.25 1.75
$10,000 0.75

1. Qualifiers advancing to the main draw retain all quality points
and "Qualifier" points in addition to main draw points. Lucky losers
retain only quality points earned in qualifying.
2. In Futures/Challenger events, no points are awarded for qualifying
prior to the Round of 32 ("play in any round prior to the Round of 32
will not be considered as having taken place for ranking purposes").
3. Qualifying round points are awarded for doubles qualifying in Tier
V and better events provided at least 4 teams are entered and the final
match in qualiyfing is best of 3 sets (instead of a pro set). If the
final round of qualifying is not played due to a main draw withdrawal,
the qualifier points are split between qualifying teams.
4. Quality points are not awarded in doubles qualifying.

Quality Points

Losing Grand
Player Slam
Rank Points Points
1 100 200
2 75 150
3 66 132
4 55 110
5 50 100
6-10 43 86
11-16 35 70
17-25 23 46
26-35 15 30
36-50 10 20
51-75 8 16
76-120 4 8
121-250 2 4
251-500 1 2
> 500 0 0

Quality points are the same for both singles and doubles; doubles quality
points are based on the team's combined rankings.

Because the rankings are on a rolling 52 week schedule, every week the points from 52 weeks previous are dropped from players totals, so they are referred to during the last week they are on the total as points being "defended". (Because you are trying to earn points to replace them)
