Julia Glushko (ISR) d. Gail Brodsky (USA) 62 46 63

Next she will play Melanie South (GBR) who is the 6th seed and ranked 200+

Interesting tennis math problem. What kind of results would it take for Julia to qualify to be in the Australian Open qualifiers? Would she not have to get to the top 150-175 ranking in order to place? How many Challengers $25,000 and up does she need to win or place highly to get to that objective? The current no 150 player has about 400 points while Julia has about 135 points. Winning a $25,000 Challenger gets you about 50 points.

Any thoughts?

Re: Julia Glushko

The AO quali cut-off last year was rank #218 (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=395326),
current player #218 has 130 points more than her,
so the odds are a bit better than what you described but still she will have to do really well in those tournies to even get close to the cut-off.

I think usually AO cut offs are a bit lower than other slams, I think in 2008 it was even at 300+.

Re: Julia Glushko

Great wins (the last scoreline!), this is already her best tournament to date. South was top 100 last year.
She'll play either Begu or Jessica Moore (seeded 4 and 5) in the semis.

Re: Julia Glushko

I just checked - this is actually her 3rd semi final in a 25k this year
but maybe it's true that this tournament had tougher opponents, I don't know.

by the way, she will play Moore in the semis.
Hopefully she will reach the final of a 25k for the first time this week

Re: Julia Glushko

The one in Uzbekistan where she was seeded was markedly softer.
The run in Sweden (after a 3rd set TB win over a qualifier in the opening round) was nice and close to the current one, until she was run over by Arvidsson who expectedly took the title with no trouble at all, only losing 3-6 games each time.
But there's no Arvidsson calibre player here, and there are a big chance and big points on offer this weekend. Time for the next step - her first 25K crown.

she will play unseeded Isabella Holland (AUS) in the Final.
Good luck to her

Re: Julia Glushko

Big win from a set down against a more experienced opponent (who has 3 MD slam [matches] wins to her credit).
Also a relatively comfortable draw for the final.
Like her, Holland also took out 3 seed, two of them in deciding TBs, and looking at her results this year, she was injured for a few months early on, has had a pretty bad year and this tournament stands out more for her than for Glushko.

For maybe the first time in the tournament, Julia is the favorite tomorrow, hopefully it won't change her luck. She definitely needs the points.

Re: Julia Glushko

Julia won her first 25k title

Glushko def. Holland 6-1 6-2

Next week she will add 50 points but lose 8. In total she will get to around #285

Re: Julia Glushko

Brilliant run The final blowout reminds me that her first 10K final was a double-bagel win, so there's a pattern here

She's listed in 25K Esperance (also Australia) for tomorrow, but it's harder, with Molik as the top seed, as e.g. Moore who was seeded #5 in Kalgoorlie unseedes in this one (#11), and Julia is listed into qualifying, but they're already under way, with the quali seeds given a bye...
Maybe she'll get a MD Wild Card
Edit: I now see she did. Hopefully a good draw (which means avoiding the top 2 seeds early).

Julia to an Israeli news site:

Quote:
I had a tough draw and I beat good players.
In the semifinal my opponent had 4 match points, there was a lot of pressure and I handled it well.
I think it's due to the hard work I did with my team, and the change I went through.
I hope to continue like this in the coming weeks.
she saved 4 mps in the semifinal

Re: Julia Glushko

She lost 2-6 2-6 to South in Esperance R1, almost as one-sided as her win in their last week match.
Next week another 25K, in Wellington (NZ), where the level of field seems closer to the Kalgoorlie one, other than the top seed being top-50 Groth(!)

Re: Julia Glushko

Julia lost again in the 1st round of the 25k in Wellington, NZ.

I hope she collects herself and gets better results in the last 2 tournaments of the series.
I don't think a 280 rank is going to be enough to qualify for the Australian Open..

No consistency. Going from winning a $25K tourney to losing 2 first rounds in a row.
