Re: Julia Glushko

Another solid win for Julia in R1 of the Vancouver 100K, where she has QF points to defend.
Much like the previous two weeks, the draw had opened up again with most of the seeds (including top seed Minella) going out, most importantly the ever unexpected Glatch losing to Dabrowski.

Glushko owns the Canadian, beating her easily on their last 3 encounters, and should do it once more in R2.
If she does, probably Keys again in the QF.

Re: Julia Glushko

Glushko beats Dabrowski as expected, 7-5 6-1.
A bit harder than expected first set, whose final game had about 10 deuces, and thus multiple wasted SP and points for 6-6.

Next up, also according to plan, is Keys, who beat Hardebeck with ease. As said, a 50-50 match.
Keys might be the most dangerous opponent left in the draw; top half is completely open and if Julia wins she has a great chance to go all the way

Re: Julia Glushko

The match against Keys won't be easy.. she would like to "revenge" on last week defeat (julia won 6-3 6-3 )
Hope Julia will come fresh andconcintrated although she played huge number of matches lately..
good luck (i think if she wins she'll gain new high ranking)

Re: Julia Glushko

Great win for Julia, coming back from a 1-6 first set to take the next 6-2, 6-3
The kind of wins she did in her "Australian summer" late 2010 to early 2011, when she cracked the top 200 for the first time.

SF opponent, another young American Pegula, is also tricky. She's 18, just outside the top 200, and did knock out the top seed Minella in R1.
A win surely means top 150.

Re: Julia Glushko

Getting to the final here would be HUGE for Julia and considering she's not playing Serena Williams the next round the chances to do just that aren't too bad.
What a great run - ranking would rise to at least 165 after this tourney.

Re: Julia Glushko

Lost the SF to Pegula 2-6 3-6
Don't know when will be the next time she'll find herself the highest ranked remaining in a 100K semi, but young Americans Pegula and Burdette that will play the final are clearly at least top-200 level - one put out the #1 seed Minella, the other the #2 seed Rogowska.

Bottom line another great week and breaking new ground.

USO qualies

(10)Aravane Rezai (FRA) v Saisai Zheng (CHN)
(wc)Brooke Austin (USA) v Ivana Lisjak (CRO)
Julia Glushko (ISR) v Marta Domachowska (POL)
Alison Riske (USA) v (28)Lauren Davis (USA)

Not a very good draw

She met Domachowska once last year and lost a 3-setter on clay. That's a winnable match, although it depends a bit more on the unstable, former top 50 Pole.

Lauren Davis is a top 100 level player who just doesn't play the schedule to get there, but let's get to her first...

Julia's match is second on court 5, so probably around 19:00 Israel time.
I read there are streams from qualies this year, though I'm not sure which courts do they cover.

Re: Julia Glushko

A very good 6-2 2-6 6-3 win for Julia over Domachowska in Q1
Of course this means she already defended most of her points from last year's qualies.

A very comprehensive opening set that lasted only 24 minutes, in which she only lost 4 points on serve.
I tuned it at 6-2 2-1, only to watch in disgust the Pole winning the next 7 games, including, I think, 14 points in a row from 2-1* (15-15) to *2-4 (0-40).
In the final set, Julia didn't convert a BP at 0-2, but from 1-3 down, she served a love game, saved a point for 2-4 and broke back, consolidated the break on her 4th game point (40-15, deuce, Ad, deuce, Ad), broke to 30 and to cap it all saved a BP on the final game, winning all of the final 5 games

As noted before, her record in big 3 set matches (well, relatively big, meaning Fed Cup, slam qualifiers or deep in 25K+ challengers) is pretty good. With this win it's 3-1 in slam qualies.
Interesting stat: not often you see a player winning 3 games more than her opponent yet with less total points - Marta won 75 points and Julia 74... She simply won most of the close games

The match to determine her Q2 rival, Davis-Riske, is just about to start.

Re: Julia Glushko

I think that Julia is an underdog in the match against Lauren Davis in the second round qualifier but would be a favorite in third round against the winner of Zheng/Davis.

Re: Julia Glushko

Julia never came to a slam qualifying after so many runs in a row so this is a huge opportunity to get into the MD.

Re: Julia Glushko

Great win for Julia from a set down, 2-6 6-4 6-3 over Lauren Davis
W/UE ratio was telling: 41/52 Julia, 12/30 Davis. Also 10 aces.

She trailed by a set and a break, broke twice for 4-2, broken back, saved BP at 4-4 and broke for the set.
Then saved a BP at the opening game of the 3rd, wasted 4 BP of her own in the next time but held her head up and cruised to 4-1 and the win (not before both players had further unconverted BPs).

Last year she faced Wozniak in her FQR, this time she might even be the favorite against Saisai Zheng, although the little-known Chinese beat Rezai in Q1 and should not be taken lightly.
But this is a golden chance to make a slam MD.

Imagine she makes it and gets Shahar in R1

Q3: Julia Glushko d. Saisai Zheng 6-3 6-3

First slam MD (or any WTA MD for that matter)

(copying a few of my notes from the GM thread)
The Chinese just couldn't hold serve - broken in 7 out of 9 service games (and faced BP in one of the other two as well).
Got 75% of her first serves in, but won just 40% of the points behind it...
Julia herself didn't exactly serve great today - only 1 ace (but also only 1 DF) as opposed to 10 vs Davis, broken 4 times and saved BP in a few others as well, including the last game.

Match summary:
Set 1: Julia broke to start it off, held, Zheng held for 2-1 - her only serving game where she didn't face BP - and broke back, the first of 4 successive breaks of serve. Julia held easily for 5-3 and broke again to close the set.
Set 2: This time the Chinese started with a break, and saved BP to hold. Julia served for 1-2, broke, and facing two BPs at 2-2 (*15-40) reeled off 10 straight points (breaking to love in the process) for *4-2 (30-0). She then lost the next 4 points to hand back the break, and after breaking back again led 30-0 and let Zheng get a BP at 30-40, but saved it and won GSM.

Most of the qualifier spots are not too intimidating, as long as she doesn't draw a seed (Ivanovic, Goerges, Wickmayer) or Makarova.
I wouldn't mind her drawing Shahar, and yes she will go as the favorite if it happens...
R2 would be huge for Julia, and it might serve as some sort of an ultimate wake-up call for Shahar to do an overhaul, although I don't really know what she's waiting for.

Well Shahar's wake up call should've been in the 2011 AO when she totally choked against Pennetta but nevermind.
What an incredible achievment for Glushko
